Since I have 2 vegetarians in the household, meat meals are pretty rare. It's easier to plan a vegetarian meal and then add a separate side of meat if I really want it. I am usually too lazy to cook meat just for myself, though. So meat is something I typically get when I eat out. May I recommend the cookbook Meat on the Side by Nikki Dinki? It's great just for this purpose!

Just got back from Costco. We bought a large package of chicken thighs, pork tenderloin and a package of sirloin burgers. No prime rib and no leg of lamb available for TD’s birthday dinner, so Plan C is going to be scallops. So what about the face masks at Costco? Are they enforcing that?
ETA: scallops sound yummy
Yes, masks were being enforced. I was pushing for the prime rib as i can remake the leftovers (just like I can grilled lamb). Scallops are a one shot meal, no leftovers so I’ve gotta go back to the drawing board for subsequent meals. Scallops are not a bad Plan C though.

Was at our local Costco this morning. Was picking up some meat when an employee took down the sign limiting meat purchases to three packages. The meat cases weren’t full, but it appears that Costco now believes that they have an adequate supply of meat products,

I bought a gross of white towels when this started. Cut up about half, because I was cleaning a lot with no paper towels. I’m thinking some form of diaper pail solution? Use and soak? Sigh. 2020 is weird. Costco had both TP and towels. That’s locally though, but I have seen TP in the grocery store the last few times I have gone. I do tend to roll out of bed and hit the stores though......

We’ve been doing grocery pick up. They don’t even list it. I called last week to ask if it’s just a delivery thing? And she said no it pretty much just comes in and is immediately out again.
I might call around if I don’t get my delivery by tomorrow.

Like I said, today and for the last month or so, there has been TP on the shelf then. Doesn’t seem to matter which day of the week, other than I have never gone to the store on the weekend.

Publix had up limiting signs in the sausage/bacon area. I didn't notice them anywhere else.
But I bought a roast. Even at 3.5 pounds, it was too big for a single person. Before, though, I would buy it, cook it, eat multiple meals, and toss what I didn't eat.
Today I asked the guy in the butcher dept. if he could halve it, and he did. I bought both halves and will rewrap the one that I'm not cooking tomorrow and freeze it.

I often shred what’s left and freeze it cooked, spread on a cookie sheet first so it isn’t a solid mass. Easy add to soup, stir fry, tortilla...

I'm on a toilet paper count down now... the off brand I finally broke down and ordered says May 7 - 12 for delivery... we are down to the last roll in each bathroom. We will see who wins. I could mail you a roll or two. For a price...😈

First thing in the morning is the best time to find toilet paper. It goes quickly.

All our stores have been pretty well stocked with TP for quite a while now. They don't always have every brand available, but if you're not picky, it's not a problem.

TP has been plentiful for the last few weeks along with all the other paper goods and Dawn dish soap. Chicken and eggs are still the ones that aren't in stock much at the grocery stores, people are still panic buying those as fast as they arrive. I saw ground beef at the grocery store but not some of the other cuts. I suspect there will be meat but not as many choices as people are used to expecting. Pork is spotty but it was that way before all this. Tons of turkey so I guess just like certain brands of TP and canned vegetables and flavors of soup not being cleaned out there is apparently a line that even in an apocalypse people will not cross. I use a local butcher. They own the farm and do their own processing. They'll probably do fine the issue for me is they were packed and too small to observe six feet distance. I am cool with being meatless should I run out before the panic buying stops.

A smaller grocery store from a family-owned chain near me did something different yesterday. From 4 to 7 PM they were offering grilled 10-oz. hand-cut Kansas City strip steaks with a twice-baked potato for $7.99. I was out on my walk past there as they were firing up and cleaning the grill and I have to admit that the smells made me hungry! Wonder how many they sold. They're probably at a disadvantage to the bigger stores because they have a smaller selection so most of us go elsewhere. I hope this helped business. I would have bought a few. My boys would be loving that.

I’ve been using Instacart and every few orders I will put it in my cart and see if they will still having any by the time my order gets shopped . I’ve been lucky a couple times so far good luck

Beef & noodles, bbq, just plain sandwiches....lots of uses for them. ETA....we have a veggie farm near us that is gathering veggies from their farm & several others & selling boxes of them for $20. Like one box I saw had 3 head of broccoli, a bunch of onions, 4 bell peppers of various colors, 6 sweet potatoes, cucumbers, a bunch of greens that I couldn't tell exactly what they were & a couple other things on the bottom I couldn't ID from the picture either. They are doing this to try to keep these farms from going under until things change. They have sold 1700 boxes so far this week.

