snapdragon My heart goes out to you. I am thinking about you and your dad and sending you so much love and care. There is so much to be said for hospice and palliative/end of life care. It really is full of compassion and I hope you find some solace in that. How is everyone faring from an emotional and mental health perspective right now? These are very tough times for a variety of reasons - fear of the unknown, fear of the known, isolation, job loss... Is everyone doing okay? TLDR of the below: I'm still employed, working from home, and trying to save extra money.I'm very busy at work right now (I am a commercial banker) and I expect to be for quite awhile. I do have some concerns about long term if there is to be a recession, but for now I'm employed and my job is not going anywhere. I am mandatory WFH for the indefinite future and I have been home for a month already. On the downside I'm not getting any expenses reimbursed and on the upside I'm not really spending much money beyond my fixed expenses. I've been reviewing my budget for the last few days to evaluate where I can likely make some cuts and can probably save an additional $350 in April due to being home, at the rate we're going maybe May too - it's not much in the grand scheme of things, but it's something. I feel like I need to beef up my savings to be ready. I did take my car to get serviced two weeks ago and there is a very tiny leak in the thermostat housing which will likely cost ~$1400 to fix. Good thing I put $1500 in my car/moto maintenance account huh? They said I can get away with it as is for several months given it's not a real leak yet (they found some residue/gunk) and my car is not being driven. I didn't raid my Vacation slush fund this month as expected because even though it was before a lot of restrictions were in place, I cancelled my trip to Mexico for my friend's wedding. I got a credit for the flight which means a future flight will be covered and I was able to return my dress. So I still paid out some money but got some back too and didn't really touch that money. My September trip may also be pushed to Spring. So the plan is to forge ahead with my regular savings plan and save a little extra where I can. Right now I'm at 54% of my goal for the year! I truly hope everyone is well. idlechatter 3/31/20 $16,247.03 (Goal:$30,000), WIRS3 Savings Account | Goal | WIRS Start 1/19/2020 | 3/31/2020 | Difference from WIRR Start | Remainder to Save | Emergency | $4,000.00 | $0.00 | $1,000.00 | $1,000.00 | $3,000.00 | Car/Moto Maintenance | $1,500.00 | $4.80 | $1,500.95 | $1,496.15 | -$0.95 | Christmas | $1,200.00 | $3.09 | $1,200.77 | $1,197.68 | -$0.77 | House | $1,000.00 | $0.47 | $0.47 | $0.00 | $999.53 | Car/Moto Purchase | $1,200.00 | $0.00 | $300.45 | $300.45 | $899.55 | Dad (long term) | $1,000.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $1,000.00 | Vacation (slush) | $4,500.00 | $2,300.00 | $3,500.00 | $1,200.00 | $1,000.00 | 401K | $15,600.00 | $550.00 | $8,744.39 | $8,194.39 | $6,855.61 | Total | $30,000.00 | $2,858.36 | $16,247.03 | $13,388.67 | $13,752.97 |

Tobinikui: $23,951.43 on 4/3/2020 (Started w/ $0 on 1/1/2020; Goal: $91,260.00) Not a ton of movement since about 2 weeks ago when I first signed in for the year. We did have some automatic savings go through on the 1st. I filed our taxes yesterday, and set up the debit to go through in early May. I am thankful for the extra time to save. We owe a big chunk this year. Hopefully the little we get back from the state will come in before the federal withdrawal goes through - that'll lessen the sting a bit, at least. I'm also not tracking the saving we're doing to foot that federal bill here either, so my "attention" is a bit split at the moment. With life as it is now, I'm trying to cut back on all unnecessary spending. Daycare is closed for the month and I am working from home, so it will be nice to not have that bill this month. I may even be able to get a month "ahead" on that bill, which would be a nice little silver lining. I hope everyone stays healthy, and can manage to stay somewhat centered in all of this.

Dad passed on his terms on Saturday. Everything is really up in the air right now for me. I am now working 20 hour weeks but my job is safe. Work is sharing the cost with UE on this one. My kitchen has been stalled so not sure when it will be finished. I am holding on to money just to be safe. There is the possibility that I will end up using some or most of my semi-liquid funds to pay the bills. It has been too cold to finish painting the dining room but it should warm up enough next week so that I can do that on my work days off. Everyone take care and be safe. Snap~ Condolences, snapdragon.

I'm not sure what to say about updates......I've been continuing with the minimum 401k - but all the funds invested this year are sitting at a huge loss....so do we just record what we put into it? I guess I'll do that.....

