@pinkcshmere
Here's a potato video I watched this morning. It's really harvesting but she did touch on how she planted them.

My peach tree split this week from the weight of the fruit. I'm really upset. I picked over a 5 gallon bucket of green peaches off of other branches in hopes of saving the tree from further branch splits. I need to get my apple trees thinned so they don't split either. I worked on that a little bit today but didn't get that much done. The apricots are starting to ripen. I hope they taste good and are edible (no bugs, worms etc)

Do green peaches ripen on their own or are those a total loss? Very sorry. Ripe peaches are my favorite fruit.

Some say picked peaches don't ripen AT ALL. They just get softer after picking, but not riper. They're not tomatoes or bananas. Unlike some other fruits, peaches will not develop a sweet, juicy flavor after they’re picked from the tree. (The sticky natural sugar is the reason why fresh peaches make the best desserts.) So, once an unripe peach has been picked and transported to a grocery store, it will never live up to your expectations. That unripe peach might also feel hard and stringy or soft and mealy when you bite into it. www.tasteofhome.com/article/are-you-making-this-mistake-with-peaches/

That's sad. I hope you are able to thin the fruit enough the tree does well for the rest of growing season.

I bought a Zanzibar Gem plant last fall on the advice of a neighbour. "You can't kill it". She told me it would explode with new growth in the spring. April, May, June......nothing. Now in July it's growing before my very eyes. Every morning I wake up and there are new shoots 4 inches high.

Thank you cooper88 for sharing the video! I did watch it. It seems I’m doing the right thing taking my tomatoes in the house to finish ripening once they are orange. I have to take some inside almost every day now. This morning I saw that something bit a chunk out of one of the lower ones on a plant. I have about 4 that I’ll take inside today. I already have 7 or 8 inside. When I was watering them this morning, I saw that one plant does have a new baby tomato. Yay!

The hilarious thing is that I specifically used the word “orange “ in the original post, just like I did in the edit. Autocorrect must have jokes!🤣🤣🤣

Stupid squirrels are feasting on my tomatoes! They bit chunks off about 10 tomatoes since yesterday. I need advice on how to deter them.

I read that they don’t like strong smells. I have peppermint essential oil, which was mentioned in a few articles I read and I also have some cinnamon essential oil. I mixed the peppermint with some vinegar and hot sauce and sprayed it on the deck around each plant. I was careful not to get it on the growbags or plants, and they are all in plastic saucers, so they won’t absorb any of it from the deck boards. That was what I could do right now, with stuff I already have around the house. Y’all know how proud I’ve been of my tomatoes. Seeing the damage today really upset my nerves.

These are sold by Amazon but other retailers sell them too. I bought a different type but I place them on the kitchen counters to keep the cats off of them. Amazon outdoor/garden scat mats

Won't that hurt an unsuspecting cat? My tomato plants are on my elevated deck and there is a chain link fence closing in a small area around the deck. No unsuspecting cat has any business being on my deck. And if a stray cat ends up on my deck, it’s not my fault, but the fault of whoever made decisions that led to the cat being a stray. I know you are an animal lover, but there is only so far I am willing to go with letting animals do what they do around my home. I am considering doing something (idk what yet) with the base of the big tree in our back yard to discourage squirrels from climbing it. That is how they get onto our roof. Besides me not wanting them to keep messing with my tomatoes, there are signs in our attic (droppings) that I just learned about last week, that means a squirrel or squirrels are hanging out in our attic. The tree is easy access. If squirrels ate bugs instead of my tomatoes, I might not mind them as much. But even besides my tomatoes, I know they can damage a house with their chewing. I am not okay with that. I will try to deter them without harming them. But honestly, to me, they are enough of a nuisance that I really don’t care if they live or die.

@pinkcshmere - it's not the base of the tree which is the problem. It's the tree's branches which are hanging over the roof and maybe even resting on it. Have a tree trimming company cut back any branches close to the roof. And squirrels are good at jumping from tree branches to roof and vice versa.

I absolutely love my squirrels, both grey and fox, IN THE YARD. Those little shits are not welcome in my attic, no way, no time, no how. They will chew the insulation off your AC ductwork and off your electrical wiring. Squirrels are why we have heavy duty screening on our soffit vents, not window screen stuff. They have really great teeth and will chew through all the lightweight stuff

I was thinking in terms of discouraging them from climbing the tree in the first place. We had the an arborist trim the tree a few months after we moved here. There aren’t any limbs resting on the roof anymore, but it’s my understanding that squirrels are akin to acrobats and the tree limbs are close enough for them to jump onto the roof again. I also noticed last week that a tree on the side of our house probably needs to be trimmed back, away from our roof. We’re not sure if that tree is ours or our next door neighbor’s though. Not Mr. and Mrs. T, the neighbors on the other side of our house, whose back yard backs up to our property. They have a LOT of trees in their backyard. I guess we need to go over and ask if they know whose it is before we get it trimmed.

They have really great teeth and will chew through all the lightweight stuff We had what seemed like a million squirrels when we first moved here. Until Mister brought OG home from his parent’s house. Dogs seem to be a good deterrent for squirrels. We still have Newbie who has a strong prey drey and chases anything small, but since she lives in the house, she’s not always out there to chase rodents away. I didn’t get really bothered about the 3 tomatoes yesterday, but I’m kind of pitiful about all the ones they got to today. I don’t even want to get them off the plants, I asked Mister to do it for me. Years ago, when I lived in my Grandmother’s other house, squirrels got in the attic and chewed through the wiring for my alarm system. I came home from work and couldn’t turn the alarm off. The guy that came to fix the alarm insisted that it looked like the wires had been cut. The house was in the ‘hood, but I didn’t have anything going on that someone would go through the trouble of sneaking into the attic and cutting the wires for the alarm. It was squirrels.

Anything hanging over your property where the trunk is in your neighbor's yard (for example) you have the right to trim it back to the property line. Also, any shrubs next to the house which are tall enough to give an animal a safe path to the roof should be trimmed back. As for what you could around the base of the tree, if you know anyone in the pest control business, ask them what the might suggest.

The problem is we don’t know exactly where the property line is lol. Even if it’s their tree and we have the right to trim it away from our house, I think it’s courteous to talk them before we do anything, in the spirit of trying to be a good neighbor.

Squirrels were the reason I gave up trying to grow tomatoes in Maryland years ago. Early on I found I had no harvest at all. )(%#*@%()(*&^$ squirrels. They also invaded the attic and I had to clean up a prodigious mess plus install the heavy duty wire screening soupandstew described.

Squirrels can jump over 15' and aren't afraid of where they land.
