My new house was supposed to close 2/13 and we had previously asked the sellers if they would close early so I can move. I got word today that they are making the trip from out-of-state to get the few things they wanted out of the house during a break in the winter storms and then we are closing next week! So excited! I guess now I have to sort my stuff again and figure out what will/won't fit in my truck...

Yay! That is, indeed, Very Exciting! I hope the weather cooperates so that everything gets done and you can move safely and without unnecessary storm drama. Do you have a bottle of champagne to celebrate? Or at least fizzy apple juice if champagne is not your choice? Congratulations!

Very happy for you. It's hard to be unsettled for so long.
I hope this house and living away from all the stuff you had to put up with makes you happy.

That's wonderful. I'm excited for you.
OTOH, it still sounds like your move-in is at the mercy of the weather.
Have you decided yet whether to take the bitch or leave her with your mother for a while? *
* I'll change my description of your younger dog if forced to do so.
ETA: I see from the other thread that you have decided to leave her. Good choice!
Sorry about not keeping up. I was sorta avoiding that thread for a while.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. I need to fix my screen name. Yes, I am going to leave my younger dog behind. The bitch label is both technically accurate and accurate for how she behaves towards me. lol Typically, dogs love me. This one has a mind of her own and never really bonded well with me. She loves being with my mom and chasing around her two dogs, so I'm happy, she's happy, and my mom really likes her and has an older dog that isn't long for this world so she said she will happily keep her here. If she gets to be too much, I can always come get her after I get settled. I will sign papers here in CA and move when Mother Nature decides to give me a clear window. Right now everything has melted along my route but I don't see that likely holding out for too long. I also plan to spend the night about 1/2 way there at my DS and his GF's house since the 14+ hour trip is too much for me to do in one day and my last trip taught me I don't want to drive up there at night if I can help it. They both work weird hours/days, so I will need to time that as well.

Regarding moving, you might check into shipping a few boxes. My adopted mom ended up with homes in San Jose, Phoenix, and Memphis - long story. She swore by shipping a box or à two when going between them. In addition to the usual suspects like Fed Ex, UPS and USPS, I have also found great prices with Greyhound and Amtrak.

I had put these questions in your thread about fences but I'm moving them here since that thread got so out of control.
Are you going to have an inspection before you buy the new house? I'm curious about the process of buying a house in the winter. I can't remember - is it on a well and septic? I would imagine you can test the water anytime but can you test a septic system during the winter? What about the basement? I have never heard of a basement that has a water heater but can't be accessed from inside the house. How would you fix or replace the water heater if it died in the winter?
I'm not trying to give you a hard time at all. These are just things that I have been wondering about. :-)

I've considered shipping some stuff. I also considered renting a Pod and putting all my crap into it and moving it all that way. (really expensive!) I bought some tarps, rope, and a cargo net for my truck. My current plan is to play Tetris a bit and see how much crap I can fit in the bed and in the cab. I am also considering building some wood racks for the sides of the bed so I can stack more boxes in it. My mom is fine with me leaving behind some stuff because she has a ton of unused storage space. I may leave my holiday boxes and other things I don't really need and take them home next time I visit. Other than my clothing and my rock saw, everything else is optional. lol

I think they need to add pets and their care to the list. I did not have the house inspected. We inspected the last two and found the inspections not worth the paper they were written on. I did spend a lot of time looking at all the plumbing, etc... while I was in the house. All the utilities were on, so I was able to check for leaks, make sure things worked, etc... The house has public utility water, sewer, etc... So no issues with water or septic to deal with. The house has a concrete basement with the furnace and water heater and it is only accessible via the outdoor hatch. Three of the 6 houses I looked at that day had the same. Apparently, back in the 1930's-40's that was a thing. The area gets about 25" of snow a year, so it's accessible for repairs/replacements but might require some shoveling.

Many years ago, when I was married and lived on a ranch, our house had a door like that. We called it the cellar and it housed the water heater. It was also great for storing my canning and jams/jellies along with produce for winter.

Does your new truck have a trailer hitch? When we moved me out to WA, we had a trailer hitch put onto my Subaru. My Forester can tow a little, so we rented one of those little trailers. It really is easy to drive and I seem to remember the one way rental was about $200 from Lexington to Minneapolis. We towed a bed and frame, 2 chests of drawers and several boxes. There was plenty of room.

There was plenty of room. My last trip had 100 miles of packed snow on thick ice. The rest of the 600 miles was also icy. If it were summer, I would pull a trailer. I'm not going to pull one over the ice. I had also priced it and the smallest UHaul trailer for a one way trip was over $500. I assume because I would be leaving it in a really rural place and that tends to make rental more expensive than leaving it in a more populated area. I decided I am going to build a wooden rack this weekend for my truck's bed to give it some extra height and give me more room. I think that will allow me to move most of my stuff in one trip. I'm going to make a version of this:

If you can build that for yourself, badass points = badass points + 10 Thanks. I have the ability to see something in my brain, make a sketch for a parts list, and then build it. I used to think everyone did until I tried to work on a project with one of my sons... Apparently not. lol My truck actually has rail covers that don't have cutouts for the stakes so I made a Plan B. I bought some cheap lumber to build basically a cube frame that will sit in the bed with some cheap 1x6s to give the sides some stability. If I like the end result, I was thinking I could take it adventuring and tarp it so the tarp hangs over the outside of the bed and use it as a sort of homemade tent/camper shell. A bit redneck, but I think it just might work. It's supposed to be nice here tomorrow so I think I will get out a saw and have some fun.

That would be awesome if you could "do-it-yourself". Just don't forget to tie your stuff down. I cannot tell you the number of times I've seen stuff go flying out the back of pick-up trucks, or off of trailers, because the owner thought their stuff was heavy enough "not" to go flying out the back. Apparently, not enough people were paying attention in school to understand that "lift" can happen when you're flying down the highway...

I'll anchor my wood structure to the attachment points at the base of the bed. I'll have an inner tarp wrapping up the whole mess and tied well with rope, and then I will put another tarp and cargo net over everything to ensure all my stuff stays dry if I hit rain/snow. Hopefully everything will stay in place and make it to Oregon.

Shasta - thats a marketable skill. As you get to know new neighbors, maybe you can pick up some side projects.

Shasta - thats a marketable skill. As you get to know new neighbors, maybe you can pick up some side projects. I've previously considered offering handy-woman services. I think there's a market of women who would be more comfortable hiring a woman to do basic jobs around their house. I might look into that after I move. I received info from the title company today that the sellers are signing their closing papers today when they are in town picking up the few things they wanted from the house. As long as they sign and are still in agreement for an early close, we will likely close on Monday! The weather right now is good and it hasn't rained/snowed for the last week, so I am planning on moving Tuesday if things go as planned. How exciting!

Then I can ask about 1930's decor. I wired the cash today and both the sellers and I did our paperwork. I move Tuesday and arrive at my new house on Wednesday.
