We tend to cook red meat and chicken in 4 oz portions per person; seafood can be 6 oz. It's pretty enlightening how little those portions are, isn't it? Those are typically the serving size that dietitians recommend. The chicken breasts I buy at Costco average 8 oz. and heaven knows what the meat on an Iowa-cut pork chop weighs- they're the size of a small steak. Also enlightening is looking at vintage dinnerware and glassware. Vintage "dinner" plates were 1/2 the size of today's dinner plate; cereal bowls too. And juice glasses held 4 oz whereas folks now fill an 8 oz glass with orange juice.

I'm definitely eating less meat since I started the Imperfect Foods. It's there, in the freezer. I just forget to take it out to thaw. I'm not super worried about freezer burn at this point because most of it has been in there only a couple weeks. But there's definitely more veggies going into and out of my fridge, even when I don't order much. I've also found that I'm not a fan of plain soup. It has to have chunks of veggies in it as well. Plus, putting veggies in soup is a great way to use up the wilty stuff. Like, yesterday, I just chopped up the remaining celery into my new favorite: Wolfgang Puck Tomato Basil Bisque.

No one is starving here. And I lucked out when an old ice cream shop went out of business and I scored 18 6 oz. juice glasses. You can't find those anywhere. Larger glasses are for water or beer!

www.cnn.com/2020/05/03/opinions/meat-processing-plant-donald-trump-bailey/index.html Maybe there's a better way to eat than making meat the centerpiece of just about every meal, particularly given that we think this coronavirus jumped from animals to humans.
Our bodies can survive without eating pork or beef or chicken or any other meat.I thought this summed up pretty good how I've been feeling when I see people panic buying meat. Between that and thinking about the people who can't get any groceries right now let alone panic buy 8 packages of chicken breasts like I saw one person doing I told myself I wasn't going to participate in it. We can survive just fine without consuming the amounts of meat we regularly consume. It's become a habit and one I've been meaning to change anyhow. I already switched to only buying from a local butcher who owns the farm directly which limits how much I buy because it is more expensive. I can take the next step and not buy anymore once this runs out if there isn't any to be had or one lone package of breasts on the shelf. Let someone else have it.

I have two chicken breasts left in the fridge. I haven't bought anymore.
The last time I ate beef was Christmas Eve. I finally figured out that beef was hurting my stomach and haven't had any since.
I can't say I will stop eating meat altogether but I am definitely not panicking over a shortage. As long as there is food of some sort I will survive.

My husband and I go to a wine beer and food festival every year, and we get to keep 2 sample glasses from the event. These hold 6 oz. We started with wine glasses with stems, but as the years went on, they added more beer and a stemless option, so we have lots of both! It helps to keep the amount of wine we drink to a reasonable level. I usually fill it halfway, and sometimes have a second half.

My grocery store is limiting us to 2 pounds of meat, or 3 pounds of ground beef. I'm not sure what they are doing about fish and seafood - that counter is on the other side and I didn't go over there.

Depends on what you mean by jumped from animal to human. The not conspiracy stuff I've seen has basically said there's no way the virus survived cooking so unless we're talking sushi that wasn't the method. So limiting meat consumption doesn't do much unless we stop having pets too. Or that's not the trajectory of the virus 🤷🏻♀️

I thought he meant more that in our continuous desire to eat meat we're encroaching on the environment and taking risks we really don't need to.
We destroy environments to make room for pigs and cows only to release animals we aren't normally in contact with out into society. We then decide that maybe we also want to eat said animals and set up markets for them. A bat may not infect us but it could infect a livestock animal that becomes an intermediate host to make the leap to us.
Our health depends on us changing our diets more than we ever realized. The more we destroy the Earth to make way for cows and pigs, the more we capture and eat animals in our quest for novelty the more things we're going to be exposed to.
This does fit pretty nicely into the exotic pet trade too come to think about it.
ETA: And I also realize I am privileged enough to say that. Not everyone across can make major alterations to their diets. This is another problem in society with the way we subsidize food production and how we handle distribution. We got a lot of things we need to work on if we expect to survive as a species.

Wendy’s also advertises never frozen meat, so this makes sense.

I do feel bad for the low carb eaters. My dad is diabetic and meat is a large part of his diet.

