Update for May.
I'm thinking I might have to up my 401K goal because due to covid I stopped dependent care FSA contributions at $800 instead of $2000 and I need to keep AGI below 26K for college financial aid purposes. I won't worry about it now, but I'll file it away as something to look at in a few months. It's a very delicate balancing act because I don't know what my exact gross will be and I want to have my take-home be as high as I can get it without going over.
Fund | 2020 Goal
| Current | Needed | % Complete
| 401K | $15,000
| $9,397 | $5,603 | 62.65% | HSA | $7,100 | $3,080 | $4,020 | 43.38% | College | $1,900 | $1,000 | $900 | 52.63% | IRA | $500 | $500 | $0 | 100.00% | Pr. High School

MPL 5/28/2020 $14,777 - Goal $26,000

Hit my first EF goal for 2020! I am re-evaluating our budget for the rest of the year (like I do in June each year) and will determine the next goal for the EF then.

Is anyone else having problems with the smilies? If I'm on my desktop I can't see them, I just get a giant message from photobucket saying the image is not available. If I'm on my phone (I don't have Tapatalk so I just go through Safari) I can see the smilies.
When it comes to updating the May smilies, it won't work too well if I have to do it by phone.
Help? Anyone?

Double payday as both DH and I got paid. Since we're not going anywhere we are saving more even if you take into account the occasional online purchases. Added 1525. Azucena $22,811 of $30,000 goal (76%)Deposited $3,536. This update includes $400 tax refund and $870 in stimulus money that we weren't expecting because we figured that our combined 2019 salary was too high. Pretty sure it's based on 2018 numbers even though we had already filed for 2019. We clearly don't need it. Then, May is a 3 payday month so our healthcare didn't come out of my paycheck. Plus, we both got paid today. DH has been shopping for a used car for himself that will be about $15k from savings. Seems weird to pull the trigger when we're not going anywhere right now. Azucena $26,347 of $30,000 goal (88%)

Update: Resolution 05/29/20 $21,1000 (Goal: $35,000)I am a bit ahead of schedule due to receiving our stimulus payment and DH cashing out a couple of weeks of vacation pay. His employer was looking for a way to spend some of the PPP loan and asked everyone who was willing to cash out some time. The stimulus was on a debit card and I had a bit of angst before I figured out how to set up an online account and transfer it to my bank, but the money arrived safely in my bank this morning and is now on its way to Vanguard. Account | Goal | Saved YTD | % of Goal

Hey all! Time for some savings goals again. Now that the house is sold and my CC balance is down to $4000 (which is considerably better than the $23,000 (on two CCs) that it was before the house enabled me to pay most of it off), I can put some focus on savings. So, in order by which I want to save for first: 3-6 Months $6,000.00 $446.24 Cruise 2021 $8,000.00 $404.77 IRA-Rollover $120,000.00 $10,103.00 Total $134,000.00 $10,954.01 <snip> 3-6 Months $6,000.00 $1,015.26 Cruise 2021 $8,000.00 $538.34 IRA-Rollover $120,000.00 $10,443.24 Funeral Expenses $3,000 $100.00 TSP no goal $838.31 Annuity no goal $5376.27 (will be transferred to a different account Mar 1st, 2023) Total $137,000.00 $18,311.42

still minimums to 401k, another 1k extra added to EF. Have added automatic 250 to EF/pay period. Really want to beef that up before focusing on 401k. Will put in a small upgrade on the 401k though. Still have extra cash in checking from the RI payment. Looks like I will end up keeping that bonus payoff as a job I was pursuing isn't going to work out after all for the moment. So - that is a nice consolation prize. total was not updated, error fixed 6/12/2020....

Well this looks fantastic BUT, we did not go on vacation, our DS did not visit, we received stimulus $ this month (not expected), we are not paying down DH's truck because we would rather be holding the cash right now (HELOC @ 3%). So really, any goals I set in January are out the window and I don't know how to set any new goals. Just plan to keep throwing $$ into savings.
Another example of low spending, we would have taken our family out to dinner for a B-day and spent up to $500. Instead we virtually send a $100 gift card.
Both of our employers are using the PPP loan funds right now, but after that who knows. We are both in industries really feeling the COVID-19 hurt right now.
Hope everyone stays safe and well!

Y'all are doing SO WELL!!! I am admirable and a wee bit envious too. I've lost 4-5K in earnings this spring/summer because all the oral interviews at my business schools have been cancelled because of Covid.
The buyer of our studio backed out, but amazingly, someone else made an offer. It was a bit lower. We refused, so he went up to the original (low) offer. If the sale goes through, I will achieve my goal, and more! We should sign the first set of papers in the next week or two. Fingers crossed! So again, no update for me seriousthistime. If it's easier, feel free to take me off the list for now.

