Washington has been vote-by-mail for several years, officially and completely since 2011 as I recall. Until a couple of years ago, we had to put a stamp on the envelope. The state now pays for postage on ballots. Before then I was using ballot drop boxes which are set up at quite a few locations, particularly at libraries, to avoid having to even buy stamps. Vote-by-mail states have higher turnout, which the GOP admits will hurt them in elections.

But Ga. is throwing out a LOT of those votes if you haven't signed every piece EXACTLY as they have it printed on your materials. That's another one of their voter suppression games they play.
Example....mine...."first name, middle initial, last name
DH's....first name, FULL middle name, last name. If he had used only his initial...it would have been thrown out.

Just eight US governors have decided against issuing statewide directives urging their residents to stay at home as the outbreak of the coronavirus escalates and spreads across the country, the last holdouts in the nation. The governors, all of whom are Republican, have offered a variety of explanations for why they have not followed the lead of their colleagues from coast-to-coast -- along with countries across the world -- by ordering people to restrict their movement in hopes of slowing the pandemic. www.cnn.com/2020/04/04/politics/republican-governors-stay-at-home-orders-coronavirus/index.htmlThen they're going to be whining..."We need masks! We need ventilators! Help!"

I got mine yesterday Were you sure to tape only 1" shut at the bottom...actually it was at the top...with clear tape? I'd hate for ours to be rejected due to using too much tape.

What a mess. We have been exclusively vote by mail for over 20 years. Everyone registered gets a ballot. Fill it out. Put it in 1st envelope and sign that envelope. Then into 2nd envelope with no identifying information and put in the mail. We do have to use a stamp and it has to arrive by voting day. There are also many drop off sites.
It's economical for the State, convenient for everyone, very popular with both Democrats and Republicans and apparently better against voter fraud.

I just sent something to the Rant/Rave column in our local paper....not sure if it will get printed or not...

what is the difference between "absentee ballot" (which is available everywhere) and "vote by mail".

There is no longer any such thing as an absentee ballot. All voters receive their ballots in the mail. There are no longer any neighborhood polling places to go to even if you wanted to. It is believed that this is better for the voters, in that they can not only fill out their ballots at their convenience but can also have any notes they wish, such as the Voter's Guide which contains candidate profiles and statements and also explains all of the ballot measures and has arguments for and against each one, with them as they do it. No restricted voting hours, no lines, no problems. Works great, and you never have to leave your home.

I am sure it helped that I never had to do it anywhere that there were long lines

I used to walk down to my old elementary school, see the same people working the polls, remember how much bigger the school seemed decades ago.... Don't miss walking down in the rain though.

is "vote by mail" essentially forcing you to vote absentee (which was previously voluntary)?

Vote by mail....EVERYONE votes by mail...no request needed, you get a ballot in the mail & you fill it out & return it. There are NO polling places...it's all done by mail.
Absentee...has to be requested and some states require certain reasons to get that absentee ballot..or you can still vote in person at your polling place on election day.

I believe many states have very specific criteria / reasons for which someone can use an absentee ballot. Vote by mail is open to everyone. I am not absent, I just don't want to go to the polls.

In Oregon, increased voter turn out. In other words more people voting. And as I said before, more economical and lest fraud.

Turnout is significantly above the national average. This article is a few years old, but lays out the case for universal vote-by-mail. Vote from Home, Save Your Country

mail in ballots are generally more susceptible to fraud.
what makes you think otherwise?

I always wondered how easy it would be for mail in ballots to get “lost” and never counted.

Didn't we just spend a year telling Trumpers that there was no fraud at polling places, and that the fraud was done with the mail in ballots, which swing Republican, so they should shushie? Now we are saying there is less fraud with mail in ballots?

Signatures are checked before the ballot is counted, at least in Washington. Any fraud would have to be on a vote-by-vote basis. I don't know how other states handle absentee ballots, or if they have security measures in place.

I can see were postal employees intent on evil doing could way lay bags of ballots on their way to the counting house. And if they were from a particular area, it would target one party more than another. But it would be very obvious if it happened.

And every voter can check (if they wish to) to see if their ballot was received and counted. I generally return mine in the drop boxes when I can. Less chance of being misplaced or mishandled and doesn't cost the state postage.