Wow, what a difference a month makes. And I'm not talking only about savings. We just finished our third week of 100% telework. We have a skeleton crew at work, doing things that management has not figured out how to have us do from home. I thought I was putting on weight because I was eating all.the.time. Plus, the wine. I weighed myself this morning and found I have actually lost a few pounds. I think it's because I am eating more regularly (breakfast, lunch, dinner) rather than starving all day due to lack of time and planning. And then coming home and eating a bigger dinner. And I am getting more sleep. Instead of setting the alarm for 4:30, I wake up when I wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and sit down at my work computer. Whether that's at 6:00 or 7:30 is no big deal because I have flexible hours and no one is expecting me to be at the office at any particular time in the morning (unlike when I have to go into the office). I have a freezer full of food that I've been buying and just shoving in where it would fit. My meal planning is based on what I have, with a few items added through Instacart. I am hearing absolutely heartbreaking stories from my daughter and son-in-law, who are on the front lines battling the pandemic in a big city that is being hit hard. The illness is bad, but the effect on people's lives is just awful. I was telling one story to my friend, and she said it was so very sad and there will be a million stories like that when it is over. And that is true. I am very lucky. I have enough to eat, enough money to pay the bills, and the ability to stay inside as much as I want to. So many people are not that lucky. Gratitude is my word of the day.

No real traction here, just the minimum. Will see if I can pay off the credit cards this month without carrying a balance and I will be happy. My big RI project is done and billed, waiting on the payment for that and hope there are no delays. I tried so hard to get it done more quickly, but I worked 7 days a week for 2 months and that was tough - I started to get slower so it took about 2 weeks too long... My job is so insecure right now. Our work functions were already slated to be outsources by next year sometime, - but now all projects are on hold - possibly though the calendar year and I'm not sure I can see a point to keeping us on especially in light of all the financial challenges the org is facing. And yet it is super busy trying to tie up all the documentation from last year. But once that is done. sigh. New vendor is supposedly going to offer us jobs, but their other projects are on hold right now too, maybe cancelled to years end as well. So - not too optimistic. Trying to hang on and roll with it. And the expected RI projects will also likely be cancelled. Not that that would get me very far, anyway. The 500 EF is looking pretty puny given all the uncertainty in the world right now. And my personal uncertainty. Retirement accounts are decimated so drawing on those now would compound the eventual impact on me. I apologize to those who are already experiencing reduced income, I know my situation is not so bad as yet. So - apologies on my debbie downer. I'm not really so low in the bowl mood-wise as my post might indicate. But I am achieving that elevated mood state by not thinking about finances and trying to ignore the mayhem outside the house! Which I have not left in 3 weeks. Have been in the yard a few days but not enough the days have been flying by as I work and work and work at the computer - was looking forward to alot of time out there but today turned cold and cloudy. When it was bright and sunny past few days I was working and could only steal outside for breaks....I continue to have symptoms so I don't want to venture outside my property lines out of caution for others.

bobosensei, 4/2/20, $5,332.97 (Goal $25,430)I feel like I'm catching up. I will be putting what I get of a stimulus check into my roth, and hopefully I will be able to put another 1500 or 2000 in it by the end of the month. I want to buy when the getting is good. I spent close to another 250 at Home Depot. I bought most of what I need to tile one of my bathroom floors. Only thing left I need is grout. I plan to do another bath if this one goes well. I started with a larger more awkwardly shaped bathroom because it is out of the way. But I plan to use nicer tile in the other so will probably be about the same amount of money. Some folks at work lost their jobs in the last few weeks. I also heard that all of the contractors are being let go. I don't expect any immediate impact, but I highly doubt we will get bonuses this year. bobosensei, can you do me a favor and add a tag line to your chart (and total up your savings) like I have done above? I can figure it out for you each month, but it saves me time if each Saver does it, and allows us all to recognize your accomplishments. Looking at your chart, with $0 Total saved and 0% saved, it looked like you were stuck at zero unless we looked at the whole chart. Thanks for your help.

