Sucky time to need healthcare. DH was peeing blood this morning. Tried to call the clinic and was on hold for 30 mins. Was told there was no one available to talk to him and they would call back. He put a call into his urologists office and was told an on call nurse would call him back. We waited two hours and finally a nurse called back. If there is pain “go to the ER”. If he cant pee, “go to the ER”.He was given a list of symptoms and told if he had any of them “go to the ER”. They are not even making appointments other than “virtual”. Everything is COVID. 😰

Thank you, Pink. There is no pain so he is monitoring. Obviously the ER is the last place he’d want to go to
I just needed to vent...

So sorry, GG. That could be a lot of things. UTI, kidney infection, etc. Does he have a problem with kidney stones? You don't have to respond to my questions, just giving you some ideas what the problem could be. Praying it's nothing major. (I used to handle ER charts. Can you tell?)

We're getting a lot of emails about "virtual" visits. But we haven't had to see if these actually work or not.

busymom, Yes he had issues with kidney stones a couple of years ago. His urologist said if they returned he’d remove them. Timing could not be worse.
lynnherself, I have no idea what a “virtual visit” entails. Guessing a telephone conference. I hope I don’t need to find out.
This experience is driving home the reality that COVID19 doesn’t just affect the elderly (yes, I know we are “the elderly”) It is affecting anyone who needs healthcare.

More like Skype. A video visit.

GG, didn't they even call in a script for him? Maybe they are ONLY thinking kidney stones & not a UTI?
ETA...My urologist called yesterday & cancelled my appt. for next Fri. This appt. has been put off 4 times now since early Feb. by one or the other of us.

Mine was a video visit. I feel sorry for less tech savvy people. They told me the smart phone was the better option. I tried two days in a row and could not get the two required apps and Chrome browser to work together.
I finally got the test call to work on my laptop the first time. I had a little trouble getting it to work for my actual visit. I had to reload it a couple times. I ultimately got logged in several minutes early.
I've had a sinus infection since the beginning of March. The sinus surgery I had in Sept 2018 reduced the number of infections but they seem to be much harder to get rid of now.
Every single one has taken 3 rounds of antibiotics and steroids to kill. The ones last year cultures were done and it was bacterial. My appointment to have a culture was cancelled. The allergy/ENT office completely closed. No video visits, just you are out of luck.

He’s been drinking a LOT of water and, so far, no more bloody urine. (fingers crossed)

He’s been drinking a LOT of water and, so far, no more bloody urine. (fingers crossed) I had no other symptoms other than bloody urine & they ended up doing a scope up into my bladder...I had 2 bladder infections....one a severe infection & one just a regular infection. The Dr. cauterized them while I was out & gave me a script to make sure it didn't come back right away. This happened twice to me...a year apart. So just because there is no pain or any other symptoms, doesn't mean there isn't some kind of infection. What about AZO? Did the nurse suggest that?...or drinking cranberry juice? DH has cleared up a couple of mild UTIs by drinking LOTS of diluted cranberry. His VA Dr. told him to do that off/on to help prevent future ones too. PS...I sure hope he remains clear.

So far so good this morning, no more blood in urine. He will continue monitoring. He really wants to avoid going to the ER.
Thank you for the good thoughts and support. It is much appreciated.

You can buy test strips at drugstores/Walmart/online to test for leukocytes (white blood cells). If the leukocytes are elevated, it's an infection.

You're welcome. They're very easy to use...just pee on a stick. If it turns purple, you've got yourself an infection.

I hope the improvement continues. This really is a bad time to have any sort of medical issue. Sorry you and your hubs are having to deal with this!
