The latest count is 100 cases aboard. These are young, healthy people. The commander of an American nuclear-powered aircraft carrier docked in Guam that has been struck by a coronavirus outbreak has sent the Pentagon a strongly worded plea for urgent assistance. "The spread of the disease is ongoing and accelerating," USS Theodore Roosevelt commander Capt. Brett Crozier writes in a letter dated March 30. "Decisive action is required now in order to comply with CDC and [U.S. Navy] guidance and prevent tragic outcomes." Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly confirmed on March 26 that at least eight of the Roosevelt's more than 4,000 crew members had tested positive for COVID-19, five of whom had been removed from the ship. He added that while the vessel would be docked in Guam, those aboard would not be allowed to venture beyond the pier. Officials tell NPR that the aircraft carrier, whose home port is San Diego, now has more than 50 known cases of infected sailors. The ship's commander writes that except for a "handful" of senior officers' staterooms, none of the ship's quarters meet the recommended guidelines for isolation and quarantine. www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/03/31/824633524/outbreak-on-u-s-aircraft-carrier-accelerating-commander-warns-pentagonExclusive: Captain of aircraft carrier with growing coronavirus outbreak pleads for help from Navy The captain of a nuclear aircraft carrier with more than 100 sailors infected with the coronavirus pleaded Monday with U.S. Navy officials for resources to allow isolation of his entire crew and avoid possible deaths in a situation he described as quickly deteriorating. www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Exclusive-Captain-of-aircraft-carrier-with-15167883.php

that's stupid. You can't maintain readiness when you're dead.

It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

Yep, billis. I'm one who uses the term "guys" in its genderless form.

One of our tenants is getting deployed today on the Nimitz and had to break the lease. They are allowed to do this. So off they go for 9 months. She called it a Petri dish!

Many a battle in the past was won or lost based on the health of the troops. Difficult for sick people to fight, and they are a perfect vessel for contagion. Another stupid decision. Go into port, sterilize, and assess how many are ill to know how effective you can function.
