Yes, it has buds. They just haven’t opened yet, I guess. PC - have you seen the brown bulblets growing on the junction of the stem(s) and leaves? If yes, either collect and scatter them in a new garden bed or let them fall where they may in their current bed. Those are your future bulbs. Idk if there are bulblets yet. I’ll have to get Newbie to escort me over there again for me to get a closer look, and I will report back. If there are any, I’ll just let them fall where they are.

I went ahead and brought most of my orange tomatoes inside. Seeing the squirrel on the roof next to the deck this morning made me wary. I have a total of 10 tomatoes inside now, in varying stages of just turning orange, to almost ripe. I’ve been meaning to ask, Tennesseer, do you like tomatoes? If so, you get first dibs on the ones I’ll give away.

Argh. We are having a heck of a time figuring out the sprinklers at our new house--both their range and how to set the timers. I think I've now lost four potted plants due to us not being here more than three consecutive days and not understanding how the stinking sprinklers work!
On the other hand, there are more of the flowers that came with the property about to bloom. I'm excited to see what they are.

Mister randomly said yesterday that he might buy a tiller. For what?! I’m trying to ease myself into growing vegetables, and he’s talking about buying a toy. Let’s do something first with these frames for raised beds sir! I am not trying to do anything yet that would justify a tiller. I’m still half scared to even go in our backyard!
I told him that when we grow anything else, we’re going to have to figure out some automatic watering systems or something, because trying to keep these tomato plants watered appropriately is getting to be somewhat of a task for me, with this hot ass weather. I only have 4 tomato plants and watering them is convenient since they’re on the deck. I can’t imagine trying to water a bunch of new stuff in the yard manually, every day.
I took 2 of the Better Boy tomatoes to work today and gave them away. They were ripe, and I’ve been slacking on my plans to use tomatoes, so I preferred giving them away over just letting them sit in my kitchen.
This evening, I asked Mister to taste one of the Better Boys. He sliced it and sprinkled it with a little salt and pepper. When he tasted it, he said ooohhhh, it’s sweet! And he got some more stuff to sprinkle on it, and ate the whole thing. I tasted it with just the salt and pepper, then he insisted I taste it again after he sprinkled more stuff on it. It tasted good, but I still don’t see myself eating tomatoes by themselves. I like the taste, I guess I don’t like the texture or something. I always get tomatoes on my sandwiches, but if they’re sliced too thick, I take them off. Mister said several times that it was really good, while he was devouring all the slices lol.

I don't really like raw tomatoes either, just due to texture. I still grow them. DH loves them, and we cook with them a lot.
I found a zucchini today that had been hiding and it was huge. I went ahead and shredded it and that one zucchini made two loaves of zucchini bread. It was delicious.

Try eating a caprese salad with sliced fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and a dash of salt and a splash of olive oil. Quite tastey.

I had one big tomato on the vine, nowhere near ripe and I didn't want to bring it indoors to ripen- I was afraid it would end up tasting like one of those "tomato-like" things in the grocery store that are picked green and trucked from halfway across the country. I found half of it lying on the ground yesterday. A critter ate the other half.

Cheapest would be a soaker hose. It is basically a hose with teeny tiny holes that you lay where you want watered and it does the work.

Cheapest would be a soaker hose. It is basically a hose with teeny tiny holes that you lay where you want watered and it does the work. I did not have luck with the soaker hose, for some reason. Hardly any water made it out of the end, and when I tried to increase the water pressure it tore the hose up. (We have way too much water pressure in the yard faucet. I use an above ground irrigation garden sprinkler system from Amazon - I have eight foot long spray heads you stick into each area you want watered and then cut the hose from the kit into lengths that fit between each head. Then connect the end to a regular hose. The advantage of this kind over a soaker hose is it’s easier for me to visually check to see that the raised bed furthest from the faucet is getting water too. Although what I really need to do to make it more even is run the hose into the middle of the beds and run two off the middle. I might fix that this weekend. I saw a guy outside of Atlanta who had hundreds of micro spray irrigation drips that he had placed, one for every single plant in his big garden. All the lines fed back into his irrigation shed where timers turned each line on for ten minutes a day (unless the rain gauge told it not too) - very elaborate and probably took years to install but his garden was magnificent.

