exactly where the heck are we supposed to get them? Even the simple masks used by painters or by people with allergies mowing their lawns don't exist anywhere!

The recommendation is apparently for "face coverings," not necessarily manufactured medical or other types or face masks. Here's an item from the Washington Post that offers clarification. Face coverings recommendationSo, bandanas, do-it-yourself face masks, etc., are being recommended. With 24 hours, there will be thousands of patterns and pictures on Pinterest offering instructions in how to make stylish and practical face coverings from common household items (unpaid bills, slices of American cheese, the family cat). People will start businesses selling them. It could revitalize the economy. Seriously, it's not so much the need for full-on sterile protection but rather something to control the dissemination of aerosol droplets and slow the spread. At least this is something that is actually doable.

There's a huge population of bored to tears people that like to sew in our town cranking them out left and right. I have zero sewing skills, so if it comes to needing to wear masks I will purchase some from the crafty folks. They're getting all ingenious with them making little pockets in that sections from vaccuum bags slip into. The state university determined they make good filters.

I've seen some posts about dismantling HVAC filters on the higher range too. Not quite as good as if you can get a HEPA filter, but the filters on the higher end filter out a lot.

I belong to a facebook group that is sewing masks for people in my county. A coordinator keeps a record of who needs them and she posts her requests on FB. When she has enough responses, she lets us know. Right now there is a big demand for them from nursing homes and child care centers. There is a dropoff box at the library and we also drop them off on her front porch.
I began sewing them for my family and friends a couple of weeks ago. I have a big stash of quilting fabrics that meet the "100% cotton, tight weave" spec.
I haven't looked, but I'll bet there are already sellers on etsy.

At least this is something that is actually doable. This. I've read research that a homemade mask can control about 50% of the dissemination. That is 100% better than nothing. Since so many cases are spread by asymptomatic, wearing one protects others. Other countries have encouraged (in some cases required) everyone to wear them. Getting back to my sewing.....................

Make your own or buy a homemade one from someone. Save the sterile ones for the hospital workers that need them.

Ah, yes. That article is much more authoritative in a serif font. Silly me. What was I thinking?

I'm on my way back downstairs now. There are 10 done and I started back again, have 1 more done, 4 ready to put pleats in, 5 more to turn and stitch and 2 just cut. I think I will have the second 12 done tonight and 8 more cut out to make 30 total. And I am getting faster at making them. The nursing homes in town are asking for them. I have all kinds of soft tshirt material in white for a liner and flannel or cotton fabric for the cover. I made some feminine looking ones and some more masculine. It gives me something to do. Hubs said they probably won't use them. That's ok.
They also have the local prisoners sewing them. They are supplying hospitals here not sure where they are getting the fabric.

Yeah, yeah, they lined them with something (maybe junk mail, IDK), but still - CROCHET!

The My Pillow company is making large numbers. Yes, we’ve been depending on China too much for far too long Good to see US companies stepping up

I have a bunch of bandanna, I figure with a bandanna, dark glasses and a big hat I can just take whatever I want and no one will ever know it was me 🙂

DH and I were up early to go to a mask distribution for seniors, healthcare workers and people with compromised immune systems. The masks were donated by two local Chinese philanthropic groups and distributed by our local state rep and his wife. So many Asian people here, including the rep and wife who's a prominent TV reporter, have been the subject of revolting hate and threats. We felt very fortunate to get two masks to supplement the two cloth ones we were given by a close friend. There are no masks for purchase here

I'm considering seeing is my daughter will see some for us. I don't know what fabric we have around, but we probably have something (even if we sacrifice a pillowcase and a t-shirt.)

I gave my short hair neighbor two hair ties so she could make one. I have a hospital mask but will add to it. Probably paper towels.

If you have any of those disposable blue shop towels there was an article in business insider with someone that tested household products and found it works best as a filter. Buying them seems to be as hard as regular towels, but if you have some...
My parents fashioned masks using them and they held up to boiling in water for 5 mins to disinfect so you can probably use them a couple times before throwing away.

I had to look really hard, but finally found some 30 year old elastic in my sewing kit. I have fabric, so will look for a pattern tomorrow.
I probably will only wear them to the grocery store.

DH has asked for bandanas. Now he begins to take it more seriously? I think Walmart has some still. On the side of I must have completely lost my mind, I dropped $160 on a box of 120 fabric masks. And they aren't even arriving until after Easter. I completely feel like I've lost it. Seems like an epic waste of money.

I don’t know but Easter is almost here and NY is in big trouble, if we’re out by July that would be good
