My Carolina Reaper plants are FINALLY developing little teeny blossoms. Anaheim and cayenne plants have been producing peppers for awhile now. I'm happy.

And they produce like crazy. He "carries over" a few from season to season. Have you tried growing tabasco peppers?

You're gonna have to let us know how hot those are. Everything I've seen says they are ridiculously hot. I grow my own jalapeños, chili and cayenne peppers, but I'm afraid to try anything hotter.

I decided to make another attempt to start sunflowers from seed. As I was putting them in I noticed sunflower shells there where I had planted before. So it has been the squirrels eating my seeds. I have a fence around the garden but they climb over. I added netting today hoping they will germinate this time.

I don’t even know why I keep watering my tomato plants, I’m over them. 2 of the 4 plants are obviously not healthy anymore. Mister said they got rabies from the squirrels lol.
I don’t even care to try to figure out what’s wrong and whether or not I can *fix* them. Today, I have more tomatoes that squirrels got to than tomatoes that are okay. I am thoroughly disgusted.
I asked Mister to get wire screens to protect the plants, but he hasn’t. I feel like I’ve done all the research to try to grow them and all the work, except for asking him to water them on the mornings he’s off work, so he could at least figure out the screening if he wants me to keep trying to grow vegetables.
Now when I look at the plants, I think “Nasty” because every single day, there are more tomatoes that squirrels have been eating on.
As excited as I was about my tomatoes, I’m over it now. I’m not trying to grow another darn thing unless I have an enclosed garden to keep critters out. If I knew how to build one myself, I would. But I don’t know the first thing about cutting wood and building stuff, I’ve never even used a drill. I’m willing to learn how to do all that and build stuff, but I need someone to teach me.

We grew reapers in the past, and they are crazy hot. And we like hot. We ended up drying them in the dehydrator and using the food processor to make a powder that we add to dishes for a some kick. A VERY little goes a very long way.

I empathize, @pinkcshmere. I haven't tried tomatoes in 15 years due to the squirrels. And I really enjoy tomatoes.

We also have battled the squirrels eating our tomatoes. Typically they are uninterested until just about the time of ripening. My solution has been to throw a garden net over the plants. These nets are found at garden centers for keeping birds off berry plants I believe. We also have a birdbath close by and the squirrels drink out of that to stay hydrated instead of seeking out tomato juice. There is an instagram #squirrelsareassholes that is hysterical to look at.

I use netting over some of my sunflowers to keep the birds off. I've never had a problem with squirrels.

I'm battling Japanese beetles. They moved into the area a few years ago and are now a real problem.
If I see them.I remove and smash. Next year I'm going to try to plant some flowers that repeal them.
I'm frustrated because everything that can get rid of them also kills bees and I'm not doing that.
But then my plants suffer and these invasive bastards continue to thrive.
I'm going to see if I can.find that natural bug killer they advertise on TV. I want it for flies in the house.
Maybe it'll work on the beetles. I can target individually and hopefully not take down any bees.
The bees like my catnip bushes. I've seen a lot of bubbles..
Finally saw a hummingbird too. They like my purple petunias. I had no idea they were in the area. I'll get some more bird friendly plants next year to try to attract more.

One of my neighbors down the road put out 3 Japanese beetle traps. That took care of the beetles for me. They are all over at the neighbor's.

I read that the traps will attract the beetles from as far as 5 miles so it's best not to use them.
If you don't have a lot of plants to cover, I take a container like an old coffee can and put in a few ounces of oil (can be old car oil or cooking oil) and a few inches of water. Then I walk around the garden and using a finger knock them into the mixture. They can't get out.

I got some yards I need to scout.😆

But where do they stop on the way to the trap? Might feast on your plants first.

This tuberose stalk is looking mighty interesting. I don’t want to talk about my tomatoes.

Despite the heat and humidity I stuck it out and weeded and trimmed the raised beds. Picked a whole bucket of tomatoes and one zucchini- dug up one potato pot and was disappointed in the haul- I can’t figure out what potatoes like.
Got sunburned and smell bad. Isn’t gardening 🤩

I just realized our mums are full of buds. This is the time to cut them back to get more bushy and flower in the Fall.

My tiger lillies have flowers! I can see them from my bedroom window. I’m going to take a walk to get a closer look later. Right now, the grass is wet because it FINALLY rained! I woke up in the middle of the night and was happy to hear it raining. I got out of bed and looked out the window. The wind was blowing hard and the branches on the big pecan tree in the backyard were moving around a lot, and that looked kinda scary at night, so I closed the blinds and got back in bed lol.
We really needed some rain. Vegetation has been suffering with all the extreme heat we’ve had for some weeks now, and no rain. A lot of grass in the area has turned yellow instead of green.

Don't try picking the daylilys to put in a nice vase. They don't last, and wilt right away.

Although when I had a yard full of old fashioned daylilies I would pick flowers and "float" them in a glass bowl. But had so many blooming that I just changed out floaters every day.

There’s a reason I don’t try to grow flowers inside, I’m actually very allergic to flowers lol. So no worries about me bringing cut flowers in the house period.
The only exception is Mister’s Jasmine plant I got for him because he loves the scent of Jasmine. It’s not blooming, and when it does, I’ll just have to figure out then how to keep it from killing me lol.
I was warned that tiger lillies produce a LOT of pollen, which is why l planted them far from the deck, where I spend a lot of time. That means I can’t ooh and aah over them up close unless I walk across the yard, but that’s okay with me. I can see them out of my bedroom window though, which is nice.

Threw a tee-shirt into the washing machine because I had brushed against some of the lily pollen which got on part of the shirt. Stain still there on the shirt after wash and dry. Poured bleach on the stains then back into the washer. Stains gone. So wear an old white tee-shirt around the lilies and if you get pollen on them, pre-soak in bleaçh.

I said I was going to look at my tiger lillies today. I lied. There was a big snake on the deck today, so once again, my plants are on their own for a while.

I found lemongrass! I got it at the farm stand we frequent. Now I need to figure out where to plant it. I can finally make those lemongrass beef skewers in my Drew Barrymore cookbook.

It spreads so I grew it in a big planter. It was prolific. So being in container as opposed to being in ground wasn’t a problem. But admit it’s been some time since growing it. Have a local source now.

It says it's not a perennial where it gets below 20 degrees in winter. So I am thinking put it in a little planter and use as much as I can for cooking before winter.
The only one I plan on trying to bring in for the winter is my bee balm plant. I am quite proud of that plant.
