There's a huge park about 3 blocks from my house, and it's largely deserted. I go there with a bag of peanuts to feed the squirrels, and stale bread to feed the birds. It's a nice distraction. The mill town I live in has all the houses built in a circle around some big parks. I read this area was one of the first planned communities, or some such. I haven't seen a single child in the park until today. It made me smile to see them out there having some fun in the fresh air. I know people are freaking out about school, but kids can learn tons of valuable things just from going outdoors or playing on their own. Another positive change we might see on the backside of this crisis? I went to walk in the nearby park yesterday. I can't say it's usually empty, but holy cow was it packed yesterday. The playground area was full, the field had some families playing various ballgames, and the walking path was rather crowded. It was almost hard to keep the 6 ft distance.

jerseygirl - and all medical facilities, animal care facilities (not open to public, but staff still coming in), power plant facilities, etc. There are a lot of "essential" jobs that we don't think too much about. Grocery store checkers and stockers are the types of jobs that would normally be considered non-essential, and those are still happening.

This is why about the only thing I've been stockpiling is feed for the animals...and I really should get more. I figure they will always leave grocery stores open for people to get food, but grain and chicken feed might be a lot harder to come by. I told the gecko she might be the first casualty unless it warms up enough for there to be wild crickets to catch.
Worst case the horses and goats don't get grain anymore. I have at least a years worth of hay. They'll be pissed, but will live.
The cats get special food but could suck it up and eat grocery store stuff if they had to.

We picked up one bag of dog food last week, but plan on hitting CostCo for another 2 bags tonight.
I need to look and see if Inslee has another press conference scheduled today or tomorrow. I would not be surprised if we move to shelter in place soon, too, given that WA and King County (where I am) have been the hardest hit places in the States so far.

Our state just ordered the schools provide free childcare to emergency workers. There's a long list of professions that qualify outside of doctors and nurses. LTC workers, police officers, court room workers, etc.

We were going through all the chicken food we have. I think it's enough, but then again how to know with stores closing. I'm giving them a lot more scraps to try to make it last longer.

The last day or so has been a little tough for me.
Will life ever go back to normal? How long will it take? Who will not make it?

“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

We are having workers who rent from us furloughed, they are getting worried. One called today, doesn't know if he is or is not going to get paid. Rumors he said. they save so much back a week for rent. I told them pay what they can and wait and see what happens then we will go from there.
Our plan is to eventually just let them have a month or two free rent as this thing continues, but we don't want to start it yet when they are still being paid. As it may be 2 or 3 months. They will never catch up anyway, so just part of it. We likely will drop insurance on the properties for awhile. I don't want to take money from savings for that. We were just getting ready for this year to stop spending on them and reap the rewards. LOL! Oh well, it will work out.

my 2 nieces are now casualties of the corona virus.
Niece 1 was scheduled to attend flight attendant training at the end of the month. she quit her previous job to go to training. Niece 2 was employed by a company that runs stores in airports. She is on furlogh.
My sister is now paying condo fees, car payments, insurance, cell phones, etc. If they didn't have parents who can afford it, they'd be screwed.

Our pet shops, which sell birds and rodents, are thinking of moving ALL the animals to a centralized location. That will avoid some animals starving to death if workers can't come in. If they're all in one place, arrangements can be made to feed them.

Not enough to save all the workers in the restaurant industry, but, every little bit helps. Apparently my company decided they could take all their workers in one state down to a certain pay level by cutting their hours, that they would them qualify for unemployment payments. Not sure what state that is. I'm sure one that think free market will save the world and everything is socialism.

CEO just emailed that Monday we'll find out who is furloughed, who is on a shortened work week (and obviously pay) through May 31, and then I guess some can volunteer to go without pay. Kinda crappy to do at 350pm on a Friday!!! At least he volunteered that the exec staff is all taking pay cuts too. Though a pay cut on a 6 figure + salary is a lot easier to stomach than a cut on smaller ones. I'm on the shortened work week. My boss sent me an invite for a midweek meeting like 20 minutes after the email went out so hoping that's good news.

I had a heart attack between release of the second and third Peter Jackson movies. Added a little extra delight to seeing The Return of the King.

We have always felt like the red headed stepchild. We are being cut back to just me working half time due to no business at the facility. It makes sense but there is still a part of me that is very curious about cuts in other parts of the organization. That information is not offered freely to me.

We have a local restaurant that stated if anyone is hungry come by. They will see they get something to eat. This is a wonderful family, Italian, fantastic food and less expensive then the rest. I intend to go by tomorrow and donate at least $200 that they can use to help feed some folks. I hope they don't get overwhelmed with takers.
Also going to buy a rocker for MIL, have to spend some more down, I'm about there. I doubt there business is as good as normal, so will do a bit for them, its a great local furniture store.
Our giving will mostly be for renters. The guy going back to work the 30th was going to pay what he could. I told him keep at least $50, he is going to have to drive to Kansas to pick up the semi. Might help him get something to eat at least. He can't pay us till April 17th, but he will.
We will do more if need be for folks, but still need to be careful.

I will say that giving someone a bowl of pasta is pretty inexpensive, so they may be capable of getting a lot of people fed. If it was, say, a steak house - they'd be putting out some big money.

They have huge servings and it is absolutely delicious food. We don't eat there often as it is soooo fattening. And their pizzas are to die for. We have a local Taste of Food deal in town with all the restaurants and they generally win. It's that good. And its probably 1/3 to 1/2 as much as the other restaurants. I think it will help feed quit a few, I hope.

I still suggest everyone stock up as much as possible and also have money on hand. It's not going to be pretty out there.

I wish I could volunteer more. But being 65 with an at risk spouse I don't think it is wise. I really wish I felt safe to go give blood. Also trying to decide about donations. We're down an insane amount of money, but still have much more than others. I need to figure out where donating will do the most good.

I too am deciding. But ours will have to be used to keep our rentals going and to let our tenants stay in them. And right now we don't know for how long. We can do it a year if needed but you hate to let people get used to not paying rent plus could be legal issues on eventually evicting if you have to. So there is that aspect.
