over the top movie palaces that are for the most part gone now... There are five left in Connecticut...see posted article. The Palace in Waterbury, completely re done, $40 million spent is one style I remember.. The Loews Poli Palace in New Haven, very similar layout, decor.., sat 3000 plus I believe with full balcony, side box seats, three lobbies, all ornate plus sweeping staircases to the balcony..It was never as new posh as the one now in Waterbury that was redone, but the basics were there....the Bijoux across the street, a unbelievable hugh chandelier..{Mom didn't want to go there , said had rats...as if the one across the street didn't...down town businesses...if one had rats they all did but always listened to your Mom..} All pics are grand but the third one down, the Palace, is the grandest. I have a cousin who lives in New Town, {Yes, that Newtown} who has season tickets to the productions they put on there..travel Broadway shows..featured entertainers and says the atmosphere acoustics are fabulouse...always a sell out.. ------------------------------------------------ www.courant.com/ctnow/arts-theater/hc-ctnow-movie-palaces-connecticut-20200203-tffwkqng5jh6taq3sz5ewyxoge-story.html

I seem to remember the phrase but being a military brat in Los Angeles area, didn't have the funds to go.
I know they were very ornate and I hope a lot are kept for other productions.

While not a movie theater, across the street from the College Street Music Hall in New Haven is the Shubert Theater known for out-of-town tryouts for potential Broadway-bound plays and musicals. A couple pictures inside the Shubert Theater. I have attended performances at the Shubert and College Street Music Hall. Saw James Brown in concert at the College Street Music Hall. The old Broadway expression, 'We bombed in New Haven' is about plays and musicals that never made it any further than the Shubert Theater. THE SAM S. SHUBERT THEATRE : HistoryJoseph Heller, author of Catch-22, also wrote a play entitled 'We bombed in New Haven.' It is occasionally revived in other theaters around the country from time-to-time.

I saw my first Broadway show with my brother ..{traveling} at the Shubert Theater...was hooked..."Guys and Dolls"...parents went to NYC when played there and got tickets for us..a matinee... There was a very upscale restaurant across the street from the theater.."Caseys "...had a thick picture window that they would have a great steak and big Lobster there to intice"...never did eat there, not sure if parents did either...Pricy ...My son will go for these outrageous priced places at times..usually on vacation...Actually I met my daughter a few years ago at a resort in Boca...They had like three restaurants all top drawer....They had a lobster offered one night..$49.00...she pushed me to order...it was her treat..{can well afford it glad to say}...still feel guilty but I think that is most extravagant meal I have had...When working , went to some NYC steak places..."The Palm" I remember one...but bosses picked up charges then...probably pricy too.

Sure. we have places like the Rialto Theatre. They're used for live shows now. Great that they have preserved some of those great theaters...Radio City Music Hall ..one of my favorites. Believe Daughter and family. were in the City over Christmas, and went to that theater...picked up tickets much earlier...sold out for ever.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. Most people fall in love with this city. The food....OMG! You can't a swing a cat without hitting an ornate cathedral....this city is awash in them. Lol, families no longer dress up in their finery and go visiting on Sundays. Those days are gone.