Decent month - should have been better, but we had to pay $500 for an appraisal for our construction loan and I had to pay my "mom bill" of $200-ish. My parents go to Sam's weekly and pick me up things that I need. Work had a good year, so they gave us an extra 3 or 4% into our 401ks, which I guess went in this month. Thinking of increasing the kids' 529s by $50/month to start on the 529 payback amounts.

I posted in off topic about our friend who died of covid yesterday, but I wanted to share some heartbreaking saving info with the savers.
friend was already retirement age and had some health issues. deemed an essential worker and required to go in to offices, even though their work could have been done remotely, and it seems company required office staff to go in to the offices for no real reason along with floor workers - they weren't set up for remote and refused to set that up? Or didn't want to differentiate across job levels? no known reason.
I found out yesterday that our friend had wanted to retire for the past couple of years, but continued working because the family was not ready for that financially. If only we knew, had some inkling, if only they had retired at the outbreak of covid rather than take the risk. But the financial pressures seemed too high. And now - the family is without that income anyway and it's just so painful to think of people risking their health, risking their lives for money and losing that bet. And the money pressures seem so pointless now. They would have had good social security payments, there was a way to live on those somehow, maybe with difficult choices. And there is no future money, no payoff on that risk, because friend is gone forever. Those difficult choices are going to happen for the family members anyway, but now even more painful.
So - I've been thinking about financial responsibility in a new light. Of course - who could have anticipated covid where walking out your door going to work or grocery shopping was a risk.
My savings seem a little lighter and my debts a little heavier today thinking about getting to retirement-ready financials as quickly as possible. But I can certainly say my health has suffered in the past couple of years due to work pressures, day job and side job, and then school for about 6 years - sometimes working 2 jobs. And I need to start making more balanced decisions for myself. I don't really know how to accomplish that, but I need to start thinking about this. My health can't be a throwaway that is the last consideration of my day - and it currently is - if it even comes up at all.
I don't really have any answers here, just asking questions of myself I suppose. Processing grief, thinking about my kids. Hoping we can all make better choices and be here for our loved ones as long as we can.

Rukh O'Rorke , thank you for posting the story of your friend. That's very sad. I'm sorry for your loss. Mind if I "make it about me" for a minute? As I've written here before, I hope to retire this year. Actually, I'd hoped to retire on February 29 of this year (leap day; leap into a new phase of my life). But then I got handed a big project at work before I put in my notice. I got done with that in early May, so I've been thinking of the new best time to retire. Finances are playing a part of that, but maybe they are playing a bigger part than they should. My doctor asked me if I was thinking about retiring and I said I couldn't just yet, there was too much work left to do. She said there'd always be too much work left to do, but that was not my problem. Years ago when I was barely an adult, I worked with a woman who saved all her life and had qualified for a hefty pension from working for the company for so long. She announced her retirement, and made plans to travel and enjoy herself. She had a fatal stroke three weeks before her retirement date. The Savers thread is all about money saved. Do we have enough? Can we do better? Do we feel happy when we manage to save more, and sad when life gets in the way and we only manage to save less, or none, or have to take from savings to pay expenses? I've said before that ALL savings are saved to be spent someday, even if that means in retirement 30 years from now. Savings gives us options. And let us not confuse "want" with "need." We'd all like to hit that "magic number" in our mind, but that's a "want." What do you really "need"?

Tobinikui: $33,440.95 on 6/1/2020 (Started w/ $0 on 1/1/2020; Goal: $91,260.00) Thank goodness for our automated retirement savings - that's the only thing driving our savings these days! We've also managed to save for and pay our federal income tax bill for the year, as well as adjust our with-holdings so that hopefully we should be pretty close to $0 owed next year. That was a big, and unexpected, hit this year. We are saving a good chunk of money on daycare expenses by being home. I'm pretty sure that the kids will be home until they go back to school this fall - in whatever fashion that ends up being. I'm anticipating it will be at least partially online - which I'm not thrilled about. So many unknowns. *sigh* I want "normal" back - but I'm not sure that'll ever truly happen again. On the plus side (maybe?), we'll get back about $1300 that we pre-paid for summer camp for our older child. We are spending a lot more money on groceries - food consumption seems to be the one "treat" we allow ourselves. And, I'm cooking from scratch a lot more. I'm thinking I will be able to speed up the Loan Repayment savings, from December to October, possibly, which would be really nice. We cancelled our vacation for July - it was going to be our first vacation as a family of 4, and we had also invited my older step-kids to join us as well. Alas - this year is not that year. I'm thrilled we were able to get our deposit back though. I have been trying to do work around the house. I ripped out an overgrown area by our back porch, of weeds, overgrowth, poison ivy, and just general neglect, and then measured, planned out, and planted several hosta, some flowering lungwort, and ground cover. I still had some space left, and so I ordered a dwarf lilac, a teeny tiny hydrangea (18" wide, by 18" tall!!), and a catmint plant. Those haven't arrived yet, but the hostas are sprouting tiny new green leaves. These are the first things I've planted as an adult that have grown! I am kindof obsessed, and very excited. I can't wait for the flowering shrubs to arrive. These are such strange times. I hope everyone stays safe, and healthy.

