jerseygirl Will Mexican petunias grow where you are? Deer and other critters don't like them, and they're perennials. Planted white gaura in front of the Mexican petunias for contrast. Another one that deer don't like and also a perennial. I get so impatient waiting for seeds to sprout, then get big enough to transplant. This morning I spied globe amaranth trying to poke through the dirt in a pot. Almost had to have a magnifying glass to see them but they're really there. Yippee. When they get big enough, they'll go in front of the gaura for more contrast and for a kind of tall, wispy bed. The edging for it is trufulla, that's already been put in from bedding plants and blooming. Weeding done in the peony/hydrangea bed and more blue star creeper plugged in. So. Much. Weeding. Ugh.

I need to pot some citronella and tropic cannas out by the pool . Also , just received the first box of three new solar tiki torches . All mine were wreaked . But it’s like 89 out right now and I can’t get myself to go out back yet .

Lawn mowed and treated for fungus. While I was sitting on my teeny tiny patio it occurred to me that keeping up the garden is a heckuva lotta work and that I don't like the work part, only the results. As soon as I win the lottery, I'm gonna hire somebody to do the work for me. It'll probably be a while, though, because it's necessary to buy a lottery ticket to win. I hate that.

Planted in that long bed and mulched it. Didn't do any other gardening because that wore me out even with son helping

Yabbut you got 'er done. Anymore, planting more than a couple of things plumb wears me out so I hear you. Three gaura this morning and I had to take an hour's break.

I’ve got a ton of tomato plants coming up from last years crop that overwintered. I think they’re all the cherry tomatoes that kept dropping off last year. I’ll wait until I get a couple that seem to be growing well and pull all the others out. I need to get more plants and flowers for my flower beds out front and the other end of the house. I want some milkweed, knockout roses, and flowers that are hummingbird friendly since they’re now returning to our area. I need to put out our hummingbird feeder too. My peas are getting big and I need to put up a fence for them to climb on. Then I need to plant some green bean seeds. It’s finally starting to consistently stay above 50 during the day with quite a few days in the 60’s and 70’s.

I was out early while it was still sunny and warm and tidied up the front yard as promised.
Our weather has gone from pleasant and sunny at 7 am to waiting for the level 2 weather event. Rain should be here within minutes; the wind has already started.
Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny but cold so it looks like I won't be doing anything much by way of gardening until Friday. Meanwhile, y'all carry on.

It's going to be a sunny day but cold and windy. No gardening today because it's too wet to do much anyway. I'll just sit inside and feel sorry for myself. oped Progress!

I ordered netting because there is no way they are going to mature before the bugs. This lower bed is shady for a good part of the day and so I'm hoping this helps them stay cool so they don't bolt too quickly. Also here is the perennial bed we planted earlier in the week. I need to power wash this wall. I did the back ones last week, but not this one up front.

It's probably too late but I planted my peas yesterday. They are getting quite the soaking today. We had a couple late frost warnings. And then my DH thinks it's a waste so I had to wait for him to be gone when it wasn't raining.
I used garden soil he mistakenly bought a couple years ago instead of potting soil.
My pansies look okay. I thought they would have got bigger but they are still alive and blooming.

Planted the things I got yesterday before the rain starts. The weather guesser said it was going to start in the early morning hours, but it’s almost 11 am and still no rain. We’re supposed to get more than 2 inches, but we’ll see. I put the red petunias in the front flower bed and will put out the hummingbird feeder tomorrow.

Trying to get an order for plants canceled. I ordered from Canada because I wasn't paying attention. I found what I wanted at Walmart for much cheaper so I grabbed them. We'll see if they respond to my email. Nothing has shipped so you'd think it would be easy to cancel and refund my money.
Otherwise I suppose lesson learned there.
I also bought a microgreen growing kit at Walmart. Pretty excited to try that out. I usually buy from the Farmer's Market but with the rate Nebraska and Iowa are going I am not attending. I saw the kit and decided to give it a try. Supposedly in 12 days I will have two little trays of microgreens.
Got Gwen a pineapple sage plant for her fairy garden. If we can keep that and the snapdragons alive I may have to have my brother help me uproot a spot in the backyard to make a bigger one.
Then we paid him $100 to dress up our front lawn. We used to have huge shrubs but took them out a long time ago. Weeds took their place and it looks terrible. He knows what to plant and is very good at gardening so we offered him $100 plus the cost of some plants to get that area of the yard looking better.

We broke up a deteriorated Talavera pot for the trash and moved another large pot from the side to the back deck. Tomorrow I'm headed to our local garden store for ant guards for the hummingbird feeders (if we don't use these the feeder is swarmed by ants 5 minutes after hanging and the hummies won't come near it). I'll also get 6 bags of topsoil to spread on areas of the front yard where the grass is thin. I'm hoping to find something that's full sun tolerant to plant in a large planter in the back, moss roses maybe. If this little store doesn't have anything suitable, I'll head to Home Depot early Sunday a.m. Sprayed some persistent weeds on the side. I found a gallon of Moon Juice liquid fertilizer lurking in the garage from tree planting 2-3 years ago so tomorrow and Saturday I'll mix up a solution and fertilize all my potted plants and the rose bush. Weather is supposed to be low 90's and humid

@donethat Check Home Depot's hours. Down here they've changed and not open until 8 on Sundays I think.
There's a cute flower in one of the beds called Ixia. This is the first year they've bloomed for me, and it looks like they close up at night and open again in the morning. There's a cluster of them but only one blooming so far.
It's going to be a beautiful day here in the 70s. Tomorrow and Sunday in the 80s. And the only thing there is to do in the garden is weed. Darned weeds. I'm tired of weeding, and it's a losing battle anyway.
Everybody in Georgia is now free to come and go except people over 65. Dammit. One of those times I wish I could be 15 years younger.

