Weeds! They have taken over my flower bed this year. Same here. I’m a master when it comes to growing Virginia Creeper and Bittersweet and wild roses. 😆 Same here as well, except for the wild roses. I've had 3 expensive rose bushes crap out on me this year. I am not happy about that. I am also very not happy with the fucking rabbits. I don't mind them in my yard because I have everything penned off or in containers. Or so I thought. Caught a rabbit in my bee balm bed yesterday. Had to haul ass out to chase it out. Bastard got in through a hole in a piece of lattice so had to cover that up. Whoever said rabbits don't eat bee balm is full of shit. Second year they've eaten them. Little fuckers.
Then I stabbed my thumb with a thorn from one of the dead rosebushes. Why do I do this to myself?

Harvested the first few tomatoes from the volunteers from last years crop. They are very sweet and I’m looking forward to more. I think I will freeze them for use next winter. My green beans are finally sprouting, but something is getting to them. I need to go plant more.

Good thing I watered in the fertilizer. The rain went everydamnwhere but here. Rain of biblical proportions all around the city except not in our neighborhood. And more rain tonight except not in our neighborhood. And more rain tomorrow except probably not in our neighborhood.
I should have been a meteorologist so I could get paid big bucks, be wrong most of the time, and not get fired.

Weeded but man it’s hot and supposed to get worse. We are getting more food from the garden at this point... the rain missed us too so I’ll have to water tomorrow. For now I think I’ll go swim.

I went out earlier. It was 73 with 95% humidity, damn should have been raining!!
I hoed and weeded over half the potatoes. I need to finish but wanted to get the bad before going back over the first part again. Then I weeded and did the final thinning of my beets. I did a bit on the strawberries, but about 2 hours is it and I'm pooped. The side of my little seat sank and I fell on my butt. The ground is soft right now so didn't hurt, LOL!
I hope tomorrow or the next day, I can finish the potatoes and weed the strawberries. Most has fabric but not the potatoes and it was getting bad. About a foot by 2 ft section by the strawberries have no fabric so I need to dig those out. I hope to weed and thin, carrots and the turnips for the last time.
My green beans are blooming so won't be long, lots of tomatoes out there.
My flowers are growing need to plant more in that row.
Before the week is out, weed onions, celery, cabbage, squash. But tomorrow pick squash and cukes. Donated some today at the food bank. I like eating cukes just peeled and salted, family only likes in salads. I need to fix some squash dishes. Fresh is so good.
I need to put the soap out on the trees for the deer.
But it gets really hot and will be hotter tomorrow.

Lowe's had the coolest vinca plants yesterday. They're dark, dark red...darker than burgundy, almost purple...with yellow centers. They begged me to take them home, and when it looked as if I'd pass them by after admiring them, they jumped right off their table and into my cart. What was I supposed to do? Nobody likes to be rejected. I've never had much luck with planting them in the garden, so they are now happily ensconced in a pot on DD's patio.
I gotta throw on my grubbies and water the flowers. We were promised rain yesterday, but it didn't materialize, of course. We're promised rain today. They lie.

Lawn mowed. It doesn't look mowed because between the mower blades needing to be sharpened and the AJC's former motto "Covers Dixie Like the Dew" it was still really too wet. The dew isn't dried up enough until around noon, and by then it would be too hot to mow. Anyway, it's done for another couple of days.

I can't win. Yesterday afternoon the sky got so dark that the street lights turned on. I swear it was darker than the inside of a cow's belly. I wanted to fertilize the lawn so figured I'd run out and do that before the rain started. It did not rain. Not a drop. It was late in the day, and I figured it would rain last night. Just because it was predicted didn't mean it would, and it didn't. This morning I checked the forecast, looked at the radar, saw a bright blue sky. Rain supposed to start around 1 or 2, but in the meantime a good six hours of sunshine on the fertilizer would be plenty of time to burn the grass so I trotted out there and watered in the fertilizer. The blue sky went away. It's now overcast and looks like it will stay that way until the rain starts. I could have saved myself the trouble of watering. Why me? I must have sinned in a former life. I feel like there's causation here somewhere.

Knee Deep in Water Chloe It's not nice to pick on old ladies I knew it was gonna happen. All winter long I was out digging up old dead tree roots, improving the soil, leveling the ground, trying to expand the area to plant more flowers. Like it wasn't already bigger than big. As the weather got warmer, I whined about how soon we'd have the last frost, how soon I could plant. Then I whined about how long it took for seeds to sprout, then whined because the flowers weren't blooming soon enough to suit me. I predicted that I'd be in heaven when the iris bloomed, the Oriental lilies bloomed, the whole garden would be in bloom at the same time. I also predicted that by early July, I'd be tired of weeding and deadheading and fertilizing and spraying for aphids and other pests and every other thing that was "just maintenance." It's early July. I've had enough. It's too darned hot out there to do anything even when I get started as soon as it's daylight. How soon can I start putting the garden to bed for the winter?

Early yesterday afternoon, I brought out the hose to hand water a couple areas of the garden where liatris corms are putting out greenery. Rain has been sparse af of late and little to none was expected the rest of the day yesterday or today.
Well since watering early yesterday, we had two thunderstorms storms yesterday and two today late this afternoon and now.
So all is well In the watering department.

This is a portion of our backyard. The walking path on the left doesn't drain well and consistently has mud puddles. I can't deal with it anymore. We're going to have it redone. I hope we don't have to remove too many of the plants.

