If we want to do that, that requires a national response, state by state won't work, because you will continue to risk infections from the ones not doing it, even if you are OK now. Problem will be longer lasting then. A point our leadership fails to grasp. An additional point that our leadership fails to grasp...we have low numbers of confirmations because there is low testing. 1/10th of 1% of the population in my state has been tested. And from that, our leadership is going to extrapolate that it's perfectly fine to get back to normal life before Easter. Clearly my state has folks that are far more devout than those in Georgia.

pulmonarymd - when is your self-quarantine up and will you head straight back to the hospital? Finally out of jail today, they are taking it easy on me, seeing patients in my office. Back to ICU next weeks, just in time for the shit to really hit the fan. Been posting in between patients, as some don't want to come in for some reason, I wonder why? Having to catch up on some administrative stuff, which has been giving me an ulcer, so I aam procrastinating some.

My husband is finishing up his last job before isolation... he's working alone for a doctor and his wife (outside, never closer than 6 feet)... the doc came home early today, said no one was coming in for appointments and the hospital has been largely cleared of anyone who isn't in extreme need... so everyone who can was going home to sleep and get things in order before the crap hits the fan here locally. He expects that to be next week here but I guess we wait and see.

In a really weird way, I'm good with a blanket DNR. I have one in place, of course, but DH could not hear or understand or remember any of that sort of stuff if I were hospitalized. So, if I'm hospitalized, it's really best that someone else makes the call. As much as I want to live, I don't want to live as a "beep, beep, beep" before flat-lining if someone else has a shot and I only have months of disability in home before the inevitable outcome.

If I were to be hospitalized with CV, I would definitely not want doctors or nurses to risk their lives responding without proper protection. I just wouldn’t.

NYC people are fleeing the city to their summer homes in northern NY and the adirondacks. The local hospital has 4, yes 4, vents, and 10 ICU beds, 5 of which are generally occupied by patients. This area is fucked if they are contagious, or if they become sick. It seems very short sighted to run there if you have any chance of having gotten the virus. If you think your life may be at risk, very few people are anything but short-sighted. But also most people won't think they have the virus. We're not just mass-testing everyone...if you feel fine there's no real reason to think you're infected.

You could be feeling fine and be contagious. aka Rand Paul Asymptomatic Carriers Are Fueling the COVID-19 Pandemic. Here’s Why You Don’t Have to Feel Sick to Spread the Disease In a study published in the journal Science earlier this month, Shaman and his colleagues found that undocumented COVID-19 cases were responsible for 86 percent of the spread of the disease in China before the country enacted travel restrictions on January 23, 2020. www.discovermagazine.com/health/asymptomatic-carriers-are-fueling-the-covid-19-pandemic-heres-why-you-dont

My Mom and I were talking about this last night. She and Dad have been very clear with us kids over the last 35+ years that they do NOT want to be vegetables, hooked up on machines to keep them alive but not aware. But they also are not ready to die and not particularly willing to be sacrificed just because they are 78 and 81.

I suppose, I just don't see myself running to a place with a woefully small hospital if I can help it. That may be influenced by the fact that I have 3 hospitals within 15 minutes from my house.

What if you only have small hospitals within 30 minutes? That is my reality

I only have small hospitals for hundreds of miles here. The one downside of living in the largest, yet least populated, county in the country. I'd have a better chance of medical care if I were a cow or horse and needed vet care. However, I've been a DNR forever. I've always told my kids to deny hooking me up to a vent or a dialysis machine. That hasn't changed for me and, personally, if the choice is me or someone younger/healthier, please give the help to someone else.

Learned today CHI is opening up old hospital sites. One of which is state of the art they created for SARS but since that kinda petered out they closed it. All they have to do is establish negative air flow and it's ready to go. At least for the time being the metro area has enough beds. That was good to hear.

I'm starting to think living in fly over country is an advantage. Nobody wants to live here let alone deliberately summer here.

Not written by me, but copy/pasted and a good reminder for us all.
Sorry, but I'm not following. A reminder of what, exactly?

MD, some would believe that. Me, I have a little more trouble with it. I think if God caused all this, then we also have to give him the responsibility for this and well as giving him the "thank you" for those things that are good that we experience. I've been told that's not the way it works.

A reminder of what, exactly? That whatever God people believe in is in charge. So he caused this? Well, according to the bible, it's god who rains down the plagues on humanity. It doesn't project a comfortable feeling of "God has your back!"
