to the virus...Using the "Smithfield" pork processing plant workers as examples..If u are lucky as I am so far as not being directly affected, a read of the article will give u a better feeling of what is happening in the real world... Suggest read the whole article...It's not that Pork products may be in short supply ..it's the cost to your fellow Americans that is most important... {I didn't know Smithfield" was owned by a Chinese Billionaire, did u?} --------------------------------------------------------------- www.yahoo.com/news/coronavirus-meatpacking-workers-204636613.html

I'm guessing that's the same story I read on BBC.com. What a shitshow.

I'm pretty sure most meat packing plants employ large numbers of legal immigrants (some may or maynot be citizens). Those jobs are not particularly pleasant or easy and are often low paying... Just thought I'd throw that out there... America exports a substantial amount of pork products to China. I wonder if that has anything to do with the ownership of Smithfield? As in, from a China perspective it makes financial sense for them to have some 'ownership' ?

And there is a real stupid rumor that the Smithfield in the U.S. ships live pigs to China for that country to slaughter and process the pork products and then ship the products back to the U.S. with the disclaimer that the pigs were raised in the U.S.A. Can you imagine a boat load or a plane load of live pigs being shipped by boat (which will take days to complete) or the live pigs in aircraft containers being flown to China? I can't imagine it. Definitely not cost effective.

With Workers earning $11.00 TO $13.00 A HOUR it is cost effective Tenn. It costs more to ship the live pigs by boat or plane to China and back than to process the pigs in the country where they were born and raised. And that would be why it's a "rumor". I have no doubt the pigs are raised and slaughtered here and then frozen and shipped to China. Maybe the pigs are being shipped 'whole' (you can buy a pig at a local butcher - to roast at home - my family has done it a number of times) versus sending porkchops and tenderloins and heads and feet and shoulders. Applying Occam's razor to this "rumor" (for me atleast) sez it's highly unlikely pigs that will be slaughtered immediately in China are being shipped there from America. I can see minimally processed pig carcasses are being frozen and shipped to China (and to other countries.)
