I am making a list, too, The Walk of the Penguin Mich. I am going to try to make the Walmart senior hour on Tuesday, which starts at 6 am. I will have to take a nap afterwards for sure. But I need stuff besides just food. I need rose food for DH's roses and maybe some aphid spray. I need another can of spray paint for the lawn furniture. And I'd like to pick up a few more plants for the deck. Maybe even a tomato plant although I've had horrible luck with those. And some baby aspirin for my heart regimen. I am actually ok on food for now although I will need bread. And alcohol. I've noticed that I am becoming more conscious of waste. If I didn't really enjoy something, I tossed it. Now I'm trying to eat it up, anyway.

Next week will likely be a Costco run. I have started making a list.....something I rarely do......and will continue to add to it. I added salad making things to the list, the grocery store had squat there. TD is trying to bribe Harriet to come up to him on the sofa. Something about the sofa with a male sitting on it scares the crap out of her. So he is giving her cut up chicken strips while he is sitting on it. A month ago, she would come up to him feet on the floor and skitter away if he moved too quickly. Then her front paws came up. Now she is jumping up on the sofa to get her treat. It is taking a long time to get rid of the 6 years of abuse she endured and a very slow process. I hope to get a bag of the frozen chicken tenders, a lot cheaper than grocery store take out. My friend Linda adopted a cat which was so badly abused, it still will not be in the same room as a human...after 6 years. People suck.

I've always shopped with a list.
I think this week I will only need almond milk and that will be near the end of the week
I will not hoard.

Is anyone keeping extra cash in hand - if you normally don't do?

We did buy extra at the grocer but nothing close to hoarding. I added apples and bananas to the free fruit we get of oranges, grapefruit and lemons. That harvest will be over soon. Two days left on apples and bananas. We did stock up on soda pop. I don't keep track of H.'s beer. I just hope my son in ND got enough alcohol. They closed ALL of the bars and liquor stores. All of our neighbors, alcohol was the priority.

Went to the store Tuesday for a couple of non-necessary items. While passing the fresh meat area, everything was gone but for fresh pork items like chops and loins. No beef, chicken, or turkey. But plenty of pork. Found that interesting. Are people thinking pork has something to do with the virus? Maybe a local myth here? I don't know. Nope same in my store: the meat shelves had nothing but pork. Eventually they had no other choice so bought it but usually last to go. We don’t eat pork (preference thing for my wife and being raised by a 7th day Adventist mother for me)... but I have had it in the past plenty of time and if I fall on hard times will have it again : very cheap.

I saw a whole bunch of pork ribs, they were still frozen and cryopacked in the meat case at our grocery. A small amount of hamburger, they were limiting 2 pounds per customer. Small ham slices all laid out in one. I didn't think about people not buying pork. Growing up we ate way more pork then beef. The deli custom meat case still had meat, just not as much.
I don't need meat we went to the amish butcher shop, couple of weeks back and stocked, they had plenty of everything and I'm betting still do. We bought $400 worth meat. I have at least 25 pounds of ground round, not sure. But I bought 20 and still had some.
I have been getting a bit more money out, wash it if you want. I'm going to have cash on hand. You never know what can happen and I'm not relying on just an ATM card or credit card. Though if something happened cash would likely be worthless too. Don't want to think about that would devolve into a barter society.
We don't need anything but within another week some perishables like potatoes could start to run out, tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, though I have plenty for now. I know people here are saying within 40 to 50 miles no flour or yeast to be found. It's on facebook so couldn't vouch for that. But I know last Monday when I was in the store there wasn't many bags of flour left.

Apparently those people avoiding pork have never had barbeque ribs.

I picked up a bag of flour last week... the last one.
From what I've found the best way to get something you really need is to be there when the grocery opens. I know we are fortunate, since we don't work we can go during the week, if needed.
I really feel bad for parents and others who can't get to the store til the weekend. I'm afraid it's gone quickly. If I knew any struggling parents I would share some of mine with them, but I don't know anyone personally. We are lucky in that regard. I don't have as much as countrygirl, but on a normal day I have enough to last us a month or so. Hubby says he's glad I can cook.
Hang in there everyone.

That's what I'll need to replenish weekly, more or less. My hope is that the hoarders aren't going to buy up perishables unless they're VERY industrious and plan on canning, pickling or blanching and freezing. There's still the issue with the supply chain catching up to demand, though, and dealing with the crowds at the stores.

We have plenty of what we need maybe another week or two more than usual. Will want fresh tomatoes cukes berries next week but I’m not going to grocery store. I’m in risk age group and husband high risk. Thankful there is a store that delivers so will do that. If didn’t have possibility of delivery I would just stay home and eat whatever we have, not worth our health to just get some at this point for me luxuries Hoping local food bank can get food for those needing, gave some money and think I should weekly

From what I saw plenty of fresh foods. People seem to get precooked, frozen, crap. They likely don't even know how to prepare fresh foods or, gasp, eat them raw.

