This worked well for me yesterday. Nothing got super shiny clean or done up in house, but I also didn't fell like I was totally abandoning household responsibilities. Once again! With feeling! - yoga
- cleaning
- walk
- yard work
- cleaning
- yard work
I used my timer for the writing blocks, set to 45 minutes, allowed one pop-up break during the block to go to the bathroom/refill water and ok to cut that block short at the 30 minute mark if I was at a lull.
I did have a few crises with the writing. Wanted to clarify something - I analyzed this data so many times so many which ways, can't find the final output, can't find the final cleaned dataset I used, etc. etc. Been working on this since 2013 - have various files on laptop and across a variety of jumpdrives. That is a pain to figure out when I just want to double check one or two numbers. That is where I left off in disgust last night, lol!
I am digging into the paper more extensively than planned (as per usual!) redoing some dome diagrams, and I need to insert one section in the lit review, and spiff up another to the tune of about 2 paragraphs with additional research.
But - I am 100% committed to sending this out! This will be off my master todo list!
ok - off to the races!!

Went through the papers on the table that is serving as my desk. Filed as much as I could. Filing lead to purging of papers already in files, especially the "Misc Invoices" folder. I think I purged a stack of paper six inches high. I then went through three boxes of "framed pictures" to remove pictures of the former BFF from frames. I'll keep the pictures but the frames will be donated...eventually.
Watched a documentary on Netflix called Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things. It was a good reminder that I don't want more than I need. They have an ebook with some good tips in it. I really like this part about the stuff we keep "just in case":
The truth is we needn’t retain most of the things we hang on to. We rarely use our just-in-case items—they sit there, take up space, get in the way, weigh us down. Most of the time they aren’t items we need at all. And if we remove the just-in-case items from our lives, we get them out of the way and free up the space they consume.
They also talk about things for "just in when" which are the items that we'll definitely use, in time. Their example was along the lines of things like toilet paper: even if/when we have a surplus, we WILL get to it eventually.
Yesterday, I spent four hours writing the second installment of my moving adventure last year. If you're curious, my blog link is in down below. Part I was last year, leading up to Iowa; Part II is about my first week or so in Iowa. Many more installments to come.

I'm hitting a wall.... Not sure what direction I should go in life. Upset that my "sell everything and live in a van for a few years" escape hatch is off the table these days....

So DS1/DDLS/E/DS3 are here! It was not without stress. They decided to take the (tiny) guest room and put E next door in DD's room. But there wasn't enough shelf space so I had to create empty shelves in DD's room (which she was fine with).
Then DS1 decided (as he had mentioned, which has been stressing us out) that his bed (which was in the basement) is much more comfortable than the convertible couch in the (tiny) guest room. So DS1/DDIL/DS3 switched them: they put the guest room couch in the basement and put DS1's bed in the guest room.
I had a very strong gin and tonic at 5.55 pm. I was hoping to hold out till 6 pm but didn't make it. I actually had two.
We didn't love the idea of DS1 rearranging furniture but we want them to be comfortable. It also makes sense because E can be right next door.
At some point we'll probably put DS1's double bed in DD's room, and put DD's single bed in the tiny guest room. But we need to take apart her bed first, which is really difficult. We'll need a handyman.
All's well that ends well. It's wonderful to see them but I wasn't expecting them to move the furniture around.

I'm happy they arrived safe and sound.
I'm sure things will feel chaotic with so many extra people and a child in the house.

They do already TheO LOL.
This said, I DO get where DS1 is coming from. We've redone our bedroom, DS2's bedroom, DS3's bedroom. DS1 took the basement bedroom once he left for college, and obviously having a baby/small child sleep in the basement isn't an option.
DH and I talked. We're going to change things in the guest room to make them more comfortable. Since the couch went down to the basement tonight, the shelves with the video cassettes/VCR/old TV will follow, hopefully tomorrow. That will make the guest room more spacious.
I basically realized that the guest room has been frozen in time since DD and DS3 used to watch video cassettes there when they were little.
The other issue is space for clothes. There's a lovely chest of drawers in that room ... filled with DH's mom's stamps. DH has agreed to put the stamps in the basement if I get plastic tubs.
Once the shelves are gone and the chest of drawers is empty, the room will feel much more spacious/welcoming. I'll also get them two night tables.
All that is eminently doable, probably for under 100 euros (plastic tubs, two night tables and some elbow grease).
Plus that way, I'll leave DD's room as is. She likes it. She comes more often but rarely sleeps here since she lives 10 min away.
Let's see how much I can get done this week ...