seriousthistime and Rukh O'Rorke, those are such great points. I'm sorry for the circumstances that make them front and center in your minds. I think we could all stand to spend some time in introspection these days. Rukh O'Rorke - I am sorry for your loss.

bobosensei 6/1/20 7785.61 saved for 25430 goal 30.62% All my races will be paused until I find employment again. In the mean time I am spending as little as possible. I cancelled 122 dollars in recurring bills every month, and I'm focusing on trimming my grocery budget as much as possible. I'm actually going to start budgeting instead of saying I have x amount of money left this month and can spend on whatever. I'll probably be popping into the no spending threads soon. As far as my paused goals I fully intend to continue the HSA goal even if my next employer doesn't have a HDHP. And I'm holding 1000 of the 1100 I saved last month for my roth, but I won't be contributing until I am working again. I'm keeping this money in a separate savings account, but depending on how long I am unemployed I may have to spend it.

Snapdragon Update 6-01-20 - $8234.98 / $9500
Car/House $ 3874.11 / $5000
Savings $ 4360.87/ $4500
New Totals $ 8234.98 / $9500
I hope to have savings topped off next month and than concentrate on the car/house account.
I am still waiting for paperwork so I can get approved by the court per Dad's will. I need to be able to sell things and sign paperwork which I am unable to do right now. His taxes are not signed and I need the courts approval before I feel comfortable on doing that. So I am freaking out a bit and am so thankful that I am able to pay his bills out of his account otherwise I would be up a crick and headed towards some gnarly rapids.
Everyone keep up what you can and stay calm.

May Updates Current Goal Change
Savings/Efund. $8,418 $10,000. $200
Vacation Fund. $800 $3,000. $200
Total. $9,218 $13,000. $400
Flamingo, 6/2/20 $9,218 (Goal $13,000)
I still need to up my auto savings a bit to meet my goal by December. BUT, I was able to cash flow the purchase of my new computer, so I held off upping the amounts in May. I'm not super concerned about it, if it takes me into next year to hit my ultimate goal, that's ok. I'm feeling pretty good about where I'm at right now.
Big hugs to everyone who needs them. This is a terrible time for many of us for so many reasons.

In this time of Covid19 what do you really need might not so much be about money but more about lifestyle as in what will I do if the SIP will be extended or come back in the fall?.Can I handle being locked in my home without the structure a job provides? I hsve been in a financial position where I can retire whenever I want to. So my plan was once I reach 70( less than 1.5 years from now) or I have had enough of this job. That has changes to not before this crud is under control. For now I need the structure of work in my life. So my question to you is, do you know what your life will look like retired in this current situation and is it something that looks attractive to you? Only when you can answer that question should money become a primary consideration again

Saving4Norway (Q2) 6/2/20 $7,000 (Goal $3,003) I think I may have been flip-flopping more than a fish out of water when it comes to deciding how much, and where to keep my Early Retirement fund!! And it doesn't seem to have much to do with the crazy going on all over. For the third time in 9 months, I've "made up my mind". Ha ha ha. We'll see how long that lasts.

Saving4Norway...let us know when you decide about that. My Early retirement fund is in an online money market account earning 1%. I am sure there is something better but I want extremely low risk for this money.

I think I may have been flip-flopping more than a fish out of water when it comes to deciding how much, and where to keep my Early Retirement fund!! plugginaway22what is the purpose of these funds? in terms of how many years of retirement are they meant to cover? that would inform asset allocation - as well as how far off the inital early retirement date is.

Right now we have about 1.5 years worth of expenses saved and we are looking at it as a bridge to SS income and Medicare. Our 401ks, roths, IRAs are separate. We have also cash flowed any minimal healthcare costs and let the HSA build.
