I grew up with a violent alcoholic. So, I can think of a whole list of reasons. Since growing up in the 1980s I have always preferred people smoke than drink. People don't smoke weed then go beat the crap out of each other or cause a ton of drama for other people. Well, then that answers that. I'm partial to both.

If my husband asks, there has been a shortage of pickles since this whole thing started. He's supposed to be tapering off a low fiber, low residue diet since it's been 8+ weeks since surgery. The man loves pickles, moreso post-surgery when his body must crave sodium to prompt re-hydration. Seriously, it's like clockwork after each one. He will sit and eat a full jar per day complete with drinking the juice too. Given the massive amount of internal scar tissue he has at this point, I'm not taking any chances and have used COVID-19 as my cover to not bring home pickles.
...
Just in case you feel bad for him - he's substituted ramen noodles to get his salt fix. I don't mind except that he has DD7 eating them too and she's the kind of kid that will become picky if we let her.

I love the taste of French press coffee. I have a really nice double filter one at work, which really cuts down on the sediment at the bottom of the cup. The downside to French presses is cleanup. my French press is packed somewhere, but I do have a pour-over setup that was still in the original box. I should probably check that out. there's a huge 12c pot here in the house, but I'm getting sick of hand-washing the damn thing every day. my little 5c machine would brew straight into my mug in recent weeks.

We French press at home. We have a glass press, a stainless steel press, and a plastic one for cold brew. I've been making cold brew because that equals three days of coffee for me.

Back in early March when the mess started, there was no coffee on the shelves locally. I purchase pods online and keep a good back stock so I was okay. Local liquor stores are booming and have added TP and paper towels to their shelves along with lemons, limes, etc. The higher-end local restaurants started offering their wines by the bottle with take-out food for 30% off list price which was amazing.

I wonder how many people who were grabbing a Starbucks on the way to work are now simply drinking soda while hanging out at home to work. I know a lot of people who don't make coffee at home at all, but pick one up every day into work. I doubt those folks bought a coffee maker...they're either picking one up each day, or drinking other caffeinated drinks. My wife says it is quite difficult sometimes to get soda during grocery pickup where it was never an issue before.
I'm assuming booze is down because most people who don't sneak booze into work probably aren't getting drunk working from home either. Drinking is a social thing for "most" people I would say. I'm guessing consumption for the average drinker might be down since there's no more social aspect to most of it.

I don’t drink coffee , I drink Diet Coke . My DH does though , so he hasn’t been getting his Starbucks fix . I do order him Cafe du Monde pods from Amazon. He really likes those . I’ve had to order more than usual with him being home much more now.
Ive also started including alcohol here and there with my Instacart orders . 🍹🍺

I get my pods online from Intelligent Blends. They have a gizmo that removes the top of the pod (sold separately, but not too $). Then you can compost the filter and grounds and recycle the plastic.
Cold brew is another thing I like, but wow it uses a lot of grounds.

We use a can of coffee a month. I quit drinking coffee so it will be less now.
We did buy one extra can on last shopping trip.
I have been drinking gallons of iced tea. I do stop at noon.
I don't drink alcohol. I don't keep track of what kind of beer and hard liquor H. uses.

I'm guessing consumption for the average drinker might be down since there's no more social aspect to most of it. I've had a Keurig for several years. It gets used when we have overnight guests, dinner guests and when I need a cup of coffee for this one cake recipe. I had to buy more pods since this all started. If I'm going to work, I stop at Dunkin. I've got a 45 minute commute minimum. I also have to pass through a metal detector and have my belongings xrayed to get into work. I'm not trying to have an insulated Yeti style cup set off the metal detector or spill in the xray machine. The plastic Dunkin cup I can carry with me through the metal detector. I'm also up at 530 and out the door by 6. I struggle to get lunches packed and myself dressed. I'm not trying to add another dang thing to do. The only place I've had a problem with soda, is trying to get Sprite at Target. It's been out of stock on multiple occasions. It's not a super Target though.

Cold brew is another thing I like, but wow it uses a lot of grounds. Yeah it does! I make mine with 11 scoops of beans, so however much grounds that makes. We buy coffee beans every week now. Husband will press hot coffee every other day (he'll drink second day coffee cold), I make cold brew once or twice a week, and will supplement with earl gray tea. In normal times, I'm only in the office three days a week and stop at a coffee shop on my walk to work from the train station. On weekend we'd go to our local coffee shop. I miss it and everyone who works there.

Coffee does not come in a can. That's something different you are drinking that is related to good coffee but tastes horrible. lol That "sediment" in the bottom of the cup is meant for the top of one's ice cream.

So your meaning is that Turkish coffee is meaningless based on the usage of the aftermath as an ice cream topping. Also how coffee does not come in a can. I wonder how the other world enjoys their coffee.