Costco has a limit of 3 on beef, chicken and pork.
But they had no chicken or pork, so grabbed 1 package of ground beef and 1 salmon.

Eggs I haven't had a problem getting. I struck out on chicken at the warehouse clubs last Friday. The lady working at Sam's said go when they open. I went to a local grocery store yesterday to get a gift card around lunchtime. They had plenty of chicken. Limit 2 I think.
Paper towels are coming back in stock. Toilet paper flies off the shelf as soon as it's stocked.

My weekly shopping has been ok. We've even had hand sanitizer stocked and liquid pump soap. My preferred brand of TP is out but last week we were up to 4+ brands and I shopped on Sunday afternoon. Chicken was almost completely wiped out though. They were restocking eggs while I was there. Dh's preferred brand of boxed salad was gone though. But there were other brands available. Including a new to me, local one.

I received a large order of beef and chicken from a local farm yesterday. Much pricier than the store, but I was able to order our preferred cuts and it was already packaged and frozen for me (although I much prefer fresh meat to frozen). I might do another round just to be sure and then call it. It’s very easy to go from stocking up to hoarding and I don’t want to overbuy and waste meat and money. I’d like to get more bacon, sausages, and ham, but those are getting tougher to find. I’ll have to use my current stock sparingly. 😉 I find it encouraging that businesses such as this are flourishing. As most people have learned by now, the conditions under which animals are raised, slaughtered and processed for meat are pretty awful the majority of the time, both for the animals and the workers. Not everyone can buy in bulk from farmers- it's way more $$ up front and you need the freezer capacity- but it's more sustainable. I just hope people continue this after the supply of cheap meat comes back. Early on as the COVID-19 cases were increasing, I listened to a podcast interview with one of these farmers. Business was booming but, as he pointed out, he can't slaughter more livestock than he has, and he has to plan ahead when making decisions about how many animals he needs to raise to meet next year's demands.

I do this as well, but the reason I buy a roast is that I really like roast with potatoes and carrots, etc. It's not just the meat, but a particular dish. Now I can take my one large roast and have this dish again. Remember that you guys have families. There is one of me. When I cook, I end up with a lot leftover, not just some.

If I threw out food, my grandmother would come back to haunt me. My mother threw out very little (with 5 kids there usually wasn't much left over) but when she did, she'd say wistfully, "Your grandmother would have made a meal out of that".
Fortunately, repetitive menus don't bother me and I can freeze little bits of just about anything (other than potatoes and other foods that don't freeze well) and find ways to incorporate them into something else.

Plenty of chicken and eggs here, but ground beef and sausage are getting hard to find.
TP is still mostly out of stock. Our largest stores in this area are Walmart, Target, & Giant. Walmart has it hidden in the back. You are allowed 1 pack, and it is off brand stuff. Giant has had zero TP since the end of March. Target has Charmin & Northern, but you have to get there early. Paper towels, 1-2 brands found at most stores and low quantities.
No sanitizing wipes or hand sanitizer anywhere. Bleach was also gone for a while, but it is starting to restock.

Daughter’s boyfriend’s parents have decided to allow their kids to see 1-2 people with our change to yellow. We have decided as a family that since daughter is the most in need of people that this will be our allowed contact expansion.
While chronicling our current protocols I said I hadn’t been in any store but might have to break down if tp doesn’t arrive... she just happened to have gotten a double order and will drop him and tp off today... not sure who is most excited about what 😜
Anyway family towel averted!

May I recommend the cookbook Meat on the Side by Nikki Dinki? It's great just for this purpose! Why must you enable me? I need another cookbook like I need a hole in the head. I'd also recommend Thug Kitchen for anyone looking to start eating less meat. Opened up a whole new world for me and blew my assumptions that a meatless diet meant endless carbs and soy. I'll need to check that out! I want to eat less meat as well but I'm not a huge fan of pasta and my favourite way to eat tofu is fried... so that's not exactly healthy!

I like the Minimalist Baker website too - they have a ton of vegan and vegetarian dishes. BTW, you should search for how to pan fry tofu in the cooking section. cookiesgalore had that added there a long time ago.

I was at the Walmart Neighborhood Market yesterday. Bought a good size rump roast for $16 and cut it in half when I got home. Like SS, it's WAY to big for me even when cut in half. I would everything I was looking for except the hand sanitizer. I certainly don't know when they restock that stuff, but I only managed to grab it 1 time.
I use paper towels maybe 1 per week, never did think they were a good financial idea. As for TP, I have enough stored now to last me perhaps years. My shelves in the garage are getting more items on them, so I must be doing something right. Hoarding however, is not my plan.
I also have a plentiful amount of ground beef, chicken breasts and some frozen dinners, so I'm not concerned with that either.
