I'm using DHs hankies. Tie opposite corners around my head and tuck the bottom into my t-shirt. I have some blue paper shop towels and I might tuck one inside.
When I have this hankie on, I'm finding my breathing isn't like before. Sorta suffocating but I'll get used to it. Need to figure this out.
Any ideas?

When my mask order comes in from Etsy, it will be interesting to see how well I am going to manage. I don't have much real estate behind my ears what with glasses and cochlear implants which are constantly on the verge of slipping off the ear.

Ok , so serious question - how do I wear a mask without my glasses fogging up ? It’s driving me crazy . Maybe I’m just a heavy breather . 😜 You probably need to seal the mask across the top (and down the sides for added safety) to keep exhaled air from departing the mask in that direction. You can use the kind of 2-sided tape beauty pageant contestants and ice skaters use to prevent "wardrobe accidents." (You can probably get hypoallergenic tape if adhesive allergies are a problem). A lot of the more serious masks intended for use by medical professionals also have a little flexible metal (probably aluminum) band at the top of the mask that can be formed over the bridge of the nose to reduce gaps at the top of the mask, but I don't know how one would replicate that in a DIY mask.

I’m trying a pattern called the Olsen mask. It has a little channel at the top to insert bendable wire. I have some flexible garden wire that I’m using. Other sewers are using jewelry wire and other items

I thought about buying wide floral wire and sewing it in the top, but worried about the ends poking through and cutting someones face. Still the cloth ones are better then nothing. I'm reusing one of mine, I bought in Feb, have 8 of them left.

I thought of this when I saw a white guy in a bandana. He looked like he was going to get on his horse and rob a train. I wonder if he knew he looked like an old-timey criminal. But it occured to me that everyone wearing a mask could do something shady, and I wouldn't be able to identify them. Being in an upscale grocery store and most people in there wearing Lululemon or above, I figured I wasn't in danger, but I might have felt less secure at the old school small convienece store a mile away, or the grocery store down the street that always has shady characters in it.

Pipe cleaners, like you used to make stuff with as a kid? That might work, if the wire was stout enough. Added benefit, if you used the larger pipe cleaners and sewed it to the outside of the mask (glue probably wouldn't work on pipe cleaners), you could fashion it into a jaunty little caterpillar with googly eyes and maybe a little hat or a bow and add some cheer to the mask. (I would totally do this if I were actually going out.) Now I want to make a mask with a caterpillar on it.

There are 14,000 articles and you tube videos showing how to sew masks, and how to make masks without sewing. Maybe more. It would take you a few minutes to figure something out, no matter your resources. My favorite one had a little pocket in it, and you were supposed to put a coffee filter in it, and change it out every outing. Not sure how much better it makes it, but it feels like it is something. www.businessinsider.com/homemade-mask-using-hydro-knit-shop-towel-filters-better-2020-4 An article about someone who tested filters, I don't think i saw coffee filter on it though. I saw this article, but is there an actual pattern/instructions to make a mask with shop towels yet?

I came back to this tread because I need to make some masks for my family. I have a sewing machine and know how to sew, but I will need to order supplies blind from JoAnn Fabrics.
Can someone give me a supply list and a list of what I need so I can order it?
Thanks!

I saw this article, but is there an actual pattern/instructions to make a mask with shop towels yet? I don't think they've released it. If you click through from the article there's a gofundme and a way to order - but there's no ship date yet since they're still doing tests or something. My dad just followed some of the no-sew ideas and made masks with them since they seem better than just cotton. He taped a flattened paperclip at the top to make the adjustable nose ridge and then folded pleats in it. Then stapled elastic/ribbon on the end - which also doubled as keeping the pleats pleated. Wears pretty decent and they boiled it in water for 5 minutes to disinfect and it held up. You can take out the paperclip to reuse in new ones too. I also found some cloth masks that were for sale. They supposedly come with one filter in it, but they're disposable. My plan is to take the shop towels (they gave me a full roll) and cut them to filter side to use them in the cloth masks when the arrive.

I made one this morning and used the flexible garden wire. It shapes around my nose quite nicely

My glasses fog up, I just try pushing the mask down a bit. Saw this tip from a friend whose wife works in the health care industry. Haven't tried it yet: For everyone with glasses wash them with shaving cream, rinse, and let dry. This keeps them from fogging up when your mask is on.

