My new property needs a privacy fence. It currently has 3' chain link that's not enclosed and that my dogs can/will easily jump right over.
My first quote came in today for the installation of a 300 linear foot, cedar privacy fence and to remove the 200-250' existing fence.
The quote was a whopping 13K.
Um, no. Just no.
I expected 7-9K, but not 13K.
I think perhaps his price had a bit of the woman's tax and small-town tax included?
At that price, I am considering electric fence or some other option.
And, no, it's not an option to split the cost with neighbors because there are some weird easements between properties that prevent sharing fences. (Which explains all the weird no-man's-land I saw in places where others had installed fences.)
The other option is to spend the spring building my own. Not really what I want to do, but I guess I could if I have to.

Many people in our community have the fenceless dog perimeters set up. I think some training is involved initially but dogs really stay in their yard even when walkers with dogs go past I don’t know the cost but likely it’s much less than that high amount for fencing

Is there a reason it needs to be a cedar privacy fence, as opposed to simply higher chain link (other than the obvious look). $13k isn't unreasonable for a cedar fence. Cedar fences can run about $30/foot, and installation at $10/foot. Wouldn't surprise me to see a quote of $10-12k for the fence itself, and another $1-2k for the fence removal.

To go from "needing privacy fence" to "electric wire" seems odd. Do you need privacy or just dog containment? I would go for chain link for the dogs over electric wire.

I have one dog that I think might be willing to take the electricity to get out and chase the deer or other dogs. She's really been a problem and was raised in an area where she could and did run free. I could also opt for a large kennel with some sort of fence into it from my back door. My dogs spend most of their time inside, including when I am not home. But, I really need them to be able to go out and use the bathroom without having to go outside with them in the middle of the night in the snow. I don't know about Oregon, but in CA it's illegal to tie them on a rope. While it wouldn't be for very long, I'd hate to have Animal Control welcome me to the state...

If your dogs will jump a three-foot fence, they will run right through an electric fence for something they really want. Then they won't want to come back in the yard, because they'll get shocked again when they pass over the threshold.

I'd ideally like the privacy of a backyard area. It's weird to me to live in town surrounded by other houses and not have a fence. Dog containment is necessary as is lessening their urge to bark. The area has a lot of deer and other wildlife, so I worry about them barking and trying to get out. I think behind chain link they would bark at everything they saw going by. But, a kennel with some sort of fencing leading to it all behind my house might be an option.

No it's not, it's illegal to leave them tied to a rope for an unreasonable amount of time, a quick search of California law suggests that time is 3 hours within a 24 hour period. If the only issue is using the bathroom, I'm going to guess they don't use the bathroom more than 3 hours per day if they're primarily indoor dogs.

There are a LOT of dogs that will jump a relatively insignificant 3-foot fence who can be contained by an electric one.

When I was a kid we had a chain that hooked onto our back door that ran along a clothes line in the yard. A 20 foot chain, and the dog had the run of a large area.

How about a doggie door from the house to a chain link dog run extending however far and being however wide necessary for the dogs to be able to go out for potty breaks and to exercise? Unless you want the privacy fence, too.
Are there any contractors in towns close enough that you can call for estimates? Surely there is more than one local person who can build a fence. 13K sure does sound like a heckuva lot of $$. Yes, you can do it yourself with a post hole digger and plenty of blood, sweat, and tears.
Oy.

Our neighbors spent all this time digging a trench around their yard to put in underground electric and their dog never cared about it at all. He just takes the zap and carries on with where he's going.

I actually liked the second guy more when I talked to him. The 13K contractor did a lot of mansplaining and seemed really narcissistic. Went on about how great "his" fences are and how no one else can build one like he can... Oy, indeed... The going rate for a cedar privacy fence is $20-25K a foot. I'd expected $7-9K but 13K is too high for me. At that price, I would rent an auger and do the job myself. I have all spring/summer. lol

I could run actual electric fence around the top of the chain link, but I'm not really a fan of electric fencing at all.