I have some more peas. One pot may be done for. Of course it couldn't rain one stupid day while we were gone. We watered twice yesterday and got a good rain last night.
The basil has perked up considerably compared to yesterday. I need to split it in half. The flowers have perked up as well. I need to take the dead ones off today.
We have one tomato starting to grow.

My tomatoes are't putting out much yet. The peppers are... long way from being done, but at least producing. I managed to get a little broccoli today and kohlrabi but the rest of the spring stuff is ready to be pulled. I'll try to grow something quick before fall plantings are ready. I have plenty of yellow squash and zucchini ready and coming. I can see a few acorn squash and pumpkins and a lot of spaghetti squash to look forward to. Beets are still coming in strong. Lettuce and spinach are meh because its so hot. Will have to buys some. No watermelon yet but they take longer. Carrots and parsnips came up thin, might need to add some seed. But at least I didn't have to thin them

We have someone coming to look at it later this week. Last time we had someone look at it, they wanted $14,000 to redo the whole thing.

I have a plan for this morning. Never mind that "best laid plans" crap. First, start clearing out the pine island in front where the iris bulbs are going to be planted. Next, order a crap ton of garden soil from Home Depot and pick it up.
By the time that's done, it will be too hot to dig in the soil so that will get done tomorrow. Maybe.

I ordered the garden soil online and had no sooner hit submit than I got an email and a text saying it was ready for pickup. I did that first, then came in and started raking up the old pine straw. It was a bigger job than I expected so it's not even half done. Had to give it up for the day because it's too hot. 84 and heat index at 90? Yup. Too hot even if I were younger. Tomorrow's another day.

I finally planted seeds inside for fall planting... eeek fall will be late as well. I am not on time at all this year and while I had an excuse for spring I really don't here... oh well. What I get I get.
I am currently getting lots of zucchini and yellow squash and beets as I have said elsewhere in the threads. There is a good bit of spaghetti squash, pumpkins, acorn squash, watermelons, on the vine growing for fall, but the deer have gotten 2 so today I'm going to put up some of my glass chimes in that bed and hope maybe it scares them away? Mr just says they have to eat too and we can always but more but if that's the point then i'm not going to bother weeding...
Tomatoes on but not near red yet. Peppers on but I won't eat them green. My flowers are so lovely. I never had starter perennials take so well their first year... maybe I can take some pics later.
Its cooler today and very overcast with a breeze so I didn't water but it needs to rain...

We're supposed to be in the 94-96 range next week vs. 98-100 this week so I plan to get in some weeding and clear out the veggie bed so I can plant collards and Swiss chard at the end of August.
I'm offering online help to my yoga instructor who is planting her first garden in Texas. She contacted me after she planted stuff that said "full sun" in the sun and it died. I explained that Texas sun in July and August is not full sun, it's a nuclear blast.

I was out cleaning up the pine island at 7 am. You read that right. 7 am. Did as much as I could before the sun got to me, but all the old pine straw is raked up and stuffed into those big contractor-quality trash sacks. I dunno...maybe 40 gallon sacks. There are nine of them. Ack! That's a lotta pine straw. I wanted to spread garden soil, too, so that it could be dug in tomorrow, but I learned my lesson yesterday. Two 20-oz bottles of Gatorade and two 20-oz thermal mugs of water later... Tomorrow is another day. Another hot day. Another early morning pretending I know what I'm doing in the garden ETA: I did tidy up in the flower garden before giving it up. Just so y'all know that it isn't being neglected.

Where the heck is everybody? Don't tell me that the heat has scared everybody else indoors and your flowers and veggies have just been left to fend for themselves.
It was 80 when I got up at 5 am. Yeah. I went out and spread 10 sacks of garden soil, came in and ordered five more for curbside pickup, fetched them, brought them home and spread them, too. That part is done. Yay.
A few days ago I cut down some branches that were hanging over where I was working because (1) it freaks me thinking about ticks sensing any warm blooded animal and leaping from the branches onto me, and (2) they make too much shade where I want the flowers to grow.
Tomorrow morning I need to cut up and bundle them to put out for the trash guys to take on Monday morning. And there's one more branch I couldn't get all by myself so need DD's help. Um. She's doesn't get up at 5 am to beat the heat so I'll save it for last.

I am not going out much, honestly. I water and pick what is ready and weed a little if possible, but it is hot out there! I did take some pics yesterday... let me find them.

I think the rabbits are eating my cabbage, its ok, I planted way to many. brought in one for us and threw 4 away, durn, could have given them away, if not eaten. won't be to long till the onions are ready to pull and tie up.
I picked peppers, cukes, and squash, got my first patty pan squash of the year. I pulled a few turnips but they are not ready yet. Will go to an old friend of hubs. I cut celery, the smell is awesome. I'm sure I have more beans to pick, not today, to hot out there I lasted an hour.
I picked a few tomatoes but they are so full the plants are pulling over the tops of the cages and the tomatoes are getting sun scald. The ones inside plants will be fine and I will pick some when they start turning red.
I came in to cool down, sitting in the living room with the ceiling fans on.
I'm going to put some squash and cukes out by the road and put on facebook, help yourself, not make pickles or relish this year, have enough for winter I think and some is from 2018 so need to use it.
I got quite a bit done in the short time out there.
I have strawberries that keep blooming and sitting on, never get any, quessing squirrels or rabbits.
