I'm definitely eating less meat since I started the Imperfect Foods. It's there, in the freezer. I just forget to take it out to thaw. I'm not super worried about freezer burn at this point because most of it has been in there only a couple weeks. But there's definitely more veggies going into and out of my fridge, even when I don't order much. I've also found that I'm not a fan of plain soup. It has to have chunks of veggies in it as well. Plus, putting veggies in soup is a great way to use up the wilty stuff. Like, yesterday, I just chopped up the remaining celery into my new favorite: Wolfgang Puck Tomato Basil Bisque. Imperfect foods has been great for me since this all started. I love that they also have non-produce items. They have made it possible for me to essentially avoid the grocery store (along with my food kit service). I have been making so much veggie soup since this all started. Mostly to go along with the sourdough bread I've also been making.

My Aldi this morning had tons of pork and chicken, but not too much beef. Round steak, ground beef, and a couple of pieces of fajita meat. I grabbed pork chops and chicken breasts. I (for absolutely no good reason) feel like there will be meat at the store. It may not be the meat you want, and it may cost way more than it does normally, but I'm hoping if you are flexible in both meal plans and budget, you won't be meatless. Easy for me to say. I can handle paying more for groceries. Yes, same here. I enjoy the challenge of working with whatever I find. Beef has always been more of DH's go-to because it's quick and easy-grill it and you are done. I'm the chicken or goat curry, simmer lamb shanks all day, toss cubed tofu into the stir-fry, big pot of bean soup with 1 cup of ham to 1 lb. of beans, half of things here. I'm going to be Googling a lot of stuff to learn how to use the proteins from our Asian markets like dried fish.

Since I have 2 vegetarians in the household, meat meals are pretty rare. It's easier to plan a vegetarian meal and then add a separate side of meat if I really want it. I am usually too lazy to cook meat just for myself, though. So meat is something I typically get when I eat out.

Well, I see that the local chain I use (HyVee) is now limiting meat purchases. Limit is 4 packages of any combination of fresh beef, ground beef, pork and chicken.
Doesn't affect me much but I worry that per-customer limits will generate more repeat visits or multiple people, e.g. couples, coming into the store and going through the checkout with separate orders. If you have a household with 2 adults and 3 teenagers and you're heavy meat-eaters and don't want to change, that's what you do.
I also hope that this doesn't end up with waste of meat substitutes. Already I've read of scarcities of dried beans and rice- haven't even looked in my local stores because I have enough for now. I can picture people buying the max of meat and then buying dried beans "just in case" and never using them.

Have you checked out Thrive Market? It requires an annual membership, but they have a 30 day free trial and they stay pretty stocked with rice and beans etc. organics and non gmo. A few weeks ago they were 10-12 days delay in shipping but right now they say they are 48 hours. I had used them years ago when I still lived far away from stores, but signed up again when this first started because I wanted to have multiple supply lines open if necessary.

Thanks, but I should be OK. It's a lot easier maintaining provisions for a household of one. I have a lot of quinoa, and supplies of barley, wheatberries, couscous and some dried beans. I'll be looking for more dried beans when I go to the grocery store but it's not urgent.

I'm on a toilet paper count down now... the off brand I finally broke down and ordered says May 7 - 12 for delivery... we are down to the last roll in each bathroom. We will see who wins.

TD’s birthday is next week, and since we won’t be going out, I asked what he wants for his birthday dinner. Prime rib or grilled lamb. We just did grilled lamb a few weeks ago so hope I can find a prime rib at Costco. His concern was that he didn’t want me to spend all day in the kitchen. Little does he know is prime rib meal is a very easy meal to make, far easier than his favorite chili. I think I’ll keep the secret,
Prime rib also leaves good leftovers.....

