this is an excellent point, Bills.
I think we can rely on the blue states to do the right thing. this means that the coastal regions may fare fairly well. the real problem will be a place like Chicago, which gets a lot of red state road traffic, and purple states like Colorado.
I forsee a time when the borders of the blue states will be closed to states that have no emergency orders in place. this would be most germane in Washington, which shares a border with "go ahead and go to a bar" Idaho.
the plague will be able to run it's course in the red states until they start getting serious about it. and that will impact everyone, until something is done to fence them off from the rest of us.
we know where this is going, folks. well, all but the president and his cult, it would seem.
So will we see the development of the Red State League and the Blue State League to replace the American and National Leagues? I don't think this is the American League anyone wants, but it beats being dead.

White House put out statement that anyone leaving NYC quarantine for 2 weeks. Can’t see that helping baseball.

White House put out statement that anyone leaving NYC quarantine for 2 weeks. Can’t see that helping baseball. Yet our local bus line is still taking people that live Locally to NYC and back several times each day. They claim to be “essential” employees and they are now infecting the hell out of my area of the state Big uproar and the local bus company agreed to shut it down this Friday. There are still other, small transportation companies that transport the people. No government agency shut it down and it is putting people in my state at risk

He can help set up the situation in which millions might die. But how much can he really do? Back to the OP - can he force MLB to open their season? I know if they do open and players make the individual choice to show up to play, people will attend but that would be their choice. He can't force them to show up. etc with other activities. this is an excellent point, Bills.

And yet my governor is a democrat and he is allowing bus companies to run customers from NYC into my state. This happens several times a day. I would definitely say the democratic governor is not acting in the best interest of his constituents. And his idea of “essential businesses” is laughable.

Not loving paying Philly rent for a room full of stuff, but I’m not going near there right now.

out of curiosity, does the order authorizing "essential businesses" to operate MINIMALLY or "as usual".
most of the emergency orders have the latter wording.
then we have Texas, which is giving free rein to the virus at this late hour.

NY is in crisis mode, they are just trying to survive. Your governor could do something, so I agree he deserves some blame. But when the federal response is all over the place, it’s impossible to have a consistent response

I’m in PA and all businesses that are not life sustaining were shit down as of Thursday evening. That includes daycares, malls, gyms, salons, bars, the liquor stores, real estate offices, etc. There are a lot of people laid off right now. So the governor shits down a lot of our businesses (I agree with) and then imports people from a god damn hot zone?! I’m beyond livid

I’m not in Philly so admittedly I am Not up as much on that. The bus from NYC literally drops people 10 minutes from my house (first stop on the poconos and that is definitely harder hit than we are-but we are catching up).

Our governor controls who gets shut down and who doesn’t. No one should need direction from a president. And over the last week, several politicians in my state (from both sides) have written letters to get him to stop this. Finally, public image got to the bus company and they are stopping in two more days. Two more days of brining in people from a hot spot He shut the schools down super early but then allows busses?

And I am 100% against saving the economy at the expense of older people, as suggested.
I get it. It sucks and locally we are already seeing small restaurants go out of business. But if a business goes under in less than two weeks, they were barely surviving to begin with.

But if a business goes under in less than two weeks, they were barely surviving to begin with. This is where a president with half a brain would be helpful. All we can go by is prediction models. These models can be adjusted based on a number of factors. If he listened to these experts, he would have a starting point as to how many people would die with no or various interventions, and then the economic cost involved. We can’t keep this up indefinitely, and medical people and first responders need to get to work. So the question is, where do you draw the line. If trump had been serious from the beginning, he could have prepared us for whatever was decided, and he likely would have gotten credit he would have deserved, and we would have a rational response. Italy is a warning, and we appear to be heading their way. That’s what a functional administration would have done. Instead we have a family run kleptocracy

dced.pa.gov/newsroom/all-non-life-sustaining-businesses-in-pennsylvania-to-close-physical-locations-as-of-8-pm-today-to-slow-spread-of-covid-19/I’m on my phone and can’t easily copy text In this, it says the governor has the authority over movement of people in the disaster area, and ingress/egress into out of disaster area. The governor had the power to restrict the movement of busses into our state but chose not to do so We are an essential employer and we have guidelines to follow but we are also not going into hot zones.

Is Amtrak still running NY till Philly? Not loving paying Philly rent for a room full of stuff, but I’m not going near there right now. could your break the lease? DD's lease goes to May 16th (Private, not university owned). So I am hoping that when the lease is over, we will be able to move her stuff out. She has a bed, nightstand, a TV and some kitchenware. She said her clothes are all at home. also the prior tenants left a nice table and some end tables. We might bring them home too, depends if we have a place to put them. I need to get my deck stained so I can get my lawn furniture outside. It is in the basement - then I can put some of her stuff in that spot.
Hopefully by fall she will be back to work.

Idaho just shut down for 21 days with a "stay at home" order. Not sure of all the rules and what companies are exempt, but it is a start. Our mayor had already shut down mostly everything in our city, but people were just traveling to the next town over.

He's technically on co op the next 2 terms... his apartment is university affiliated and will alter leases for co ops. Co ops are pretty much crazy right now... everything go interrupted, lots got cancelled... they will pretty much approve anything (reasonable) and personally obtained co ops can be altered... so technically I could have a friend with a tangentially related business agree to co op and do it distance for a bit and then if he found something else rewrite it later if needed... and get out of the lease... but right now i'm not going down there to remove his stuff. I barely can do no contact grocery pick up in my county.

People from NY have been told they should quarantine themselves if they go elsewhere. Don't know how that would be enforced.
We are a tourism/ vacation state. Last weekend (nice weather in the upper 40's) our southernmost beaches were quite busy with day trippers from away, mostly from MA. The towns of York and Wells closed the beaches to stop it. We also had a large quantity of snowmobilers out west and up north, also from away. The Governor has discouraged people from coming, but says she has no legal authority to actually bar them from coming (Don't know what the state Constitution says about it and haven't checked)
She has also said that she understands people want to get out, but that doing so in this manner is not safe. She has also dropped the licensing requirements for Maine residents to fish, and has encouraged Mainers to get out and go fishing. Apparently she is an enthusiastic angler, who knew? Presumably the fisher people would keep their distance.....
Meanwhile, commercial fisheries are shutting down. :~(

Indeed, and it is deemed "essential"- allowed to continue for now, but there are too few buyers. Prices crashed, and it isn't worth going out.

Fishing would put food on the table. Indeed, and it is deemed "essential"- allowed to continue for now, but there are too few buyers. Prices crashed, and it isn't worth going out. I wasn't referring to commercial fishing. I was referring to the average Joe literally putting a fish on the table for their family. So in that instance definitely an essential.