We aren't hoarding, and I didn't "over" buy, but DH was giving me a hard time over the past few weeks for buying more than our normal. Even my explanations that at least one or both boys would be moving home wasn't enough to stop his mild bitching and sighs.
Fast forward to today. He gets it. NOW he wants Clorox wipes, and there are none. Last week I made him go to 3 different stores to find some yeast and he whined about it even when all he could find were a couple of strips of the 3 packs. NOW there is no yeast or flour to be found.
I kind of want to smack him.

Fresh produce doesn't last long. People have no idea if they will be quarantined or not. Allowed out of the house or not. If they will get sick or not. If production lines will stop or not, because of sick employees. The canned and processed stuff will keep a while.

We are fortunate that there is a fresh vegetable stand nearby. The owner buys directly from the local farmers, and brings it all to her stand here. What she offers varies at different times of the year, but so far she hasn't had trouble supplying her stand. The trick is, more people are buying from her now. You've got to be there early to get what you want.

I’ll continue to buy fresh, but assume I might not be able to in the future.

Hubs quit complaining about me having food back the first of last month. He listened about China and starting elsewhere. I told him this thing could get bad and he took it to heart. I added things and filled in spots we didn't have. I'm sure there are items I have forgotten but so far so good.
We had some shrimp tonight, they were nearing freezer burn and made potato salad. We are eating less. That may be the last of the shrimp.
I'm trying to do just 1 or 2 at the most dishwasher runs to save on detergent. Not sure I could get more. Same with washing clothing.
I made a big bowl of steel cut oats for DH, DD eats Fruit Loops for breakfast or a grilled cheese, only have 1 box. I have a box of grapenuts. I bought 2 boxes of corn flakes for hubs and he has raisins with them. This is really one meal a day. We generally only eat 2 meals a day, so our food will stretch out a long time. I need to start using up the fresh stuff, though my fridge sure does keep it good a long time. I also found the cryovacced tomatoes keep quite a long while as long as they are not opened. they must be treated with something.
I had zinc tablets on order, they said didn't have them so cancelled.
I had stocked up long ago, am not hoarding, buying very little now. In fact, I'm always stocked up, thankfully I did not listen to hubs or I would be panicking now. Just wanted to make sure we had enough when the push started. So no qualms at all about what I have put back. Also allows us to get out even less.

I need to make a bowl of fruit salad. Have some apples, nectarines, bananas, oranges, and a can of pineapple. A couple of pears might be to far gone. The apples and nectarines need to be fixed tonight or will be lost. Only 4 nectarines, I don't buy many.

I have to pickup 2 RXs from Walmart today. As long as I'm there anyway, I'll take some time to walk thru the store and see what other items I might need. Overall, even with not hoarding, I have a fairly good stash, both food and other items.
I'm in week 3 of being isolated and it's not fun....but whining and carrying on hasn't seemed to work very well for me. If any of you discover a way it will help, let the best of us know.

Bought some ground beef, sandwich steaks, sirloins from a local farmer who raises Angus. Probably have enough for a number of months as I don't usually cook much beef. Have a few pounds of chicken in the freezer all separated.
Have enough TP to last awhile and tissues.
Bought produce yesterday and will just go back as needed for that and milk.
Got a big bag of cat food from the vet and one bag of litter as WM was picked almost bare.
Will just do the best we can.

Most likely won't go to a store this week. Will know for sure by the end of the week.
I know how I feel about all of this and how it is affecting me but constantly whining about it doesn't do me any good and it doesn't solve anything.
This is now life as I know it.

For now I can get fresh but that might not last. I'll see where we stand in a couple weeks and maybe go out for more fresh but I got enough canned and frozen now to last at least a month if I am smart about it. Personally I think right now with everything going on it's not the time to be high and mighty about people's diets. Keep in mind there may be people that right now cannot store your approved amount of fresh produce but still need supplies. Calories are calories if you are facing months locked in your house.

I've been buying a few cans/boxes/bags of shelf stable items and the usual fresh foods.
We eat the fresh and perishable foods and I try to not use many of the stable foods. Once all the fresh stuff runs out, then I shop.
The shelf stable foods are going to stay in the pantry for when it's less safe to go out and shop or if shopping becomes impossible.
I don't have a prepper-sized hoard of food. But, I also don't trust my government to provide food when/if the time comes and think it's prudent to have at least a few things set back.

Got more cat litter at Petsmart this a.m. I had to speak loudly to a woman and teen who were wearing gloves and mask to protect themselves so they thought it was okay to get up next to me at the checkout Supposedly the county judge is weighing shelter-in-place versus complete lockdown. I guess we'll know later today. Governor is leaving it up to local authorities which I prefer
