So DH and I tried Zoom last evening. We had "Happy Hour" with our good friends who live 40 miles away. It actually worked quite well.
I'm going to use it with a friend from the local genealogy society. We are wondering if it (or another similar app) could be used for the class I was scheduled to teach since the genealogy society is closed.
Any other applications you have used? Recommendations?

Donnadub has had 3 Zoom chats with 3 friends this week. One is single so extra lonely right now.
I have had FaceTime calls with the Dubettes.
We had a Google hangout chat that included Stockholm, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Portland.
There is also Skype available. All ways to ‘see’ friends and loved ones.

i zoom regularly for work but last week suggested my book club also zoom. we had a trial run to work out the tech, and it was hilarious, eight different 60 plus year old broads squinting at our various devices, trying to figure out the different settings. someone figured out how to change the background picture and by the end, we were zoom masters LOL. So book club continues unabated, fuck the virus.

I'm hearing Zoom is only free for 40 minute long 'conferences' - on the free version. Which is great! Friends and I are going to attempt "game night" tonight using google hangouts. We need at least 3 to 4 hours of time. We did a test drive of google hangouts last night an it was 30 minutes of nonstop laughter (literally - we couldn't stop laughing it was so silly trying to figure out the phone settings or laptop settings - and just how very silly and funny and geeky it was that we were gonna play a pencil, paper, and dice game without all of us sitting at the same table.) I'll know if google hangouts works well for longer sessions or not tonight. The Geeks and Nerds will inherit the earth.

We just did a zoom and after 40 minutes a message popped up that said as a gift, Zoom was giving us unlimited time.

We just had a FaceTime with the Dubettes. All four of us were on our devices... my phone, Donnaduuon her iPad, and the Dubettes on their laptops. All three cats also participated.😍

We held a trial meeting via Zoom yesterday preparatory to having our regular town committee meeting this coming Thursday. I worked very well, once we got the hang of it, which was also quick. There is a 40 minute maximum for the free version, which the company waived for us, same as what happened for thyme4change I wish they would have done that Thursday instead. I guess after 40 minutes it just ends, without any warning.

I'm doing my zumba class on zoom tonight for the first time. It's not on the channel store on my tv. Does anyone know if I can sign in on my phone and cast to my tv?

I was wondering this too. I think your invite has to be on g-mail rather than FB Messenger. I will ask my niece tomorrow, she uses zoom for her exercise class too.

I have a Roku tv and you can not on those. I'll have to drag my ancient laptop out instead.

You can put the ap on your phone, but I have been using an I-pad I bought DH for Christmas. I know my niece is using a lap top on her end. She was having trouble with the sound one day, and she had to switch from one lap top to another.
I have 3 smart TV's in my basement family room. 2 in the bar, and one if the family room area. I use the open area between the back of the sofa and my kitchen to work out - it is probably about 15x 14. I could make more room if I move the fusball table we only use when we have a party, but I really don't need more space.

Ugh. First work meetings with zoom. What's the point of working from home if I have to be presentable?

Ugh. First work meetings with zoom. What's the point of working from home if I have to be presentable? you only need to be presentable from the waist up. Or if you are like me and have a loaner company laptop that someone turned the camera off on - refuse to look how to turn it back on --- LOL

Plus, the resolution is so bad, no make-up or maybe only a little.

And I wouldn't want to bother the help desk with such a mundane problem when they are so busy

For everybody, but particularly those using Zoom for work, a note of caution: This article on NPR discusses a security flaw that allows hackers to enter the meetings without an invite. It also links further down to an article on Motherboard discussing the privacy concerns with the software and the fact that it's sharing information with Facebook. "Things you just would like to have in a chat and video application — strong encryption, strong privacy controls, strong security — just seem to be completely missing," said Patrick Wardle, a security researcher who previously worked at the National Security Agency.

It is much more stable than skype and it is great fun to not just hear but also see the little ones. I should know as I've been doing this for years