I really can't do decorator stuff, these will go to the local hospital and will need to be washable. So I am even double sewing seams to make them more durable.
But I had some cute colors, I ran out of binding tape, it works good. but I just happened to think, I bought a little machine a few years back that makes binding and never have used the thing. I have a cute pink flannel with ballet slippers, was for PJ's, has some yellow on it, so used pink elastic and yellow blanket binding. On another I had orange binding and orange elastic so put those on blue and white stripe. Then I have an abstract pattern of blue and white, used white elastic and navy till I ran out. Each spool it says has 6 yards, they all have 1 piece left over. Some I had were sewn together and had a pocket that was turned inside out and just pleated on those the backing was tshirt fabric, very soft. I am going to try and make at least 30, going to look for another design. I did the blue and white stripe thinking the others are to cutesy and a guy wouldn't want them. I'm going to look around and see if I can find some masculine fabric. I'm thinking I bought some army knit to make something for little guy. I have stacks and stacks of fabric. Like hubs said cabinets at least 7 ft tall, 4 of them 4 foot wide and 2 stacking shelves from Sam's all full of fabric.. I have been ready for the apocalypse for years, LOL! Honestly never thought stores would be closing down and going out of business and hard to find clothing in our area, what a surprise. If I can keep DD losing weight, I can sew for her. Now she can wear my shirts so that helps. I have tons of multi size patterns too, so no issue there. Of course she is short so very petitie, but that's ok. We have tons of clothes I can alter, long as I'm physically and mentally able to do it.

I see where our small hospital has tested 43 people, so I'm sure they are going through their supplies, with 25 beds, have to be very limited.

My astounding sister made and sent us 5 masks, with pockets to put a filter into. She put wire into the nose bridge that can be removed for washing.

Not sure what to expect. I am grateful though it was very thoughtful.

This thread is fun!
Decided to venture out for another 2 weeks of supplies (before the snow storm we are supposed to get tomorrow- oops, snow started early), and needed to MaCGyver some kind of mask. Borrowed a bandanna from DS5, and some hair elastics for the folded mask I'd seen on tv. Way too stifling to wear more than 30 seconds (cause it's approx 8 layers thick). So decided to just wear it bandit style like DH was. It kept slipping off my nose, and I was trying NOT to adjust it too much. Between the mask and the winter hat I had to revert to wearing, I'm amazed people in the store could recognize me!
A few shoppers were wearing masks, but not many, mostly older (despite local officials strongly recommending we all wear them to protect others).
Just saw that a County Exec signed an order that businesses couldn't refuse people wearing masks and gloves. Just amazing how far our thinking has come in a short amount of time - before we would have looked at individuals wearing masks and gloves as bank robbers, right?

Went to grocery, actually 2, and saw about half wearing masks but most people were very good about the 6 ft rule. Not a lot of people in store #1, but #2 was limiting how many people could go in.
Between the 2 stores got everything on my list except TP. Not real close to being out, but starting to think about it.
The mask I made was from DHs largest hankie. Folded in half diagonal and put a piece of shop towel in it. Then sewed 2 pleats in it and tied it around my neck cowboy style. My glasses kept it close to my face, and I tucked the bottom into the neck of my t shirt. Seemed to work OK, and I didn't suffocate to bad.
I did the best I could with what I have on hand. I've sewn most of my life, but I keep my supplies limited to what I'm working on. ........ except for thread LOL

We'll see when we get them I guess. Knitted fabric and a mask that has been knitted are not the same. You said "knitting" which means yard and needles are being used. But if she said they were making knitted masks - it could mean either knitting or fabric. I think all fabric is knitted, maybe?

Got the masks. They are sewn fabric but the elastic they used is wrong. It's super cheap really thin black elastic. DH put his on and it broke it couldn't even get around his ears. Mine is so big that I am better off wearing a scarf. The kids' fit fine those used fabric ties so that is something. I still appreciate the gesture but please if you are going to make masks make sure you are using sturdy materials. Also make sure they can fit people. DH is going to mow my grandma's lawn this weekend (no contact) and ask her if she has any elastic still in her sewing supplies. I need the type you use to make waistbands, if anyone has any she would. If not I'll search online. I can fix the masks if I have the material.

I just saw a tip on FB to cut up an ace bandage into strips to make the elastic from that.

DH and I are wearing cloth masks at all times when we leave the house. We get some weird looks, but not nearly as many as when we DIDN'T wear them. I went to the local mom & pop garden store for fertilizer and bird seed, and saw only one person without a mask, employees included. The unmasked shopper tried to cut the line (folks all 6' apart) and staff shouted him back to his place. They are only allowing 2 people in and he was in with me and again tried to crowd the cash register where I was but they shouted at him in English and Spanish to get back behind the tape line on the floor or he would have to leave. This local place is fed up with covidiots. Last week they removed a shopper who attacked an employee for asking him to observe the 6' distance. That fool is permanently banned from the store and his photo is posted on the register for all to see.