I haven't posted in a while. I have been working on getting rid of papers, and doing pretty well there.
Other decluttering had stalled for a while. I called the town during the last large metal pickup, and got rid of a decrepit outdoor chair swing. I listed one item on Freecycle and it's now gone; and listed another today. Hopefully I'll get inspired to do more.

I am on a roll! DD and L are definitely moving out by June 15th. They'll have two other roommates both of whom I know well and am comfortable with. It's half of a newly renovated duplex and a perfect space for all of them. All paperwork settled with the landlord. Big check written and delivered.
I've been helping DD sort her stuff. Six kitchen trash bags of clothes have already been donated to a home for disabled residents. Out the door!
Two large totes of books have been sorted and culled to half a tote to keep and the rest will be donated to the library when it opens. There are a few more in her armoire behind her sweatshirt shelf but they'll easily fit in the appropriate tote even if she keeps them all.
I've gathered over 100 kitchen items (if you count plates and bowls individually) to donate to the new abode. Bye bye crockpot, coffeemaker, all the tupperware, three frying pans, two casserole dishes, a set of stainless steel mixing bowls, cooking utensils, mismatched silverware, dish towels, ice cube trays and many more assorted items. Still have glasses and mugs to go through.
While I was at it I reorganized the kitchen drawers and closet. I can actually access my casserole dishes and mason jars without having to move anything first!
That's enough for today. Especially since L is at work and DD went hiking because it's a beautiful day. I just worked on what I hope they see as a generous donation and I see as getting some of my duplicate kitchen crap out of the house.
ETA: When DD was a cheerleader for 10 years and we travelled to a lot of national competitions. She would invariably steal a towel from the hotel. It used to drive me nuts when I'd unpack. A long time ago I gathered them all up and hid them in a large bin under my bed. Viola...she has enough towels for herself and all her roommates.

Wow Malarky, they'll have a great start in their new place (and you'll have a lot more room in your house!)
The local big box DIY store has 5 big plastic tubs with tops for 26e (about $29). DS1/DDL/E are going into Paris for blood tests to confirm that DDIL had Covid. I'll leave when they do.
I have 2 goals for tomorrow. Ideally before they get back, but that's probably not feasible. If I can do one before they get back I'll be happy: - take the shelves downstairs, as well as the VCR/TV/DVD player - get the tubs, empty the dresser, put the stamps into tubs and take them down to the basement
DS3 has a paper due tomorrow, otherwise he'd have been very happy to help.
DS1 found makeshift night tables, so that can wait.

It has rained here all week, so our grass got a little out of hand in the yard. I finally got out there today to mow it, even though the real feel was 95. Of course, a storm started to move in as I was mowing so while I was thankful for it to cool off quickly, I had to stop 3/4 through because of rain. At least I was able to finish it afterwards, so now we just need to weedeat tomorrow.
I'd also like to get some veggie starts moved out to our container garden tomorrow. And finish planting the last of the flowers a friend of mine gave me (she ran out of room to plant them). Always game for free plants!

I am cleaning up and getting ready to leave for the other house to see my dogs and take a few days to rest. At some point in the next few weeks I am going to drive back east to look at houses.
Today is a mix of laundry and dishes and packing up a few things in my boxes. When I come back here I hope I can put everything into a POD to move.
I have made good progress on my quilt and it’s 20% assembled now. Each subsequent row can be laid out anywhere - I had to get the first half dozen done right and then I’ll follow my map for the rest.

