I thought having armed people would stop shootings? I'm assuming firearms are readily available on a military base.

Maybe not stop shootings, but allow others to bring a quick end to the attack. Seems like an armed attack at a location full of people trained how to use weapons is nothing more than a suicide mission.

So, you are no safer on an military base than in an elementary school, or a concert, or a movie theater.
But you are less safe on a military base than if you are in Europe.
Good to know.

No, not all military personnel are trained with firearms! No, not all personnel on a Navy base are allowed to carry firearms!...at any time on the base! My son is retired Navy. He never got trained nor had access to any personal sized weapons during his entire time served and he was in the first Gulf War! He was trained with some weapons attached to ships & boats, but training exercises where the only time those were fired when he was any where close to them...like aboard that ship or boat...other than when his boat hauled out into the ocean..targets for the air force planes to practice on...which btw, they missed hitting big, old, stripped ships...I'm talking BIG targets & the air force guys never hit a one all day long. Son's boat had to haul them back to the scrap yard when the air force was done for the day....this was in Hawaii!, next to Pearl Harbor.

Last I heard, military bases are gun free zones.
Now we have more shootings.
Don't understand how that happens, when there are no guns

My grandson is currently working security at a naval base - I'm really concerned.

Yes they have security, and the MP's are armed. Like a school zone protected by civilian police, there is the inherent fail, when they can't be everywhere at once. Making a military base a gun free zone, means that only the rule abiding servicemen won't be armed. My previous post was a little bit tongue in cheek.

MP's are not everywhere on these bases. They are responsible for gate and perimeter security for the most part. Not sure how much NCIS staff is on duty there. If the base is physically large enough they may have roving patrols. I am not sure as I was in the Army, and MP's patrolled the streets for traffic enforcement etc, but unless there is a top secret building on the grounds they probably do not man the entrances to the inside. Not sure about the Navy, but the individual vessels have their own security staff. Since this attack happened at a training facility building, there probably would not be security on staff at the building and security at the gates would not be leaving their immediate gate posts unless ordered to do so.

Most bases are drive on. Depending on threat level, they do full vehicle searches on some cars. When I worked on a military base for 3 years, I think I got searched twice.
Also gate security is almost always contracted out.
