I would think that the coffee drinkers who can no longer hit their favorite coffee shop (or drive thru starbucks) - started making coffee at home (I'm wondering if some of the personal accounts of having "mild" Covid19 during late march and april - was actually caffeine withdrawl). Wouldn't that mean they needed to buy coffee grounds/beans? Shouldn't there have been a run on coffee at the stores?
Same goes for booze. I know binny's is an essential business - but again, shouldn't there have been a run on booze as people stocked up?
how come there seems to be plenty of coffee and booze? Is it because people keep pounds of coffee at home (::blush:: I do) and cases of booze at home (I do not)??
FWIW: I have a major caffeine addiction. I keep a spare brand new coffee maker on hand for when the current one fails. I had 8 pounds of coffee in the freezer at the end of February. I had a couple jugs o' Folgers (I sometimes cut the fancy expensive coffee with less expensive coffee). I need to do inventory - in case I need to buy more (probably not... I think I was good to August with what I had in February). Caffeine withdrawal is ugly.
Am I not seeing the shortage of coffee and booze because I haven't had to buy any? Or was coffee and booze production unaffected by the pandemic?
ADDED: what other stuff should we be having shortages of but aren't?

You can still go in to most places here - coffee shops, restaurants, whatever - you just can't stay there. Take out only. And many other places have gone online with either curbside, pickup, or delivery. No reason for people to have to go without Starbucks or booze, therefore no shortage.

Starbucks and Scooters are open here but it's take out only. I saw a line around the block at the one Starbucks last weekend. Our grocery stores sell booze, we have a couple of liquour stores and then resturants in the area have been allowed to sell take out drinks in order to be able to unload their stock before they can no longer sell it. So there is plenty to go around, there is not much need to panic buy either. It may be next though. We've had TP, canned goods, hair dye, now meat. Who knows what the next hysteria will be?

I drink very little alcoholic beverages (I average a glass of wine/week) but before the shutdown here I went to Costco. There were no disinfectant wipes to be had at the time but I loaded up on what I really came for: coffee! I have been SIP/WFH for almost 8 weeks now and I have enough coffee left for at least another 4 months

Although this thread has not been up for long, a musical interlude may still be appropriate.

Coffee was the first thing I stocked up on. I can live without food, but I would prefer to not have to live without my morning French press of coffee. There's been talk for a while of coffee shortages or higher prices due to production. I figured the international supply chain would be ripe for problems so it would be a reasonable thing to stock up on. I also can't get the coffee I like here for a reasonable price and it's cheaper on Amazon. I don't drink, but I have heard Colorado has been having some weed shortages. Any time of the day you will find cars from Idaho here buying weed. Idaho is 3 hours from here! Crazy. Last week I stocked up on tuna and canned salmon. With meat shortages and limits, I can see people stocking up on alternative protein sources. I noticed my local store had a massive display of beef jerky the other day right next to the mostly empty meat case. Great marketing idea.

I really feel like I"m missing out on Coffee, but my wife always tells me to not even start drinking it. Maybe she knows my personality and thinks I'll just be drinking it all the time. I am a beverage fiend and have always drank a lot of fluids. For a long time it was water most of the day, diet pop as well. Then I figured I was drinking too much diet pop when I had it in the house, so I only drank it at restaurants but then I would just drink it like crazy. Then I gave it up completely and switched to sparkling water. At first, I hated the taste and then got used to it, then that became my go-to drink.
I didn't drink diet pop for probably close to 2 years, but the moment I have one, it's like I never stopped. I thought I'd be a little repulsed by it or think that it was just too much, but it tasted as great as the last one I had!

If you go with a french press instead of a coffee maker, you can keep bad coffee machines out of the landfill, and the coffee tastes so much better. I keep a back-up press carafe on hand and the glass is recyclable in case I break the carafe. All you need is a teakettle to heat water and the press pot. Takes up less space in the kitchen too.

I'm guessing there will never be a shortage of coffee or booze. They don't want rioting in the streets.

We've certainly been buying more coffee beans and tea for home, and absolutely are keeping our booze options stocked.
I assume no shortages because there's only so many TP manufacturers and meat processing plants, but an abundance of local roasters, breweries, wineries, and distilleries in addition to the big guys? I have yet to purchase artisan toilet paper, but I sure as hell am supporting my local breweries and distilleries!