Chicken was wiped out at Woodman's on Sunday afternoon. It was gorgeous here all weekend so I suspect a lot of people grilled out too. Ground meat seemed fine. I usually pick up 2 packs of ground beef every week. I've got about 6 lbs in the freezer, plus venison and some sausages. I think they're still limiting to 2 packs of red meat.

DH was giving me a hard time about topping off our meat supply. Then, when we saw three packages of BSCB for $1.37 a pound, he had no problem with grabbing them. Any time I find a markdown like that, I grab it.

Wendy’s also advertises never frozen meat, so this makes sense. While technically true, there is a meat processing plant not far from me that produces the meat patties for Wendy's. One of our sales reps toured the facility. He said they store the meat barely above freezing, so it is kinda par frozen.

My husband is also on a diet/working on getting back in shape. So we're both trying to keep our protein up. Fortunately, our state doesn't seem to be having any shortages/shutdowns in meat processing yet. BTW, I read something about covid that made it seem like keeping carbs down is a good idea. I really don't remember specifically what it was, but probably had to do with inflammation.

One thing we always have a ton of in this house is meat...too much honestly. I get 1/4 or 1/2 of beef every year for letting neighbor plant corn and I buy bulk chicken and fish from Sam's Club. We probably have 200 pounds of meat in the freezer right now. Think we'll be ok for awhile.

That's the vicious cycle of carbs. It's easier not to eat so much if you stay away from them. Protein and fat keeps me satiated much longer than carbs. (I know how you feel. I looooved carbs when I was a kid, and hated meat. I mean, who doesn't, really? I just have to focus on how they make me feel afterward, which is not good.)

Me too. I can eat them non-stop. That's the viscious cycle of carbs. It's easier not to eat so much if you stay away from them. Protein and fat keeps me satiated much longer than carbs. This was definitely my experience when I did keto. Once my body got used to very few carbs each day the only reason I ate was for sustenance. I realize that's the point of eating what I mean is eating certain foods is more enjoyable but when I eat a diet with more carbs I definitely eat more throughout the day. On keto I ate my 3 main meals and something in the mid to late afternoon before exercising. I never had times where I felt like I was low on energy and I definitely can't say the same when I'm eating more carbs.

We shopped today. Made it 12 days this time without going to the grocery. Almost all meat was available, although some cuts were low. I think more from demand than shortage. I have no idea where our discount PNW grocery gets it's meat from.
But there was no "fresh" seafood. The stuff usually on ice next to the deli.
Probably because of this Not sure why that would affect gulf shrimp and Atlantic salmon however.

I can't decide which is more horrible- eating an entire package of bacon in one sitting or 1lb of ground beef in a sitting! Ack! I'd use a pound of ground beef in chili and we'd eat it as a family for 3 meals or so! We are veg forward but do like a bit of bacon on top. Your family can't finish a package of bacon in one sitting? No. Need to work on it I guess.

Man. I got a rotisserie chicken from Costco last week. First thing I did was shred it all and make broth with the bones in my instant pot. Then I made a platter of enchiladas which fed us all for dinner and lunch the next day. Then I made a huge chicken and spring veggie soup with some shredded meat and some broth. It'll feed us again a dinner and a lunch for all of us at least. Then I had a pound of chicken left that I didn't know what to do with so I threw it in the freezer. I'll make 2 more meals at least with that chicken. All from one 5.99? chicken.
We use meat just as as another ingredient. Sure, it was "chicken" enchiladas but it also had onions, peppers, corn and zucchini inside. Served with a nice spanish rice and grapefruit salad. We just don't eat big piles of meat typically. Even steak we usually do kabobs or beef and broccoli or something where it's not just meat on it's own.

See that you do .... We eat a ton of veggies. But we like meat too. I just got an order of salmon today, so stocked up on that. It's cheaper to buy 20 lb at a time, so i do.

Meat is an ingredient, not the centerpiece. If the meal doesn't have veggies (at least for lunch or dinner), it's not a meal.

My Aldi this morning had tons of pork and chicken, but not too much beef. Round steak, ground beef, and a couple of pieces of fajita meat. I grabbed pork chops and chicken breasts.

I hadn't been able to find top sirloin for a month. Today there were 2 and I took both of them. I felt bad, but I had menu plans for both of them.

I (for absolutely no good reason) feel like there will be meat at the store. It may not be the meat you want, and it may cost way more than it does normally, but I'm hoping if you are flexible in both meal plans and budget, you won't be meatless. Easy for me to say. I can handle paying more for groceries.