I buy mine in bags most of the time but I buy cans of Folger's for the church- at least I did back when Coffee Hour wasn't hazardous to your health. Sadly, we won't be starting that up again even after the church opens.

As for booze, in my state liquor sales are up. But not as much as what is down from bars and restaurants being closed.

I really feel like I"m missing out on Coffee, but my wife always tells me to not even start drinking it. Maybe she knows my personality and thinks I'll just be drinking it all the time. I am a beverage fiend and have always drank a lot of fluids. For a long time it was water most of the day, diet pop as well. Then I figured I was drinking too much diet pop when I had it in the house, so I only drank it at restaurants but then I would just drink it like crazy. Then I gave it up completely and switched to sparkling water. At first, I hated the taste and then got used to it, then that became my go-to drink. I didn't drink diet pop for probably close to 2 years, but the moment I have one, it's like I never stopped. I thought I'd be a little repulsed by it or think that it was just too much, but it tasted as great as the last one I had! I have been drinking coffee for 50 plus years. It is something I look forward to first thing in the morning. I am almost seventy now and I know I cannot have any caffeinated coffee past noon or so as it will affect my sleeping at night. So if you do decide to take up caffeinated coffee, test yourself to see how it affects your evening/nighttime sleep. ETA: I also drink my coffee black. Leaned to drink it black years ago so I didn't have to worry about me or others not having sugar, milk, cream, flavored creams, etc. Pefectly fine drinking it black.

Judging from the drive up lines at the Starbucks that I pass they are still getting their Starbucks coffee. The other day cars were actually out in the street waiting in line - and this was at one on a busy corner and two ways in - both streets had cars backed up on them. I'm thinking folks all you have to do is go 1/4 in either direction and there is another Starbucks with less traffic and won't risk getting hit. There are at least 12 or 13 here plus one in Super TArget. Maybe folks are running out for their SB fix and then headed back home to work?
But having said that I am not a coffee drinker so I can't relate. I might be in line if I was a SB coffee drinker.

I know that in-store isn't an option these days but can't bring myself to use drive-through even though I've got $105 in my Starbucks account from e-Rewards and the blood bank. That will go quickly if/when the stores open up and DS, DDIL and I agree it's safe for the granddaughters to have cake pops and juice.

I get a once a week Friday treat from Dunkin. I try to go early when the line is not so long. I never did their drive through before this. I hate waiting in such a long line. I've always done a mobile order and walked in and picked up. When our stay at home was suggested, I still went in. I felt fine. Employees were all way back behind counters and maybe 1 or 2 people waiting to order. Plenty of room to avoid them.
I'm not sure if it was a chain wide decision but around here Target has closed their Starbucks. Ours has finally expanded hours but for several weeks it was Monday through Friday 6-3. They moved it a couple years ago to the dumbest spot with a tiny parking lot. I refuse to wait out on a busy main thoroughfare of the city to get Starbucks. At least at Dunkin I'm in a shopping center parking lot. If I want Starbucks I'll go to the grocery store location when my niece is working.

Last week I checked out the Starbucks in the local HyVee grocery store. It was open, but no cake pops. I was going to send a couple to my granddaughters, with their parents' agreement. There was a line so I didn't want to wait around just to ask if they were planning to re-stock; will look again next time I shop for groceries. Yeah, I know it will cost more to mail them than it did to buy them. I'm Grandma. I don't have to be sensible 100% of the time.

I prefer "unadulterated" coffee,as well. I gave up the sugar and milk/whatever decades ago - because I didn't have access to consistent sugar/milk and some of the varieties taste worse than the coffee already tastes. If you drink it black - you pretty much are just at the mercy of the coffee flavor. I realized that I, too, have been drinking coffee for 50 years - I'm 56yo. I was in charge of watching the metal coffee pot on the stove - the perculator, "perk" for the allotted time every morning. I did this before I started kindergarten. I eventually "graduated" to making the coffee every morning. And since everyone else was having coffee before leaving in the morning - I wanted some too. It's tough being the youngest with much older siblings. That was back in the day when my mom and dad reheated the leftover coffee and had a cup after dinner. I have to be really desperate to drink re-heated coffee after it's been sitting all day. I do sometimes make coffee ice cubes with any left over coffee - I will sometimes drink an ice coffee. Anyway, I recommend black if you plan on having a coffee habit - not being able to have the right kind of "add ins" when you really need a cup - adds alot of drama to one's live (above and beyond the drama a caffeine addiction can add...)

I used to wonder how my grandparents could drink coffee at night. Then I got older and I now understand it was so they could stay awake and deal with the noise of kids running around. Ironically, while I love very dark black coffee, the smell of it would make me vomit when I was prego with both my sons. DH had to buy his coffee or make it at work because I couldn't tolerate the smell at all.

He told me once he would sip it because he didn’t want to hurt his grand pap’s feelings
