How come every time I see a Gov give a speech there is always a sign language translator? Yet trump's political rallies called "Covid updates" I don't recall seeing one? Maybe I missed it and if I have I apologize.

Discrimination? Hell yes. Why should the deaf get out of "hearing" Trump?

While I am deaf, I did not grow up in Deaf culture, nor did I know anyone else who was deaf or HOH until I was an adult. I do know that ASL is a language unto itself with its own grammar and syntax. If I am not mistaken, captions are not necessarily fully effective for the Deaf community. I do belong to several deaf and HOH support groups and it is very evident the people who are in the Deaf community. Their command of English language is similar to a foreigner trying to express themselves in English. The federal Covid updates should have interpreters. Period.

The reason I notice it is because my daughter is taking a sign language class in college. I told her she could get a job doing that!

jelloshots4all - I am checking with a hearing impaired friend of mine who also teaches ASL. I believe he watches the daily updates.

I really never thought about this. There should be. I cannot remember if President Obama always had a sign language person at all his pressers. He might of, just not sure.

There is a major difference between a standard presser and critical information that the administration needs to convey to the public. A standard presser may not need an interpreter, but in a situation like this where it is important for ALL Americans to obtain disaster information it is imperative that information is relayed so ALL Americans can understand. I have no doubt that this information is being relayed real-time in Spanish. ASL is no different.
