I have a tooth that is seriously hurting. It's causing pain all the way from my chin, up into my ear, and down my neck. On the same side, my tongue, cheek, and neck are swollen. I can't find a dentist who will see me before the 23rd... The local office suggested Motrin and ice until then. When I asked about an antibiotic for the infection I assume I have, was told they will prescribe one on the 23rd to take until they have time to do any work. At this point, I think I am willing to just have the tooth pulled if I could find anyone with the appointment time to do it. Otherwise, any suggestions for what to do when the salt, ice, Orajel, Motrin, Sensodyne plan stops working and simply moving my head hurts like hell?

That sounds kinda serious. Are there any large cities nearby with an emergency dentist? I wouldn't want you ending up in the ER due to a serious infection.

I've been calling around to Bend and Boise, ID but haven't found anyone yet who will see me this week. Everyone's suggestion has been go to the local ER. I know the ER won't be able to deal with the problem and it isn't really an appropriate use of that service. I'm trying to figure out if there is some sort of urgent care alternative where I could get an antibiotic. I have some Flagyl but only 10 pills. Not sure if that will help or not. So frustrating.

A few suggestions. Ask for a cancellation appointment, it might get you in earlier than the 23rd. Urgent care? Otherwise, a trip to the ER might be required, you will likely get antibiotics and punted to a dentist, but at least you’d be on antibiotics.

I was hoping someone would freak out about the coronavirus and cancel. So far, no luck there.

Flagyl will not help. If an urgent care/medical doctor is not available, I would go to the ER. Optimally, you’d want to go to a dentist, but anyone who can prescribe antibiotics will work until you get into the dentist.

A real long shot but are there any dental colleges near you. They often have (not sure of the word) open to the public days where students treat people with dental issues. Part of the curriculum.

I understand you don't want to go to the ER, but an infection isn't going to wait for an appt. The ER should be able to get you antibiotics

I would go to Urgent Care or the ER. They should be able to at least give you the antibiotics. I would be worried about waiting so long and the infection moving throughout your body. When I had an abscessed tooth, the day I got in to the dentist, I was already starting to feel shaky/sick in the rest of my body and not just my jaw/tooth.

DIY for dental infection? Don’t.
Seriously dental issues can easily result in systemic body infections and death. We do not take teeth seriously in this country. Go to the doctor now.

Go to Urgent Care. They'll give you an antibiotic if you are showing signs of infection. Don't wait. Believe it or not, the infection can affect your heart.
ETA: I think I am remembering that you are on Medicaid? The ER may be your only choice then because a lot of Urgent Care clinics won't acccept Medicaid. I don't know how Medicaid works with dentists. Is that the real problem in that only a few dentists will accept it? if so, I would just pay out of pocket.

I was away from the computer earlier so i made it quick... but my father once got a tooth infection they couldn't identify and he was having multi system failure till they caught it... he was so ill, and then got C-Diff in the hospital. Honestly, his health has never been quite the same. Don't take this lightly at all. Do whatever needs to be done.

I had a tooth infected once and didn’t realize it. Didn’t hurt much so I chucked it to “whatever”. It got to the point that my kidneys were hurting bad and I was one step away from passing out while driving. Take care of it now!!!

I called the dental office back today and told them I cannot deal with this pain for two weeks and they are going to try to get me in tomorrow afternoon. I'm supposed to call in the late morning.
The ER claims if it's a dental problem I need to go to a dentist or may find my insurance won't pay for the visit and I will end up with the bill. The dental office confirmed that as soon as I tell the local ER what the problem is they will tell me to call a dentist and won't do anything.
Hoping they get me in tomorrow and at this point I will opt to just have the tooth pulled. I can't be in this much pain for weeks. Even Orajel does nothing at this point. The skin on my face burns with some sort of sharp nerve pain. I have pain under my jaw from my chin to my ear and then down my neck and my tongue and the tissue below it is swollen. Damn this is miserable.

That is horrible, I'm guessing you do not have a regular dentist. You get in there get yourself established so you don't have to go through this again.
I was thinking if you went to an ER they would refer you to a dentist you could get into, but sounds like you are getting it taken care of. So sorry to hear you are going through this, I have had dental pain and just think its not like any other. But you definitely need to get it taken care of. Teeth can cause serious health issues.
Take care

The dentist had a cancellation today, so I went in and they removed the pulp and nerve from my sore tooth and will crown it in May.
It was kinda painful and required at least 6 shots to get it numb, but it feels better now that it's all numb...
Right now when I bite down all I feel is my top tooth hitting the temp filling material and I hope that's normal.

Be careful not to bite your lip or cheek, and take something before the meds wear off.

I was thinking about you today, @shastasnewlife, and hoping you got into a dentist's office. (I had a long appointment of my own at the dentist today.) I'm thankful you got in. Tooth infections can be very serious, so while I'm sorry you're going through this, I'm glad it's getting taken care of.

She said I might still be partially numb in the morning because she couldn't get my nerves numb and kept having to inject me. It feels really weird, but at least the pain is gone! Well, for now...

Tooth infections can be very serious, so while I'm sorry you're going through this, I'm glad it's getting taken care of. Thank you. I was fortunate they had a cancellation and time to deal with it today. It was also nice not to have to sit around and think about it because it was a "can you be here in 10 minutes" call. Thankfully, I'd just showered. I'm also on the same-day call list for the crown after the antibiotics are done. I'd much better get called in than sit here dreading it. She said the pulp was infected and that's why I've been having so much pain. She claims the official root canal and crown won't be as painful... The good news is the last dentist told me I had a lot of decay and needed serious work. This dentist said I have a few cavities but otherwise my teeth look really good and I shouldn't need a ton of work like I had feared. The Oregon Health Plan paid for today, but I will have to pay 2K out of pocket for the crown. For the fillings, I am going to opt to pay out of pocket as well to not have the type with mercury in them.

Right now when I bite down all I feel is my top tooth hitting the temp filling material and I hope that's normal. My dad was a dentist. When I was around 30 years old dad told me it was time to remove my two upper wisdom teeth (no lower wisdom teeth came in). So dad is giving me novocaine shots. He says he will be back in ten minutes. Comes back ten minutes later and with his dental pick he asks me if I can feel him poking around the area with the novocaine. I say yes. He gives me a few more shots of novocaine. Tells me he will be back in ten minutes. Comes back in ten minutes with the dental pick. ""Can you feel this?" I said no. BOOM! Those two teeth were pulled in like 30 seconds. When dad was done I said to him "I thought you told me you would tell me when you were going to begin pulling out the teeth." Dad replied, "I lie to all the little kids." Dad was a good dentist. I have zero fears of dentists because of dad.

You're blessed Tennesseer. My Mom was tough as nails. She could even get a crown without needing any novocaine. So, she figured us kids didn't need any painkiller when we were getting fillings done. And, there was a time when dentists used "hot" drills. And, my teeth are VERY sensitive. I cannot begin to describe how much that hurt as a kid. So, I always get painkiller now. But, I still remember too clearly those days when I was a kid. Today I had a large filling replaced, and now they check your blood pressure before they begin. Needless to say, my blood pressure shot up. But, they let me get the work done anyway.

When I went to bed last night I was still really numb. So, I was a bit concerned I would still have pain this morning. Other than a slight amount of soreness where all the Novocain injections were given - I have ZERO pain or discomfort today for the first time in a LONG time. So awesome!
