I just realized why one tomato plant is so short and stubby. The tag says "dwarf variety". Oh duh, should have read the tag I guess. At least the tomatoes are tasty. Next year I'll get three of those little guys. I hate to admit how many years of gardening went by before I read the tags and researched the difference between determinate and indeterminate tomatoes plants!

crazycat Every year? What? Snapdragons are perennials. Unless you live in the frozen north, then maybe not.

crazycat Mine usually make it for a few years before giving up the ghost. I had them in pots but really wanted a bed of them so transplanted them all today, about two dozen. If they look like they're struggling, I'll move them back to the pots.

I usually pot them , most of everything else in my gardens tend to be drought resistant , natives , succulents , and tropical kinds of plants . I love to garden but some days my depression gets the better of me and I can’t keep up with their care so I tend to have easy care types . Also plants that can handle the heat we get 🌞

Hm. When I get really down, I try to make myself at least take a walk around the garden because I'll spy flowers that need to be deadheaded or weeds that beg to be dug up. Sometimes I'll get involved enough in doing just small things out there that it helps for as long as those chores take. When there's something to plant or something that needs to be transplanted that takes up more time and makes me feel 100% better while I'm working on it. Only problem is that I don't have the stamina to keep it up for more than a couple of hours. When I stop for a break chances are that I'll give it up for the day. Then the black cloud of gloom descends. I'm thinking hard about getting up bright and early tomorrow to truck on over to the garden center when it opens at 6. There will be a few construction crews on the other end of the store but only me and the flowers in the garden center. We can bond and it'll give me something to do when I get home. There are still plenty of spots in the garden that could be turned into beds, and I had the same bright idea last Monday morning. There wasn't a single plant there that wanted to go home with me

I usually try to wait until Wednesday morning so they have them all out and priced but not out so long that they get picked over or depleted. Just thought. Not sure about Lowe's since I don't buy a lot from them on a regular basis. There is a small local nursery just down the street from Lowes and my car has a tendency to head that way.

According to one of the garden department managers here they used to get trucks every night. That's probably changed, but I'm thinking they had at least one during the weekend. By 6 am tomorrow morning, I'll probably have changed my mind about going. I really do need garden soil even if no bedding plants, because there are about a dozen allium that need to be moved to get a whole lot more sun.

Deer ate the top shoots of 2 bleeding heart plants I’ve had for 15 years without a problem. Put some fallen branches over them to maybe stop deer. My redbud sapling isn’t getting leaves so probably dead. But a peony has buds! I put a wire cage around it to protect from deer. Had peony for 4 years with no flowers. So excited if it blooms! Will call garden center tomorrow to ask about planting a red Japanese maple

Grrr. I tried to order garden soil and potting soil online for curbside pickup. The website says my gift card # doesn't appear to be valid. BS. Since I'd have to drive over there to pick it up anyway, I'll just go and get the darned stuff.
ETA: Never mind. I made it work. Just waiting on the text to tell me to pick up. Fine.

Picked it up, easy peasy. But after being outside for a little bit, I've decided it's too cold today. Tomorrow will be mid-70s, much better.

Paid a college kid to move all of the dirt from our old garden beds to our new ones. Money well spent. Today's high 50 degrees which is ridiculous for mid-May in StL. Hoping this is the very last week. Wanting to plant more things!

To chilly here to work out in the garden but I do need to go check my peas. They had flowers a couple of days ago so I want to see if they set pods. I was at the dollar store today and found some led garden stakes. Two are flowers and one is a flower with a hummingbird hovering over it. I need to put those outside with the others I’ve gotten in the past year. They look so pretty at night with the glow they give out!

The flowers have been watered. There were some that needed to be planted, some moved to a spot more to their liking, some weeds pulled, and now I'm too tired to do the rest of it. Tomorrow is another day.

No gardening today. It’s sunny but really cook here and will warmup later this week so I’ll get out there then.

The lawn finally got mowed and the iris that are done got cut back. That's the sum total of today's gardening effort. I just don't feel it anymore. DD insists it's just because of the virus/trump trauma, but I really think I've gotten to a point where it's too much work. Maybe I'll feel differently when it's in full bloom about mid-June. So far, it ain't looking like it, though.

Planted crown of thorns and balloon flowers, moved some allium. It's hot out there, and I'm tired.

DD came over today with middle DGS and they dug up quite a few of the volunteer tomato plants. I was happy to get rid of them as I hate getting rid of perfectly good plants.

Planted lavender. Watered. Dug in Epsom salt around the impatiens. Puttered. I'm done for the day.

Weeded. Spread mulch. Weed whacked. Weeded more, and another bag of mulch. Overcome by inferno that is the outdoors. Came in to have lunch: 1/2 bagel with cream cheese, olives and fresh mozzarella on the side. I'm done for the day.

What is wrong with me? When I sit outside with a cup of coffee in the early morning, I make a plan about what to do in the garden. By the time I get my butt in gear, the plan sounds too daunting so what gets done is almost nothing except making sure that the flowers are watered. It's either covidepression or I'm burned out on gardening.

I finally dug out the planters I've had stashed in my basement for years. Do I even try to use these seeds: basil/oregano/chives, strawberries, flowers?

Lizard Queen How old are the seeds? The back of the packet should have a date at the top telling you the "packed for" year. If they're last year's seeds, maybe. Older than that? Buy new seeds.

Um. It would be a lot of work to plant and water and have nothing happen. It would be interesting to plant and water and have something to harvest! I wonder if the flowers would sprout?

Even if the seeds were new, I'd probably have nothing happen--story of my life! Getting these things set up seems like half the battle, so I was thinking of trying it out as is, and then it will be easier to add new seeds later on. I just need this stuff out of my basement!

As I've said before, DH loved roses. Some of his are in containers. But several are in the front of the house. I think they are knock-out roses because they grow almost in bouquets. I never do anything to them, and they produce tons of these bouquets.
However, they always get covered with two invasive vines. One is smilax. The other has thorns as well, but its leaves are more notched. Anyway, you can never completely cut it out because three sets of thorns are grabbing onto each other . . . and your gloves.
I got a lot of it out, though. A whole wheelbarrow full. A few roses sacrificed their lives as collateral damage, but overall it was worth the (hot, sweaty) effort.
DH would be proud. Next year if I prune the roses, maybe I can get more toward the roots.

Buy new seeds. 4 years is viable for many seeds. Plant more and thin if necessary. Almost all the seed I’m using this year was 2016. Almost everything has germinated at some rate.
