I actually had a similar conversation with him last night. Data science positions are everywhere on the job search web sites. He said he has applied to a couple of positions and has some friends in the field. I encouraged him to keep trying if that’s something interesting to him, he may find an employer willing to take a chance on him.

In the mean time, I think it would look favorable if your son was still working on gaining some data analytics skills. Even being a novice Tableau user would be better than not having those skills at all.
I left college as a generalist. There was still learning that had to be done. I was fortunate that folks were willing to allow me to do all my learning on the job. I think that's a luxury that doesn't exist as much anymore.

Would any of his friends be willing to refer/recommend him to the hiring managers at their jobs? I'm an engineer, and we are typically looking for mech, elec, or architectural engineers, but we'll interview and often hire chemical, industrial, or other types of engineers if someone refers them.

Is he networking via LinkedIn? There are numerous connections to be made there, considering LI has a user base of 60+ MILLION folks. 2/3 of my connections are people I know only virtually.

I need to ask him about that. I am not on LI, don’t really see the benefit, although I have more than enough contacts should I ever find myself in the job market again.

I haven't been in the job market for many years but many of my connections *are* and I help them out, especially fellow veterans and transitioning military members.
