ISO may have cancer

ISO went to the hospital with pneumonia and now they are suspecting cancer. They drew a needle of fluid from his lungs and talking chemo. He said I have the paperwork to pull the plug and he doesn't want to run up doctor bills so I can inherit more. Talking sell the motorcycle to pay for cremation. They told him resuscitate can break his ribs. I told him I get the cats and he can sell his rifles to pay for cremation.

First he may not even have cancer, next chemo might work, then broken ribs can heal, I can't pull the plug unless they plug him in. But he always said I got the cats. I don't want or need his money, cremation is cheap anyhow. He doesn't need rifles he quit hunting years ago so he should sell them. He has had a stroke and maybe another and passed out yesterday so selling the motorcycle at age 72 isn't a bad idea. Medical bills aren't a problem he has great insurance, his stroke and 13 days medical care cost zero and prescriptions are $1 each, not worth dying to save money, I don't need money anyhow, he just feels the need to leave me something. 

They gave him antibiotics last month and now again today, maybe he will just get better and go home and ride his motorcycle.

I’m sorry. But it seems a little premature to start divvying up one’s belongings. How old is he? Aside from the strokes, is he generally in good enough health to do the things he likes to do? Tell him to wait for the results and see what chances the doctors give him.

He may be trying to pass off his concerns as being about money when really he is afraid of cancer.  Most of us are.  Tell him if he dares to die, you are going to sell everything and give it to whatever group directly opposes the NRA or some other group he strongly supports.  Make him laugh and hopefully he will see how silly he is being to worry about money right now. 

He (and you) will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Oooh, I wish that I knew how to convince the dude that him continuing to breathe wasn't costing you a dime. 

Alas, my voice sounds funny and my face looks weird when I am talking out of my a**. 

On the other hand, you might be able to pull it off,  possibly because you wouldn't be lying or making anything up.  I can definitely think of scenarios where having him breathe for as long as possible actually puts you in a better spot.  If that is the case, well, is there a way of saying that without using the phrase "step-up-basis"?

He is 72 and fat and smoker. Used to hunt deer and elk but he would need to train for it and stop smoking. Around 1990 since he tried, still talks about hunting but not even target practice. We drove to the forest and it was very steep hills covered in dense foliage, trees, he said he couldn't get a deer out. He loves to fish the river in a jet sled but now the rivers are closed and after the stroke he wants me to come so I can get the boat back to the ramp if he has a stroke while fishing. But he never actually goes fishing more than 2-3 times a year, I didn't go once last year. He would fish more but it is too hot, too cold, lawn needs mowed, fish aren't in the river now or something else. We got the 5th wheel in Oct used it twice, they closed all campgrounds so no fishing, no camping, no hunting, but can sit in his chair with his cat and look online to see how many fish at the hatchery, and see the river out front and how many boats are on the river and think he will go soon, after he mows the lawn or goes to town for groceries, maybe tomorrow if he doesn't oversleep, he will only go fishing early in mornings wake at 9 and it is too late, have coffee try again tomorrow.

I don't want his belongings even the cats, thinking of having to sell the house, garage stuff, vehicles, boats and 5th wheel is overwhelming. Cats will move to my house because he wants me to have them, I like being pet free.

I was was told I might have cancer twice - both false positives. Tell him not to put the cart in front of the horse. 

I'm with him, though, when he comes to not not wanting to spend all my savings keeping myself alive for a few more months with expensive hospital care - but he's not there yet.  Hugs to you both.

What I learned with my husband is that if you have a decent supplement or whatever to Medicare, you won't spend a lot on medical care.  DH was in/out of hospitals and ERs for the six months leading up to his death.  We are talking four hospitalizations and four ERS plus regular doctor visits inbetween.   His medical bills were about $1000 at the end.  And we "only" had the Medicare Advantage plan that my state teacher insurance offered (plus regular Medicare).  

So while I also wouldn't want to spend my savings like that, it isn't likely to happen if he has good insurance, which Crone says he does.  Now if they are talking LTC, that is different.

Cancer, even if he has it, isn't the death sentence that many of us think it is.  Some, of course, is.  I have lost several family members and friends to it.  But I have just as many family members and friends that have survived.  

I'm not saying it will be ok.  I don't have a crystal ball.  But don't let him just give up.

My aunt had terminal cancer in 1980 didn't want chemo but took it anyhow, died in 2019 at age 91. Not everyone is dead soon, I will encourage him to keep trying even if he needs to quit smoking. When his dad died he told me emphysema ran in his family among the men who smoke. His dad and all smoking brothers got it but non smoking didn't. Last summer he didn't smoke for about 3-4 weeks, now can't smoke in hospital, was trying to quit last month. His stroke doctor said 1/3 come back to rehab and not drinking and smoking was a good idea. Pneumonia on top of breathing issues may be reason to quit. May not be cancer and might help him quit since he wants to and all the doctors want him to quit, nobody is in favor of him smoking, maybe quitting smoking and recovering will mean he can hunt in steep land again and haul out deer or plan to hunt like he plans to fish.

I am sorry to hear that he may have cancer. If that ends up being his diagnosis, please don't give up without trying some kind of treatment. They have made tremendous strides in the treatment of lung cancer over the last few years.

Test didn't show cancer but the cells look like cancer. On oxygen, going home tomorrow, having oxygen at home.

Hugs Crone! Glad your ISO is coming home.    Hopefully the cancer will stay away and he will develop healthier habits.

When I quit smoking I needed to go on an anti anxiety medication. Otherwise I spent all my time crying. Something to consider.