My Asian grocery didn't have much of the high-end stuff like $24.99/lb steaks but plenty of everything else. We got some thinner rib eyes for $9.99/lb for Sunday. Somehow while we were there, pork steam buns, pork & shrimp frozen dumplings, seaweed salad and mackerel sashimi jumped in my cart.
I've got to learn to cook with duck b/c they always have a ton of fresh and frozen duck parts and whole ducks.

I just got the call today that my two pigs are ready to pick up (ordered them from a farmer 3 weeks ago when i saw how this meat thing was going) 6 guys in the house, 4 of them in their 20's. I figure about a pig a month. Bottomless pits I tell you.

I love duck, but unless I place a special order with the town butcher, I can’t get it. At this point, I’m glad I can get lamb regularly and it appears not to be a hot seller. I don’t know if they have a frozen food section though.....hmmmm.

I know the fresh duck is locally sourced, and I suspect some is REALLY LOCAL because in my work with our HOA we often have reports of poultry being raised in quantities beyond individual need. 65 ducks and geese aren't for the homeowner's Sunday dinner. But right now, no one seems to mind so I suspect folks aren't reporting as long as they share the bounty.

I put a deposit on August Chickens and a fall Lamb at the local place. mmmmmhhhh. We use to raise 400 chickens a year on the farm, about 5-6 pounds. After we quit, I realized we raised them bigger than the store. Our wing drumlets were the size of the drumbsticks on the store chickens. Also, have learned to love lamb.... such a rich taste.

It's interesting to see how the small family farmers are weathering this much better than the large corporate ones. That's a nice change of pace for sure. It's a lot easier to unload 30 or 40 head from a small operation via Facebook or website than it is 1000 when you're used to just hauling them to the bulk buyers.

That's something I was thinking, too. The smaller places already have their clientele, with no middleman. ConAgra, not so much the same "luxury".

People who don't normally buy from small farmers are also looking to them now. They are finding shortages in stores and looking for alternative suppliers. They certainly have more options than the huge operations.

We are thinking about buying part of a cow. Haven't decided yet, as freezer space is the biggest problem. We live close to ranches, so there are options, but they are pricey. Not a huge fan of beef and as long as the grocery stores have something, we could make it work.
Everything else we have been pretty quick about, but this one is just hanging out there for us and we can't decide what to do.

She had a big freezer. Most years, they also raised and slaughtered a pig. Half a cow and a whole pig - that was kinda it for the year. She would add in chicken and fish, but she didn't have to buy much of the other stuff. I was always jealous, but not enough to follow suit.

A smaller grocery store from a family-owned chain near me did something different yesterday. From 4 to 7 PM they were offering grilled 10-oz. hand-cut Kansas City strip steaks with a twice-baked potato for $7.99. I was out on my walk past there as they were firing up and cleaning the grill and I have to admit that the smells made me hungry! Wonder how many they sold. They're probably at a disadvantage to the bigger stores because they have a smaller selection so most of us go elsewhere. I hope this helped business.

A local friend and farmer who raises beef cattle says the problem now is finding a butcher. All are so busy, they are on a wait list 2 months out to get meat processed.

I received a large order of beef and chicken from a local farm yesterday. Much pricier than the store, but I was able to order our preferred cuts and it was already packaged and frozen for me (although I much prefer fresh meat to frozen). I might do another round just to be sure and then call it. It’s very easy to go from stocking up to hoarding and I don’t want to overbuy and waste meat and money.
I’d like to get more bacon, sausages, and ham, but those are getting tougher to find. I’ll have to use my current stock sparingly. 😉

Just got back from Costco. We bought a large package of chicken thighs, pork tenderloin and a package of sirloin burgers.
No prime rib and no leg of lamb available for TD’s birthday dinner, so Plan C is going to be scallops.

I bought a gross of white towels when this started. Cut up about half, because I was cleaning a lot with no paper towels.
I’m thinking some form of diaper pail solution? Use and soak?
Sigh. 2020 is weird.

In times like these I think we should resurrect the Poop Knife thread.