So only 30% chance of rain closer to evening now. It's pretty wet out there, but I think I'll get a few small things done out there anyway. Plant the half barrels and bins probably, maybe start the vine patch. I also need to run to a greenhouse that does no contact to grab some fertilizer for the flowers. Just trying to decide if I need anything else before I put in an order. Can't believe I forgot it before.

I really need to get the grandkids over hear to weed my flower beds and pull out a couple of overgrown bushes. DH said he’s gouging to trim them, but he just doesn’t have the time with all the home remodeling projects we have going on. With my bad knees I just can’t get down to weed and still get back up.
I did order my butcher block island countertop yesterday and it was less than I was expecting, only a little over $1k and I got free shipping!

Anne_in_VA I was going to ask you when you have time for gardening while doing all your kitchen stuff. It was a surprise to read about your tomato plants popping up. It's never happened with any tomatoes I've planted. Will tomatoes that have reseeded actually bear fruit?

If they are F1 hybrids, their offspring will be F2 and then its iffy.

missrigby, I don’t know if they’ll fruit or not, but I think I’ll let a couple grow to see if they do. DD said she’s going to take as many as I want to get rid of. I don’t think she realizes how many there are! With 7 kids though, she could probably take a bunch and if they fruit she can freeze the tomatoes. She has one of these big double door freezers and it holds a lot of food!
We didn’t get all the rain they predicted, only got .5 inch or so. Now I need to go water in the new plants.

A few days ago I mentioned that our peach tree didn't have any blossoms this year, and it just registered with me that the creeping phlox on a slope between our and our neighbor's yard didn't bloom either. What? It's growing and green and looking healthy. I wonder why no flowers.

Another lovely day in the neighborhood and now that morning has broken and I can see the garden, I'm still not feeling like puttering. This is a first. What's ailing me? Maybe just going out and doing a walk-around would wake up my gardening gene.
It's gonna be 80+ today.

None of my little baby plants have died yet. The lavender has some buds on it (is that what they’re called?) that will be flowers soon I guess.
Yesterday morning one of the peppermints was looking pitiful, by afternoon, so was the other. I watered them and their doting Dad (DBF) moved them to a spot on the deck that was still sunny. They’re normally in a spot that gets late afternoon shade. They perked back up.
It was really windy here for a couple of days, I guess maybe that made them dry out sooner than normal? Or does that sound stupid? That’s the only thing I can think of because it had only been a couple of days since they’d had water.
DBF is supposed to clean the flower bed out that I want to experiment with, tomorrow. It has scraggly, half dead shrubs in it right now. I want to plant roses somewhere, a tribute to my Grandma. I was thinking maybe I should try it there. Or should I try in a container first? She grew them in the ground, and in containers.
If any of you grow roses, I’m interested in any advice you’re willing to share.

If the peppermints are in pots they may need to be watered more often. I find that I need to water my potted plants that are outdoors need watering every other day at this time of year but will need watering more often during the summer, sometimes as much as 2x a day.

Herbs are doing well so far. Parsley still looks a little sad but hopefully with sun and regular watering it'll perk back up, it was the least crappy looking parsley plant at Wal-mart so I took my chances.
Gwen's fairy garden is looking good so far. Then I have tiny little shoots in my microgreen containers. I am pretty proud of that we'll see if in 12 days I have what the box promised. It'll be enough to add to a salad or two which will make me happy.
Maybe next year I'll try my hand at a bigger garden with my brother's help. If I keep it up with the herbs I'm going to have to, I am up to three pots worth.

High winds and low humidity can dry out a potted plant in less than one day, especially if it's in the sun so your idea is absolutely right. I don't know what kind of roses you want to grow but Knock Out roses are pretty much indestructible. They come in all sizes and colors and are so durable they plant them in the street medians here where they are blasted by heat, experience 18-19 degree winters, and are submerged under flood waters for days. Some of the smaller varieties do well in pots. Some gardeners turn up their noses at them but they are a lot easier to maintain than old-style floribunda and tea roses if you are a novice and don't want to spend your life pruning and spraying. www.knockoutroses.com/ They are widely available too.

@pinkcshmere I agree with @donethat about knockout roses. I didn't reply earlier because I thought you wanted info about traditional roses. Knockout roses are easy to grow, require very little maintenance, and bloom in abundance from early spring until late in the fall.
I have a bed with two dozen of them in pinks, reds, yellows. The yellow ones are cool because as the color fades, they're white roses.

I am so tired. Mr. tilled me a large space to put pumpkins, gourds, watermelon, etc. 22 varieties of vine-y plants and the soil was ok but not great so I made mounds out of the new topsoil/mushroom soil and then a ring of dill and calendula and marigolds around them... I planted a few zucchini plants in there and forgot the icicle radishes... have to add those yet, but otherwise they are all in. It was a ton of work and I'm not sure I'll get anything else done out there today. Well, watering. And its gorgeous and not windy so I'm swimming after I eat something and hydrate.

I’ve been seeing Knock Out roses. @missrigby said she thought I meant traditional roses vs Knock Out roses, can one of you tell me the difference? Besides the Knock Out roses seem easier to grow.
