The Western states are also joining together, since their early intervention has helped flatten the curve. Newsom let the medical people talk about what how are thinking of opening up - it will not be soon and they may also take it back, but they are slowly planning for it. www.nytimes.com/2020/04/13/us/politics/coronavirus-response-california-washington-oregon.htmlLOS ANGELES — California, Oregon and Washington have more ventilators than they can use. As the nation struggles to scrounge up the lifesaving machines for hospitals overrun with Covid-19 patients, these three Western states recently shipped 1,000 spares to New York and other besieged neighbors to the East. “All NYC needs is love …. From CA,” a worker scrawled in Magic Marker on a ventilator shipping box, shown in a video posted on Twitter by the governor of California, Gavin Newsom. The ongoing effort of three West Coast states to come to the aid of more hard-hit parts of the nation has emerged as the most powerful indication to date that the early intervention of West Coast governors and mayors might have mitigated, at least for now, the medical catastrophe that has befallen New York and parts of the Midwest and South. I heard 15 minutes of a 45 minute speech from Newsome this morning. it is PRECISELY what I would hope that Trump would do, but won't. and I am not a Newsome fan. well, not before this morning, anyway.

I often said that I live in one of the states that best fits my political opinions, but damn am I ever happy I don't live in Indiana where they have this sorry excuse for a human being representing them, This creature does not even pretend to care for human life (we really should look up his voting record on abortion. That could be very interesting):
"Washington (CNN)An Indiana congressman said Tuesday that letting more Americans die from the novel coronavirus is the "lesser of two evils" compared with the economy cratering due to social distancing measures.
Speaking with radio station WIBC in Indiana, Republican Rep. Trey Hollingsworth asserted that, while he appreciated the science behind the virus' spread, "it is always the American government's position to say, in the choice between the loss of our way of life as Americans and the loss of life, of American lives, we have to always choose the latter." "The social scientists are telling us about the economic disaster that is going on. Our (Gross Domestic Product) is supposed to be down 20% alone this quarter," Hollingsworth said. "It is policymakers' decision to put on our big boy and big girl pants and say it is the lesser of these two evils. It is not zero evil, but it is the lesser of these two evils and we intend to move forward that direction. That is our responsibility and to abdicate that is to insult the Americans that voted us into office."

I told you, there are some very weird people in Indiana. And its getting worse. I'm sorry I came back to this state, but I didn't like Texas either. Not sure what part of the country I belong in, maybe the northwest? Can't say.

dj, yeh, I get it. If we closed grocery stores and WMT it would be a battle of the fittest left standing. I just think people in the service, DOD, police depatments, etc, know what they signed up for in emergency situations. Their life is on the line. When I was drafted, I did not ask to go to war, they sent me, but my life was on the line for 14 months overseas. Retail people are used to getting sick from fellow workers and customers every winter from flu, bad coughs even gut infections because they share restrooms with the customers who bring the problem in with them, but they never signed up for dying from the virus and even people here on the boards use these stores for necessities, while possibly infecting, or picking up the virus from the workers. The retail stores were the last to supply masks to workers, etc. Retail workers are now added to the list of the dying and I think most know there are many retail workers who are not really healthy or young in these jobs these days ......

I never suggested we close grocery stores.
disclosure: I have not EVER bought a SINGLE grocery item at WMT.
you asked me to say it, so I said it: SHUT THEM DOWN.

I do. Pat, you and the hubby and DD would be a perfect fit for Washington and Oregon. I don't know. I live in rural Eastern Oregon and my county is planning on opening everything up "since there's no virus here" and "the area's businesses rely on tourism!" There's also a movement to have high school graduation for the community based on the same argument there's no virus here. No one seems to care there's also no testing... I expect we will have an outbreak before long... This is a great place to live if you believe the bible will protect you or that your American freedom means you can get the virus if you choose. If you believe the science, not so much. Then again, there's millions of miles of BLM land for social distancing once the area opens up to more risk. I'll spend my summer in the desert.

I just know that since trump has been in I have seen an ugly side I never knew existed here. I am totally disillusioned with these folks. And our state is 48th on education and such now, horrible.
Hubs said oh son needs to go to Texas, housing is cheaper. I told son, go to Seattle like you guys want. Hell no, stay out of Texas. He said good school systems there for little guy, DIL's sister is there that is good. She is very artsy, she will fit somewhere like that. And he makes good money and is thrifty, they will be fine. Sell the house for what you can get and go. I think he will be happier too. If I end up alone and am able, I will go and rent something up there too. I don't expect them to care for me other then paperwork and will go in assisted living or whatever, till whatever happens. And I'm betting healthcare is better there too. So yep, I think it will be a good move for them, he is still planning on it.

I and my fellow health care workers signed up for this. Police, firefighters, EMTs signed up for this. Grocery workers did not sign up to die for $15/hour for this. They are unfortunate victims to our need to supply food to the rest of us. So, yes, they deserve our sympathy, concern, and thanks for doing a thankless job, so the rest of us can continue to live. And anyone who does not comply with the necessary restrictions, or disses them for there concerns is an ass.

My DS is a "grocery worker". He makes $11 per hour with no benefits. Not $15.

Not sure what part of the country I belong in, maybe the northwest? Can't say. There's parts of Western California that are nice! But they are a bit pricey in the liberal areas. Most of the west coast is pretty liberal, if we could seceded from the US and join Canada, we probably would.

The thing with the DOD is that many of them CAN work remotely. I understand they are essential, so is my project. But anyone who CAN work from home, should. Grocery workers can't work from home. I wish they were paid more. Even before this pandemic!

Son may have to go back the 1st to an office with an active virus person, sure he is out, but who has he been in contact with?
My one tenant said he got an email to go back the 4th of May. There are going to be so many sick and dead. I'm staying in as much as possible, but if we escape it I would be surprised. I don't want to order from Kroger as Sams prices are better in a lot of stuff, but I have to go in there and though more customers have masks, maybe 1 in 15 of the workers do.
DD and I got a sandwich at the drive through at Subway and a soda, I washed the cups down and the chip bags, but I doubt that protects us. Hubs said you are going to mess around and get it. I told him I let my guard down for a minute I'm probably going to get it anyway. I have no resistance and this is just exhausting. Cleaned all my packaging today. Mail is strung all over the freezer for a few days. Using cards instead of money and on and on.
But I think to go back should be a choice and people should not be fired or disciplined for it.

I was going to say unless WMT pays $11 people in this town are lucky to make $10.
When he opens this people are going to get sick and die all over. And folks like us will be forced to stay in for years.

I guess you guys from blue states are now thankful that we have a thing called states rights?
My FIL lives in a purple state. He is working some telemarketing job, which has somehow gotten classified as an 'essential business'. So he has to go in even though he could do his job just fine from home. Complete madness.

We've never NOT been thankful for state rights. But there are certain CIVIL rights that should be at the federal level. A man should be able to keep his job even if he is gay, no matter if he lives in California or Alabama. Likewise, if California is experiencing an outbreak, they should be able to shut down to stop the spread, without having to wait until Nebraska is also infected. Its not that hard to understand, you're just choosing not to.
