I would do some research because I think at least one of their models still has metal gears. That would be the one that I would get. My understanding is that most of them have plastic parts now and they won't last as long.

I have an Artisan. I've always had problems with it bouncing around with pizza dough or bread dough.
It also lasted about a year before the part that locks the head down broke, so I have to stand there and manually keep it down while it's running.
I'd go bigger because the larger ones are easier to use and spatter less. However, just the Artisan is too heavy to keep putting on/off the counter. If I had to do that, I'd probably never use it and I hate countertop clutter.

I don’t know which one I have. It’s tucked under my island and weighs a ton. I rarely use it, relying instead on my trusty Kitchen Aid hand mixer for the nearly daily baking I do (muffins, cakes, cookies, etc.). I also make bread and pizza dough often, but, honestly, kneading bread dough isn’t difficult and if you do it just a few times you quickly get a feel for when the dough is ready. The only time I really use the big ass stand mixer is for a particular frosting recipe that needs to be mixed for 15 minutes. Just my personal experience. Your mileage will vary.

I've had the classic model for over 20 years, loved it, and made bread with it many times. But a few years ago I treated myself to a 7 quart pro series (it has the kind of bowl that raises and lowers). It's fantastic for double batches of things. The bowl can be just a wee bit big for a small amount of something (I still have my old mixer) but I mostly use the 7 quart for everything.
"This is the largest, most powerful, but quietest KitchenAid stand mixer available. The generous seven-quart-capacity mixer has commercial-grade, high-performance features for efficiency and high quality results every time you use it. The 1.3-horsepower motor mixes and kneads quietly, and features ten speeds from slow stirring to high beating. The commercial design includes bowl lift and metal knobs, and the mixer’s planetary action allows attachments to spin independently while making continual rotations around the bowl for thorough mixing. The polished seven-quart-capacity stainless steel bowl has a comfort handle and plenty of room for all your needs. The professional-grade elliptical whip attachment has 11 stainless steel wires that operate 33% faster than typical whips for optimal aeration of egg whites or cream. The mixer also comes with a flat beater and dough hook. Makes up to 14 dozen cookies or 8 lbs. of dough. The commercial power hub works with all KitchenAid attachments. Hand assembled in Greenville, Ohio, home of KitchenAid since 1919. 7-qt. capacity. 25 lbs.; 16¼" h x 14¾" l x 13¼" w. Work bowl is dishwasher safe, wipe machine and attachments clean. Made in the USA. "

I inherited Mom's Classic model.
I use it constantly, and make pizza dough in it often.
I haven't had problems with it walking off the counter, but noticed it will bump along at high speeds. I never go to those high speeds unless I'm making whipped cream or butter, so it isn't an issue.
It is perfect for my needs, which are primarily making pizza and pasta dough, and occasional desserts.

I've had mine for probably20+ years. When we bought it hubs said do you need something that expensive, how often will you use it? I have used the heck out of it. Some of the attachments now are starting to split they have been used so much. It has the bowl that raises and lowers also. It's still going, hope to keep it till I can no longer cook. But I bake stuff. Don't make bread often but when I do I use it for that too.

More expensive than the others posted, but Bed Bath and Beyond has it in Espresso and Cobalt. Shamelessly sent that to DH. Beautiful. Does it look that good in person?

Opti, I'm not sure. I've only seen it online. Didn't get it for Christmas so I'll just be watching for sales.

I saw a similar one at BB&B this week and it does look like that IIRC.

After this popped up on the list, there have been at least 3 fairly new Kitchen Aid mixers go up for sale on Bristslist. One looked identical to the one we have and they want $75 for it (we have the 6 qt Professional model).