And update on my savings from March. I'm spending slightly less money now that I'm WFH full time for the foreseeable future. Which is good for my wallet. I also had to cancel my April vacation, which is good for my wallet. The rest of me wishes this wasn't the case, but I'm trying to look at the positives.
March UPDATE
Current Goal Change
Savings/Efund. $7,818 $10,000. $200
Vacation Fund. $400 $3,000. $200
Total. $8,218. $13,000. $400
Flamingo, 4/5/20 $8,218 (Goal $13,000)

shanendoah [Q1]: $7,037.28 3/25/2020 (Goal: $5,040 3/31/2020) ROTH [Q1]: $5,500 3/25/2020 (Goal: $1,500 3/31/2020) Savings [Q1]: $1,537.28 3/25/2020 (Goal: $3,540 3/31/2020)
Sent another $500 to C's cousin. And now his hours are greatly reduced, so I did end up pulling money out of savings. But, the ROTH still got funded, and in a few days, we will have fully funded his 2019 ROTH in time. So in May, we will drop down to only $500/month going in the ROTH. Given the uncertainty of right now, I am going to set incredibly modest goals for savings for Q2. It just makes more sense.
shanendoah [Q2]: $0 4/6/2020 (Goal: $2,500 6/30/2020) ROTH [Q2]: $0 4/6/2020 (Goal: $2,000 6/30/2020) Savings [Q2]: $0 4/6/2020 (Goal: $500 6/30/2020)

March SHOUTOUTS Part 1 of 2: bobosensei Good work growing your savings $3779 in one month! You are right, buying into retirement investments when prices are down is a good opportunity. Have you done the analysis on the break even point of closing costs on the refi? flamingo Nice bump up for each your EF and your Vacay Fund. You are doing a good consistent job idlechatter 54% rocks! Good job trimming expenses, and squeezing out an additional $350/month. Thank you for the well wishes for all. It's wonderful to be able to support each other here, now more than ever. minnesotapaintlady You make an excellent point, it is hard to muster enthusiasm with the uncertain times, but our regular routines can serve as an anchor of sorts. I'm glad we have WIRS for connection and support. Another excellent savings month for you adding "pert near" $2700. (ETA: I find myself lacking motivation. Such a contradiction to have so much time on my hands but not accomplish much.) nikiz628 Good work with steady savings growth! I also noticed in your signature line you've accomplished 97% on a decluttering goal. You do a good job of finding balance between saving up, paying down, and staying current in other areas. paynointerest Congrats on a giant leap in savings of $11K!!! And achieving 45% to goal. plugginaway22 That was fortunate timing and prudent on your part to tuck DH's bonus into savings especially for now. I hope you are getting your rest, and am very glad your DH is managing on the Homefront. Did you decide about locking in the rate on the truck loan?

March SHOUTOUTS Part 2 of 2:resolution Good work weighing this all out as we go. It's painful when investments drop, but being able to buy "on sale" sure alleviates some of the pain. Nice new total of 8 Grand and 23%, very nearly that first Rukh O'Rorke _I hope the symptoms you had been experiencing have allayed. It's very conscientious, the care you are taking to distance. I also hope the weather in your area (where are you?) will allow you to "steal" those much needed outdoor breaks. Good work maintaining the minimums for a new level of $5115, and keeping a finger on the pulse of this and how it may unfold for you. Saving4Norway Congrats on nailing your 1st quarter goal, achieving 113% seriousthistime Your retirement timeline sounds great: end of year, or end of maxing your 2021 401K. I enjoy seeing you strategize your end game. And I'm super happy that your teleworking, and time at home, has worked out well so far. Congrats on $23875 and earning your 3rd star. shanendoah Awesome job in Q1 with 139% and $7037!! Congrats also in accomplishing that fully funded 2019 ROTH for C. A modest Q2 goal seems spot on. steph08 _Good for you holding the boat steady in spite of the $1K spent on the pump replacement. You are still well ahead of pace for the year tobinikui Hey there! Good to see you!! So sorry for the rough intro to 2020 you, DH, and kids have had. Hopefully you all can manage to stay healthy for a while amid the present difficulties. Congrats on 2 updates in March and being right on target with $23951 and 26.2%, on pace for a dancing banana If you had an update for March and are not named in this post or in the previous post please send a message. bobosensei, 4/2/20, $5,332.97 (Goal $25,430)I feel like I'm catching up. Will do!