My brother in law said alcohol prices are slowly creeping up. We bought a couple things before the shut down started here and haven't needed to restock.
The local grocery store has been running sales on K cups and some varieties have been out of stock for weeks. Target had a sale and I was checking the app and everything I would have bought is out of stock.

I love the taste of French press coffee. I have a really nice double filter one at work, which really cuts down on the sediment at the bottom of the cup.
The downside to French presses is cleanup.

I thought about this some more and part of the reason, which CookesGalore mentioned already, might be that there are so many producers. In the case of alcohol, there's a lot more variety, too. Can't get vodka? Gin will do. Can't get Merlot? Get Shiraz. They may not have the packaging issues, either- other than draft beer, aren't the bottles sold in liquor stores the same sizes as the restaurants buy? All they need to do is change where they send them.
As for coffee, maybe people are still lining up at the Drive-Through at Starbucks and supporting their local shops. One near me sells doughnuts and last week they had a "sold out" sign just before their official closing at noon. They have a limit on how many people can be in the store but the outdoor tables are always occupied.
And, despite the fully-entrenched habits of some of us here, alcohol and coffee aren't quite the universal needs that TP is. Plenty of people live without them.

No, why would stainless steel give off a metal flavor? Also, it keeps the coffee hotter than glass.

I started this shelter in place 8 weeks ago with 7 fifths of Bourbon. I only have one left, time for a trip to the liquor store, and hopefully they have some good stuff left.
Coffee has been easy to find, but throwing a couple extra pounds in the freezer isn’t a bad idea.
I don’t know what the next crisis item will be, probably something stupid like tooth picks or mustard. Whatever it is, it’s going to suddenly be a “must have”.

Seriously, I have so much beer at my house I could have a block party and supply the booze. I also have a fully stocked bar. Every time we have a party my family brings more beer, and Red Wine. It is very thoughtful of them to bring me Wine, but I drink white wine, and everyone always seems to bring Red wine.
I concur on the liquor, what they serve in the bar, is only different in the tax stamp seal right?
Coffee-Starbucks will sell you beans, if you want it ground, they will grind it for you.
we have a keurig and a fancy coffee pot that will grind the beans and brew the coffee, and we have a drip coffeemaker in the basement. DD has a french press- if it is not already at my house, it will be on Saturday when she moves home 100%.
I did buy coffee beans when I laid in supplies for the Pandemic, but it may be time to resupply. DH drinks coffee, but I do not. I drink black tea and Diet Pepsi. I have a whole bag of loose tea from Teavanna's going out of business sale I should use up though.

It is something I look forward to first thing in the morning. I am almost seventy now and I know I cannot have any caffeinated coffee past noon or so as it will affect my sleeping at night. So if you do decide to take up caffeinated coffee, test yourself to see how it affects your evening/nighttime sleep.

I can't get into coffee, but the one good thing about it is it's usually offered for free or cheap at a lot of places, so I do still drink it occasionally. Our work has pots of it all over the place and they apparently buy the "good stuff" although I can't tell the difference. I usually put so much flavored creamer in it that it's hardly coffee anymore.

No shortage of booze because the restaurant industry shut down, their biggest customer. They need to unload their surplus so it goes to grocery and liquor stores. I was sitting with a liquor sales rep on 3/16 when the first round of no more than 50 people at a bar/restauraunt. She sold to both restaurants and liquor stores and said she would have to shift her focus. Then 3/17 they shut down restaraunts

I stocked up on coffee when this started. Our normal one French press pot/day has turned into 2-3 pots because TD is not hitting Starbucks on his way to/from work. A French press uses a lot more coffee.
For booze, we have way more wine and scotch than we need. TD has absolutely no control in duty free stores, and we’ve been through a lot of duty free stores in the last couple years. We vowed no more wine purchases when we went to South America.....but because we hit several vineyards, we had wine on the cruise and still brought 7 bottles home with us.

Since growing up in the 1980s I have always preferred people smoke than drink. People don't smoke weed then go beat the crap out of each other or cause a ton of drama for other people.

My husband works in booze sales in a big drinking state. The shut-down of restaurants and sporting events has hit them hard but most revenue has been made up in retail sales to liquor and grocery stores. The problem is that people are not buying high-end, high-profit products but lots of low-end, low-profit drinks. They ultimately had to furlough the salespeople who sold exclusively to restaurants. Those reps with a mix or who do stores exclusively are actually doing pretty well all things considered.
