Guess it is now or never my chance to become vegetarian!!
We were warned last week that it was coming, my district manager went out and bought ~$500 worth of meat. I don’t have the room nor capacity for that and I don’t plan on buying an extra freezer just for this occasion.
In our last conference call it was discussed. Yes trump signed an executive order, yes plants will try to stay open but the issue is not the plants being open: the issue is the same we are having with our own warehouse ; finding people willing to continue working and risking their lives for it.
Those warehouses were never built to function with people working six feet apart; at least not to continue cracking the volume they are used to. My company has tried making some adjustments but it also means less trucks: only 2 frozen trucks instead of 4, 3 grocery trucks instead of 5, etc.
One solution they will start chipping meat to stores in “bulk”... aka our meat cutters are going to have to be actual meat cutters. Not an issue for us but I know some chain stores that their meat cutters have not cut actual meat in forever since every thing already come precut and prepackaged. We will see
The new world under covid continues.

back away from the tofu, meateaters!
We've been having trouble staying stocked for a while - our tofu consumption is about 1/3 of what is it typical just because it isn't available.

Yeah we have been having issues keeping it in stock at my store to for the past ~2. weeks since meat shortage started... a case sells out quickly (same day) while in the past 1 case of each kind would be there for weeks. Sorry!

any issues keeping fresh produce stocked? What are the expectations there?
We are loading up on rice and beans, but need things to go with that.
As an insider, how worrying is the future of the food supply/supply chain?

Make a road trip to the Midwest where farmers are practically giving away hogs and chickens because their only other option is to shoot and bury.

I placed a $300 order for beef and chicken with a local farmer yesterday. It will be delivered next week.
I guess I should also top off my bacon and spicy sausage supply or things could get ugly around here. 😉

We've ordered off and on from a meat csa which just last month switched to all mail order... fortuitous. I had placed an order in April but placed another one for this week because frankly I'm worried 'normal' people will find out about them. There are other local farmers too... some are only taking fall orders, but I'm thinking maybe I'll sign up now.
If worse comes to worst, I don't think game wardens are going to be monitoring my father's 200 acres.

As an insider, how worrying is the future of the food supply/supply chain? Produce is actually the only department that we have not had any issues or major issues with and we have recovered nicely, I believe last I checked yesterday their delivery rate for us is 95%... no not much out of stock (5%) at the warehouse and we have variety. For us right now the warehouse has become the issue and it affects the store and how we are able to service customers. When associates in the warehouse are getting sick this causing 50-100 of them to call out each day/shift then it affects productivity and the likely hood of getting what we ordered on time, if ever (we’ve had deliveries canceled due to shortage of associates). Organizations needs employees to keep running; they have been giving lip service for years now to the “most valuable assets are your employees” and now they are paying for it. Poor work conditions = group of people get sick or die = the remainder that are not sick want nothing to do with it.

As an insider, how worrying is the future of the food supply/supply chain? You might look into Imperfect Foods or Misfits food delivery. Because they don't have "perfect" produce, there's...well...not more of it but...I guess...more options. I switched to that a couple weeks ago and have found that I'm eating a bigger variety of veggies since it got me out of just buying what I "normally" get.

I can't have soy replacements due to allergies. It would get very boring very quickly for me.
I'd have plenty of hamburger if I'd just go get it. I never brought my share of last year's cow my family purchased here because I was still using previous stuff. WV is beginning to re-open but MD is not.

I figure this is a good opportunity to break old habits. I have a lot of vegeterian/vegan recipes that I like or want to try but DH is NOT a plant eater. I get into a rut cooking because he can be so picky sometimes. This is as good an excuse as any to start forcibly moving him in the other direction.
Thug Kitchen is excellent for vegan recipes. There is a lot more to the world of meatless cooking than just soy. Their beer braised cauliflower tacos are one of my favorites.

nidena can you pick produce? We have weird sensitivities in my family, and definite favorites... Yep. When you first sign up, you can pick general categories and that's your "default box" but you can choose from categories you haven't selected and you can remove items from your default box. Here's a link for you to browse with. You also choose your household size. For my household of one, I spend $30-$60 each week. Once you set up your subscription, you get four days to amend your box then it's ships a couple days later. Like, I can starting amending at noon today (Thursday) until noon on Sunday and then they ship on Tuesday, arriving between 3 and 8pm. The food is very fresh, right out of the ground in some cases. I just made kale chips last night because the kale I received on Tuesday was wilting. lol.

I just gotta wonder how much freezer burned meat (from home freezers) is gonna get chucked into the trash 8 to 10 weeks from now when people "stock up". Can a family really eat $500 of meat in 6 to 8 weeks? That's like $12.00 of meat per day... FWIW: I wondering, too, about all the weird stuff - like tongue and chicken feet and liver (and ham hocks) that's probably gonna fly off the shelf - is that really gonna get eaten? or will all just go bad in some "hoarders" freezer/fridge? I had problems finding Tofu, too. But then I caught a break and one of the stores I was shopping had just refilled the "tofu/not meat section". I was tempted to buy 2 or 3 tubs of it - but then common sense took over and I purchased the 1 tub I actually needed (as per my menu plan). I'm not really a dyed in the wool vegetarian/vegan.

I'm approaching year 24 of no meat. Y'all will survive. We are all made differently. I don’t need a lot of meat. But if I don’t have some lean animal protein I just don’t function well.

Just keep in mind: when you first start converting to more veggies, your digestive system might not like you so much due to increased, uh, production.

DF is getting as much meat as he can today. It is warm enough for our fridge/freezer in the garage so that is ready to be filled. Worst case, he has a hunting cabin up by the NY border. I don't think it will come to that as we probably have about 20 lbs of meat already but who knows what will happen in the next few months.

Our grocery store is "upscale" and we don't have budget issues. I wouldn't be surprised if there is always some kind of meat available - but what kind, and how much i have to pay is questionable. There isn't much I can do, but wait and see what happens. If I don't get meat, I don't get meat. I won't die right away.

I agree. but there's the issue of freezer burn (which doesn't make the meat un-eatable - just different)... Maybe it's because I'm thinking people will 'repackage' the meat they've bought? Maybe when you leave meat in the original packaging and freeze it it doesn't get ice crystals/freezer burn? Maybe my chest freezer isn't the best quality?

I had a friend who threw a grocery bag full of tomatoes into their chest freezer at some point. Needless to say, they were all kinds of burned when I cleaned out the freezer in November.

I don't know. I come from a family of hunters, so freezing meat is a long term prospect There are sometimes issues, but if you get air out, double bag or vacuum seal it isn't generally an issue. I actually had more trouble from the salmon place last year, which is unusual and unhappy given how much I pay for it... that their seals didn't keep and I ended up with a lot of iced portions.

I have learned it is not and soy is no longer on my radar when I shop.