Yesterday was paint outside day. I am so close to having one coat of color on the entire house but was too tired to finish the last little bit. There are places that already have two coats but it would be nice to say that at least the first coat is done. Today the kids brought my trailer back. It had been moved down there to free the driveway up for the various assorted workers and their trailers and vans etc. This morning I took a notion and was able to get two coats of paint on the baseboard section that runs behind the piano. Then when they brought the trailer back I was also able to get DSIL to move the piano back into place. The other furniture can be easily moved as needed to paint. I also got a second coat on the window in the office. Everything is moved back into place there and the drapes are hung back up. The office area is so crowded since it also contains all my fabric stash etc. It really is wall to wall furniture. Being able to close the drapes in the afternoon again will be nice since that window faces south.

19 My little ponies out the door. DD's daycare provider when she was little had every toy known to mankind. She put some toy stores to shame. When they retired for good and were moving out of the house they asked DD if there was anything she wanted. She wanted the ponies. I asked her today about the ponies and her response was I don't want those at my house and gave me permission to toss them.
ETA: Adding 13 assorted bouncy balls to the list of stuff being tossed this week.

I got all the stuff planted that I could (I ran out of potting soil). I need to get 1 or 2 more bags and I should be good to go.
I set up a decluttering sale FB group this weekend. My goal is to start listing all the stuff piled in my garage for sale (lots of clothes, random household items). I don't want to do anymore yard sales because they are exhausting. My mom, sister, and I usually hold a big sale once a summer but its gotten less and less profitable for us over the last few years. I chalk a lot of it up to me selling off all my "hot ticket" items and mostly having clothing left.
I also want to sit down and do some "decluttering" on our budget and finances this week too. It's somehow almost HALFWAY through 2020 now, so it's a good time for a quick re-eval.

ugh! this was a tough weekend for me, still not done with my writing work.
At about 4:30 last night - I said ok that's it wrap it up, looked up - it's 5:30, looked up 6:30 - then 7, 8, past 9. Still not finished! But getting closer every time, lol!
grabbed some dried cranberries, a banana, and some cold wet tofu with a bit of soy sauce for dinner around 9:30, watched about 2 hours of TV to try to unwind/destress, allotted myself a little less than 5 hours of sleep to get up and finish at a reasonable time to send off this morning - and still had insomnia. Maybe 2 hours of sleep all told.
And, you know, the regular day to day job thing today.
Getting to old for this! Rethinking life......
ok - back to paper before day job starts.

Quick pop in, things have been crazy busy here. Like my Dad used to say, Gd knew what he was doing when he gave little kids to younger folk LOL. It's tiring to take care of E all day but it's such a joy! Rukh, DS3 finished his BSc dissertation but still had 3 papers left. 1 down, 2 to go. DS1 + M woke up very happy with their new guest room arrangement. I decided to leave well enough alone. I talked to DS1, he said they'd rather keep the shelves/TV/DVD/VCR available for E, but that I'm welcome to empty the dresser of the stamps before their next visit, but no rush. Since they're going to my ex's for the weekend, I'll go to Ikea on Friday to get plastic tubs for the stamps before they get back on Sun or Mon. However I WON'T move the shelves/TV/DVD/VCR since they asked me not to. At some point I'll also get night tables for that room, but no rush. ETA: No results yet. They were supposed to get them today but they didn't.

I finished up my paper just now! oy. I've been thinking it had goodness in and in the last 15 minutes of polishing - had an epiphany and I think it's utter crap. Put in discussion that's when it hit me. yep - my study is worthless. should have done method x from the get go. Can't believe I sunk an entire 4 day weekend into this. Not to mention all the time I've spent over the years! Been working this data since 2013. Not part of a class. not part of my job. nothing.
Sent it along with my other sample and thank you notes. Lamest thank yous ever. Cuz - I've been trying to write a paper all weekend. Brain dead.
Time for me Heidi and Tim to talk making the cut on amazon. I need brainless entertainment and an early night.....
adding...
I will go over the paper again with fine tooth comb, and send to a journal. may downgrade the journal target. When I submitted the last paper they asked - has this been refused by another journal? but I'd be really surprised if I didn't get "method X, stupid!"
Well,,,,,thems the breaks.

Today after work I did some yard work. Last year I had a large sycamore tree removed which then changed the whole shade/sun dynamic for part of a flower bed along the back fence. The Astilbe and Hostas were not happy. Today I got them moved to the flower bed that is half under the overhang for my back deck cover. A lot shadier. Two of the Hostas already were looking pretty sad but I moved them. In total 3 Hostas and 1 Astilbe were moved. They all got a shot of fertilizer and a good drink of water and hopefully they will happy in their new home. It is supposed to be in the mid 80's in a couple of days.

