A commercial aircraft carrying 80 tons of gloves, masks, gowns and other medical supplies from Shanghai touched down in New York on Sunday, the first of 22 scheduled flights that White House officials say will funnel much-needed goods to the United States by early April as it battles the world’s largest coronavirus outbreak. The plane delivered 130,000 N95 masks, 1.8 million face masks and gowns, 10 million gloves and thousands of thermometers for distribution to New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, said Lizzie Litzow, a spokeswoman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Ms. Litzow said that flights would be arriving in Chicago on Monday and in Ohio on Tuesday, and that supplies would be sent from there to other states using private-sector distribution networks. While the goods that arrived in New York on Sunday will be welcomed by hospitals and health care workers — some of whom have resorted to rationing protective gear or using homemade supplies — they represent just a tiny portion of what American hospitals need. The Department of Health and Human Services has estimated that the United States will require 3.5 billion masks if the pandemic lasts a year. www.nytimes.com/2020/03/29/business/economy/coronavirus-china-supplies.html?fbclid=IwAR07wLmx90bAZu4Y4atVSkVl-YD5yJR8cM8n6YP13K_RsKuf7gXh7afLSG8In a related story: The national stockpile is a fuster cluck Desperate for medical equipment, states encounter a beleaguered national stockpile States desperate for materials from the stockpile are encountering a beleaguered system beset by years of underfunding, changing lines of authority, confusion over the allocation of supplies and a lack of transparency from the administration, according to interviews with state and federal officials and public health experts. The stockpile holds masks, drugs, ventilators and other items in secret sites around the country. It has become a source of growing frustration for many state and hospital officials who are having trouble buying — or even locating — crucial equipment on their own to cope with the illness battering the nation. www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/desperate-for-medical-equipment-states-encounter-a-beleaguered-national-stockpile/2020/03/28/1f4f9a0a-6f82-11ea-aa80-c2470c6b2034_story.html?fbclid=IwAR3Ukl8whUrxDcwiYogymKVj07jST-0w1z6YYdL8FZHBBkjCLVFY_JXt00E

I better not hear one peep from people about the "Chinese virus" after this. While there are a lot of things I disagree with regarding China I admire them for stepping up for the good of humanity and helping out no matter how much of a dick our president has been towards them.

Pretty ironic that, on Feb 7, the trump administration sent 17.8 tons of "masks, gowns, gauze, respirators, and other vital material TO China. This is while the WHO was sounding the alarm and trump was dismissing it. Back on February 7, the World Health Organization sounded alarm bells about "the limited stock of PPE," noting demand was 100 times higher than normal for this equipment. Yet the same day as the WHO warning, the Trump administration announced that it was transporting to China nearly 17.8 tons (more than 35,000 pounds) of "masks, gowns, gauze, respirators, and other vital materials." As Secretary of State Mike Pompeo noted in the press release announcing this shipment, "These donations are a testament to the generosity of the American people." Americans indeed are a generous people. We want to help those in need. And at the time these medical supplies were shipped, more than 28,000 people in China were infected with nearly 600 deaths attributed to the virus. But how could Trump allow tons of vital medical equipment Americans to be transported to another country in February if, as he has claimed since January, he fully understood the risk the United States was facing from the virus. www.cnn.com/2020/03/29/opinions/coronavirus-personal-protective-equipment-obeidallah/index.htmlHere's the State Dept Press Release www.state.gov/the-united-states-announces-assistance-to-combat-the-novel-coronavirus/

I was raised adjacent enough to enough churchy folk to understand that many would interpret the above turn of events as "casting bread ..." I'm not going to piss on sending shy of 20 tons of equipment and getting 80 tons back six weeks later.
Not gonna bless the politicos that made this miracle happen too much either. It's just a good thing for New York, Illinois, Ohio, and the other hotspots that need equipment desperately.

That's a valid point. But you can't avoid the irony. Unfortunately even after shipping supplies TO China, trump was still claiming that the Obama administration had left the US without adequate medical equipment and supplies.
