I've been looking for tuna for a while. Amazon had a bunch of options in stock this morning, so I ordered 1 or 2 of each multi pack. Yesterday I tried to order the same tuna and it was $1 cheaper per package! Then, by the time I got to checkout, it was OOS. I have been watching the prices of groceries go up nearly every day. Even locally things are more expensive. The local ranchers have been offering 1/2 a cow, etc... but I have the smallest freezer ever and hate the flavor of grass-fed beef. DS and I have considered getting a fishing license. There are tons of local options for getting out and catching some dinner. I could never eat meat and be fine, but my DS lives on meat and starch... He's supposed to limit meat and eat more vegetables because of the kidney stones, so this will be a good excuse to cook him non-meat, veggie heavy meals.

I hope I'm not turning into a hoarder over this coronavirus. Every time I read threads like this, I add more meat to my grocery order.
I have had meat for up to a year in the basement freezer with no freezer burn, as long as there was no air in the package. I don't know about the 5 pound bag of frozen chicken breasts that I just added to my grocery order though, they aren't individually wrapped the way that I normally buy them.
My sister in law texted me a picture from one of our local grocery stores and the meat aisle was completely empty. But it was the discount grocery store, so I think they would empty out faster than the other stores.

I just gotta wonder how much freezer burned meat (from home freezers) is gonna get chucked into the trash 8 to 10 weeks from now when people "stock up". Can a family really eat $500 of meat in 6 to 8 weeks? That's like $12.00 of meat per day... FWIW: I wondering, too, about all the weird stuff - like tongue and chicken feet and liver (and ham hocks) that's probably gonna fly off the shelf - is that really gonna get eaten? or will all just go bad in some "hoarders" freezer/fridge? I had problems finding Tofu, too. But then I caught a break and one of the stores I was shopping had just refilled the "tofu/not meat section". I was tempted to buy 2 or 3 tubs of it - but then common sense took over and I purchased the 1 tub I actually needed (as per my menu plan). I'm not really a dyed in the wool vegetarian/vegan. Hmmm... Breakfast: bacon or sausage, one package, ~$6 Lunch: deli turkey, 1/8 pound sliced, ~$2 Dinner: hamburger meat, one pound, ~$4 Totally doable. I know many people who eat that much, if not more. I can't decide which is more horrible- eating an entire package of bacon in one sitting or 1lb of ground beef in a sitting! Ack! I'd use a pound of ground beef in chili and we'd eat it as a family for 3 meals or so! We are veg forward but do like a bit of bacon on top.

You can freeze bacon again after you fry it up. That's how I get "bacon sprinkles" to top my salads with.

And one pound of hamburger is, like, three hamburgers. So, a family of 3-4 could eat that other amount easily. What gets me is how much bread and other grains makes up the average person's daily eating: cereal, bagels, sandwiches, cookies, pasta, crackers, etc. Folks can go a whole day and not have ONE veggie OR any amount of protein.

My sister in law texted me a picture from one of our local grocery stores and the meat aisle was completely empty. But it was the discount grocery store, so I think they would empty out faster than the other stores. I do the same thing. However, I remind myself of the massive pantries my grandparents and others used to have back in the day. In our current time, many of us don't have big gardens and can the excess, go hunting each fall, etc... Since we can drive down the road anytime we want to a grocery store, I think we've all gotten in the habit of letting them store our food instead of having the big pantries. I don't want thousands of dollars of food lying around the house or waste, but I also think it's important right now to be self-sufficient. I'm also seeing prices going up, so stocking up a bit now saves money over time. I think there's a big difference between being self-sufficient and hoarding. To me, hoarding implies buying tons of stuff you won't ever eat. I used to have a friend who grew up in Israel. She used to always say something major was going to happen in this country, there would be supply chain disruptions, and eventually food riots in the street when food shortages happened. I can't say I disagree with that if we stay on the current trajectory. I don't think it's all doom and gloom though. I do think for most people food will be around. I think stocking up makes it so you can stay home longer if you want/need and ensure you have dietary options you prefer.

So once again, it may not be an issue of supply as much as an issue of people hoarding for fear of a supply issue.

I was at the super sized Walmart this morning. Small cans of Bushs baked beans were no where to be found. But the biggest cans were stacked high on an end cap on the main aisle. Little supply of Ortega sauces, also little available of cans of Rotel. As usual, the hand sanitizer was long gone and also the disinfectant of spray Lysol etc. and other similar items. Canned soup was not to plentiful either.
Lots of ice cream and I did my damage in that aisle and also a little of the produce.
Frankly, I am disappointed in how much is missing from the largest store they have ever built @ 188K sf. However, I think I'm done grocery shopping for quite awhile. Should be enough for at least 3 weeks.

Once, my husband had the idea to cook a pound of bacon to use on his sandwiches for the week. He snacked as he cooked, and wouldn't you know, he only had four slices of bacon for his sandwiches, lol. He never attempted that again. He's 6'1" and 150 lb, so it surprised me he could eat all that. Stupid fast metabolism.

my kids can put away a pound of bacon each in one sitting. They're hogs.
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), too much bacon makes me sick. I can have a few strips, the have to be extra crispy, otherwise it kills me.

Certain greasy/fried stuff, or too much of a fatty food is no bueno. One day I had a large package of bacon in the fridge that needed to be cooked. I fried all of it and put it in back the fridge, snacking along the way. We had bacon with dinner and the next morning I ate about 6 pieces of it for breakfast. Then I decided to go hiking in the woods. The only paper product I had in the car or my hiking bag was a single thin McDonald's napkin. I never thought I would use leaves to wipe my butt, but when you eat that much bacon in a short period of time and then go hiking and have no TP, that's your fate...

And people are now hoarding meat. DF went to wegmans after he got done working and the only thing left was pork chops. He was there earlier today working and the shelves were full. He ran to our local store to try to get chicken and hamburger. His parents want the hamburger.
We have enough food to last for several weeks but I want to prepare meals to freeze. I’ve been dropping cooked dinners off at my moms to make sure she is taken care of

I checked on ND. The smaller packing places are function just fine. Few employees, like 6. They will custom process. The people who face being snowed in for weeks or even months, they stock up. It's not hoarding.
I told my DD about the producers culling animals so the food banks can get there. We've had vacuum sealed wild game meat and wild caught halibut for a couple of years or more and no freezer burn. Mid-September, the older stuff goes to the butcher to make slim jims. Not a cheap option.
I would rather not have a whole chicken. I'm spoiled with breast no skin or bones. No one has talked about whole canned chickens. I haven't looked at the shelves for a long time. I do buy canned chicken to have on hand for a lot of meals. Perkins in ND has opened their restaurant as a grocer. They had TP, paper towels, bulk pork chops and hamburgers. I don't remember all the rest. Another restaurant also switched to a grocer but also provided baked goods!