Not entirely caught up on the financial front after DH's surgery (see chronic illness thread in off-topic), but here's where we stand as best I can tell. I was able to add $1538 after my check friday. Since our FMLA changed to run concurrently with PTO, I did not miss any checks like I expected. I also burned thru 15 days of PTO that I didn't expect I would have much rather been unpaid and could have easily weathered it giving our savings growth the past few years. I feel like I missed savings opportunities in Jan and Feb, but it was nice to just let the cashflow ride and not spend any energy on finances. I'm still not sure I didn't miss a bill or two along the way. DH has a bit more energy this week so will ask him to look things over for me. Mortgage got paid. Although I have to call them when they open because they didn't apply the funds correctly and also increased our monthly payment by $170 without notice. Doing the math, seems escrow for last year was sufficient, so I need them to explain. I'm pissy about having to add that to my to do list. Anyone know if I can get out of escrow without refinancing? I could totally cashflow insurance and taxes and am tired of being jerked around by escrow. I feel like with all of the eating out we've done to survive that we still have too much money left. If I didn't miss a bill or two, it's a sure sign that DH (and probably me too) were overspending on the credit cards that I do payoff every month. Both have held a $0 balance since 1/24. Need to talk to him about that and revise our game plan about cc use. $30,000 goal might be tight with a lost month, but I'm still shooting for it. We will be replacing DH's 2006 highlander before AC season which is $700 to fix and maybe worth $1500 with 225k miles. We're calling it done especially considering the one time I drove it through all of this, I learned the back window is down and won't go up again - nice to know when it's 20 degrees outside! We could prop it closed but then it'll be even more miserable without AC. He is going to look online at Carmax and Carvana for a used highlander with 100k to spend a max of $15k which will come out of savings but still leave a comfortable cushion since we have met our savings goal several years. Anxious to see bonus and raise. Thinking my raise may be unexpectedly good because I already got the notice for how much my employer paid life insurance death benefit increased. I can divide by the 2.5 times salary Azucena 2/24/20 $3173 of $30,000 goal (11%)Looks like I haven't updated since 2/24. Since things have been chaotic, I've given myself the luxury of ignoring finances except for what must be done like paying the bills. I'm not going thru the effort to recap the details but at a high level - I received my bonus early March and other than making our donation to the school building campaign, we are saving the rest for now given the economic uncertainty. We may end up spending some of it later in the year on house projects that we want to do. - we also completed our refinance for 2.5% 15 year mortgage. We are going without escrow for the first time so needed to pay about $3000 for closing costs and a year's worth of home insurance. Our monthly payment skipping April and starting in May will be $1700 instead of 1800, and with such a low interest rate, we won't be prepaying the mortgage as interest will "only" cost about $50k. - DH has been furloughed from his job as a preschool teacher. He is working thru the steps to apply for unemployment. Fortunately, my salary will carry us either way particularly as our spending is way down since we are strictly following the shelter at home. Azucena 4/9/20 $15,747 of $30,000 goal (52%)

Hey all!
Time for some savings goals again. Now that the house is sold and my CC balance is down to $4000 (which is considerably better than the $23,000 (on two CCs) that it was before the house enabled me to pay most of it off), I can put some focus on savings.
So, in order by which I want to save for first:
3-6 Months $6,000.00 $446.24
Cruise 2021 $8,000.00 $404.77
IRA-Rollover $120,000.00 $10,103.00
Total $134,000.00 $10,954.01
Saving for the Cruise: USAA has an autotransfer program that xfers money from my checking account to the Cruise account every other weekday. It's anywhere between $1-$9, depending upon how much is in the checking account so long as it's >$100.
Saving for 3-6 Months: I xfer $50 every 1st of the month into this account. When I get my CC under $1000, I will start making $500/mo xfers into this account and that should be in conjunction with the June 1st payday.
Saving for IRA: I just kind of picked an amount based upon 20 years x 12 months x $500/mo xfers. I know most people save for retirement for when they can't/don't/won't work any longer but I already get that kind of income from my military pension and disability so this amount will really be so that I can do withdraws later in life to keep up with COL increases. Really, though, I will deposit $500/mo every month for as long as I can.
I imagine there's some sort of tagline for my numbers but I'm not gonna use it. You don't have to track me. I just want somewhere to post for encouragement.
Anyone ever used Ellevest for investing?

Oops, I missed the March update. Very busy at work. In case I miss the end of April update, I'll do this now:

Keeping the workplace retirement savings steady for now. Cut back other savings since I spent a lot more than usual in March stocking up pre-lockdown (I'm under 3 separate stay-at-home orders - town, county and state ). Although I'm adding $500/mo to "ST to spend", I've been spending on insurance, registration, home maintenance, new freezer, etc, so my actual balance on that account is $2000. I won't have to spend out of it for at least the next few months (unless something major breaks in my house or car....knock on wood). The $420 to LT savings got that account to a balance of $12k, or 6 months of living expenses in case of job loss. That's in a "high" yield (using the term loosely) account at a different bank. I have another 3k in a MMA at my credit union where I do my regular banking. That's my emergency fund; the 12k account is my catastrophe fund. Hope you all are doing well!