My non-expert opinion - that's some kind of lily. Fun to explore your new gardens with you. My tomatoes are just now flowering. I'm in StL so well into the growing season, I just planted them late. My neighbors are eying them because they have standing permission to pick them. I planted six plants. I had so many volunteer plants come up this year because we got behind on picking ripe ones last year. So many that I kept thinning them so we have room to move around and pick them. Last count I had 11 plants including 3 I've let grow outside of the raised beds. My neighbors are teasing me about the random ones. Last July there were weeks when was just too hot to be outside for very long, so it was a jungle out there. This article has some good info about propagating lilies (ie helping them spread). I had no idea there were so many methods. I separated several bulb clumps last fall and placed them in brand new areas. My one gardening neighbor and I have been impressed how large the new clumps are already. gardenerscott.com/gardenerscott-blog/how-to-propagate-lilies

Agree. Looks like some sort of daylilly. The leaves look thinner than mine, so probably a different variety. Most of mine bloomed a couple weeks ago. I'll trim them back when I get the chance and they will bloom again for me.

I’m excited that my first thought after looking at Knee Deep in Water Chloe’s picture was that it looked like daylilies, and other posters said the same. I’m excited because, just a couple years ago, I could not identify any flowers except roses, and they had to actually have rose blooms for me to know what it was lol. I am learning! And I am very proud of myself for doing so. Even though there are still a LOT of plants and flowers I still can’t identify lol. Now, back to reading the thread for me….

I found half of it lying on the ground yesterday. A critter ate the other half. A squirrel got to Mister’s Mom’s only tomato too. Even though I did see a squirrel on my roof eyeing my tomatoes (it might not have been eyeing them for real, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it! ) I haven’t seen signs that critters are actually messing with the plants. But then I have a lot of tomatoes on my plants, so I might not notice one or 2 missing. I have started taking the almost ripe ones inside though, to avoid critters getting them. I have about 8 more that are turning orange now, that I’ll take inside over the next couple of days.

I think I will let Mister figure out the irrigation stuff for whatever we grow next. I already have enough stuff I’m trying to learn about growing vegetables. He can at least figure that part out. We talked a little about what else we’d like to grow. We use a lot of onions and potatoes, so those are definitely on the list. Carrots, spinach and other leafy greens would be nice too. I don’t know anything about growing any of those, so I have a lot of research to do. And I’ll probably be asking y’all millions of other questions. If you want to head off some of my potential questions, please feel free to share opinions and advice.

Potatoes are super simple to grow! Seriously just take one of the raw potatoes that you didn't eat quite in time and put it in the ground! My mother used to do a whole thing with building mounds, but we've not done that.

I've also used "past their prime" potatoes to grow new ones. They are super easy to grow. I just don't grow a lot of them because potatoes at the store are so cheap and my limited room goes towards other stuff. But nothing tastes like a really fresh potato!

Any way they are cooked, I like them. I don’t think I’ve ever had a fresh one from a garden though. I really want to grow some now. I am kind of missing my treasure hunts. My tomato plants haven’t had any new babies since it got so hot. I enjoy watching the green ones turn colors as they get ripe, but that’s not quite as much fun as discovering new babies every day. The forecast still does not have any days where it won’t be in the 90’s. If it ever cools off for a few days, they will start making tomato babies again, right?

I found a trellis and I'm going to try to train the cucumber plant to crawl up it.
It's trying to hog the bed and it's trying to make its way down into the other two.
So upward you go.
I think I might have one Holy Basil or it's a really weird weed. We'll see as it gets bigger.
The lemon balm and camomile did not grow.
I think my pepper plant got too much water this last storm. It's leaves are droopy but the stem is green and three peppers have appeared so I'm crossing my fingers.
The tomato plant exploded. The radishes are going nuts and so are the carrots. Sweet potatoes plant is healthy.
I finally figured out what the little random plants are. They are lettuce! Seeds must have floated around after that bad storm and rooted where they fell.
So that's exciting I'll get lettuce at least from this exercise.
Not sure about my wax beans. The plants are growing but no bean yet.

I’ve got four ambrosia cantaloupes of various size. Maybe more, when they’re little they hide under the leaves. Many many green tomatoes on the tomato bushes, some very large, but green green green. Finally found one big one turning into a greenish yellow hue - what’s going to happen is they’ll turn red overnight and I’ll be inundated with too many tomatoes to eat. Have to give some away I guess.
The squash and zucchini aren’t doing as well. Squash especially looks peaked and the leaves have Powderly white circles on the leaves. I may have to pull those out and put in a late season cucumber