@shastasnewlife Mansplaining. Drives me crazy. What? We can't possibly be as smart and competent as they are?
I for sure wouldn't chance spending a king's ransom on an electric fence because once you've got it, you've got it and paid for it whether it works on your dogs or not.
BTW, have you moved in yet?

We just got daughter a car and the salesman asked out of curiosity why I dove to them instead of the closer dealer and I was like, you aren't a misogynistic asshole...

When he gave me directions on how to check a contractor's license online and verify the "other guy" isn't trying to rip me off, that was it for me... I'm not challenged and know how to use the internet. It's one thing to claim you build a superior fence and quite another to tell me everyone else is out to get me and can't build a decent fence, when you just quoted me $40+ a foot to build one... No, I haven't moved yet. I am in escrow and still staying with my mom. Escrow is set to close on 2/13 or sooner. Hoping for sooner, but it's still snowing up there every day so I will need to wait for a few clear days to move anyway. I plan to buy some rope and carabiners to use as a short-term solution when my dogs need to go out, but I really need to find a workable alternative before living there too long. My dogs aren't used to being leashed or tied and it's going to be a PITA until they can run free in the yard.

When I went to buy my truck I had on my usual uniform - jeans and a tie dye t-shirt, no jewelry, etc... My mom was nicer dressed with the usual jewels. When the finance guy came in to give me the final price, he turned to my mother and asked how she would be paying for the truck. I looked him in the eye and told him I would be paying - in cash. The look of surprise on his face was priceless. I was thinking "judge much?" in my head... lol

While you're at it, ask the second contractor about installing a doggie door. Hope you're out of escrow soon(er) and that there's a week-long thaw so you can start shastasnewlife.

Before I'd spend that much money for a fence, I'd buy a couple new leashes and take them outside myself. Problem solved.

He does get some interesting results when he tells them he's going to pay cash for his cars.

I'd go for a fenced-in or enclosed dog run with access to the house to start with. Then you could talk to your neighbors and get to know the local market for contractors and prices, etc., and have more information to make your decision about the fence. If you decided you wanted to do it yourself, you would not feel like you had to get it all done in one go because there would be accommodations for your dogs while you worked on it. You could even make the dog run out of materials you could then reuse in the fence as you built it.
I'm not a fan of electronic fences. I'm too much of a softie when it comes to dogs. They cause the animals real pain (even though "they" say it's just a "pinch" or whatever term "they" use to try to minimize it--"they" being the people selling you the electronic fence). They also do not keep other animals out of the yard. So dogs confined by an electric fence are still vulnerable to aggressive dogs and people who do not have their best interests at heart. JMHO.

Again, just my own opinion and perspective, but I would not choose to inflict a shock of any kind on a pet.

He'd set up house viewings with realtors or owners. Usually as part of the introductions with the realtor(s) especially if they were confused as to why I was there -- I would just say "Hi! I'm Tiny. I'm the Money. So, lets have a look at this house!"

There's a foot of snow on the ground and my dogs go out in the middle of the night. Walking them on a leash isn't a viable option. Well, I live in the suburbs of Milwaukee, and I do have a fenced backyard - but before I got the fence, my Dogs got in the habit of Mom walking them around the block. Even if we put them out in the backyard, one of my Dogs will come right back in the house and expect to go for a walk. So, I walk my dogs every night before I go to bed. If they want to go out in the middle of the night - I take them out. We go around the block...and I rarely even take my phone.
Our fence quotes were really high too. but digging fence posts is not an easy task. DH decided to do it himself, after we got some quotes similar to yours. We ordered the fence from home depot, and rented a hydrolic? post hole digger. DH and DS did the post holes, but DH said it was still a lot of work. DH brought in a landscaper guy he knows and paid him by the hour to get him started in how to install the fencing.
We did Aluminum. When we did our deck, we were going to do composite and chickened out on the cost, so we did cedar. We have a lot of regret on that. I would look at a composite/vinyl fence product.

What if you put a privacy fence up, but a smaller area? Maybe 20 x 20 or something?