This weekend I continued on organizing my "flower beds" and have reached the goal I set for this year. I finished mulching, bought some perennials that were on sale over the holidays, and moved more plants around.
I also had Hostas that needed to be moved from full-sun to a shady place. Earlier this spring I split a big one into smaller hostas and this weekend I split another Hosta. I put all them under the 3 giant trees I have in my back yard, gave recently moved Hosta a big drink and it perked up.
Now I get to focus on keeping all of my plants alive and enjoying my hard work by sitting on my deck and looking at my flower bed. I found this quote that sums up my feelings about gardening and why I get so much pleasure out of it.
Debthaven -- I was going to share a photo of the custom cubbies DH made. How do I post pictures on this site? I tried to upload a file and it looks like it has to be a weblink. Rukh, I'm sure the receiver of the thank you know will be happy that you took the time to write a thank you (and if you are like me, it is a major accomplishment to then get it in the mail). Good job!

I am keeping up with things and trying to make some progress. Today I had an earlier start than normal and manage to get both the garbage and recycling out before the pickups. Also got a load of laundry finished, paid the last of the monthly bills and got a few things done on the computer.
I am continuing to stay at home most of the time but did go to church this past Sunday. Everyone had on masks and social distancing was practiced by all. Figured if it felt uncomfortable I would leave.
I have been doing a lot of beading and have been working on writing descriptions and taking pictures for items I plan on placing on Etsy. Not uploading new items or renewing items until June begins as I don't want a bill for them yet. Figured I would do one or two items a week until I run out of items made that I can list. Trying to figure out a way to make most of them free shipping without raising the cost too much.
I am continuing to add to the donation boxes as I go though things. Done a bit of shredding as well recently. I have also pinpointed several items that I can donate to whatever fundraiser needs items. Some of these were gifts and never used. Several groups are usually asking for things as they plan the events so I will be giving these things away. My trash will be someone else's treasure.
Almost time for lunch so I will sign off now and try to get some things done this afternoon. Looks like a rainy afternoon is ahead of me and that may indicate a nap. So back to doing something before that happens.

Have you guys ever seen that meme that talks about how those at the lower-income end of the spectrum are more likely to hang to things just in case? Not that well-off people don't have a bunch of stuff. I guess they just have bigger spaces and places to keep it. But, how those at the lower-income end will keep the small 13" TV that still works even though they just got a new 32". And then there's those who have kiddos and want to give their kids everything they didn't have as a kid, which translate into literally EVERYTHING they didn't have. I see it in some of the people I know. They hang on to everything because they might need it but then don't use it for years. In the meantime, it got damaged and they ended up needing to replace it...but they don't get rid of the old one. And they're not hoarders. They're perfectly okay throwing away trash but the bigger stuff just hangs out for months, years, decades. I just want to get to a place where I'm not really storing anything. And I want to be sure that I buy a house that doesn't encourage it. So often, we acquire more because there's more room in which to put it. No matter if it's more closets or a larger living room. We fill a weird obligation to fill up the empty space.
Does anyone deal with that in their own mindsets? Reminding yourself that you don't have to fill up the space just because it's there.

Rukh O'Rorke -- Glad that you got the paper and thank yous off. Have you checked about library privileges I did, thanks for asking! It's a nogo unfortunately. Tried through advisor - who tried to work through department. Tried through library. Went to alumni org site and ordered a card for library privileges but it is only in person. I am hopeful that if I do go in person, I can access the online systems within the library and download all the pdfs off it. I don't want to go back to photocopies, lol! No one does that anymore, right? I can source the open access articles and can access some additional ones via researchgate where authors post their work. I guess I can get what I can on the street :^P and do a list of articles I can't and when I have enough that justify a trip, I can take one. Hopefully, library will be open at some point, they have been closed since March 20th.

Reminding yourself that you don't have to fill up the space just because it's there. it's a well known issue, i've seen it written about in particular about those who lived through the depression. And that reverberates through several generations.
