My team just did our annual holiday outing today - we did ax throwing; which was a blast. We’ve previously done things like lunch out, lunch catered in, Whirly ball, Main Event, etc. I know some other teams who have done or are doing escape rooms, go carts, scavenger hunt around the city, etc.
The week before Christmas is treat week, so most of us bring in treats (usually homemade) to share with our teams. We are going themes, so one day is breakfast, one sweet and savory, one is happy hour, etc.
The company holiday party is a Saturday in January. I haven’t heard where this year’s is yet, but they rented out a local Main Event the last 2 years. It will include dinner and an open bar, plus some sort of entertainment. If it’s Main Event, we can bowl, free use of arcade games, laser tag, ropes course, etc. One year it was the College Basketball Experience. Other years it’s been a catered dinner with a band after.

Prior to 2 years ago we had a catered lunch.
The last 2 years have been a potluck. The first year I did not attend since I was off of work dealing with getting my DF to doctor's appointments. I attended last year. (It is held in the hallway outside my office). Have to figure out shortly if I am attending this year as the pot luck is next a week from today.

That party was a blast! Food was meh but fun gambling with play money , they gave you money just for helping them shuffle the deck! Great band with excellent dance music. Great drinks, two being free. Glad I went. Also a photo booth. With funny props!! The deal for employees was they got out of work two hours early, paid for, if they showed up. Only two did but all left early. Dumb move.

No office parties for me, mine is a church Sunday School class this morning. Lets of brunch goodies and a $5 gift exchange. Personally, I'd just as soon stay home.

Leaving for my company party in 30 minutes. I’ve been on my feet all day and they are hurting. Hoping there is seating for dinner early in the evening. #oldpeopleproblems.

Back in the 90s, Kaiser used to spend tons of cash on catering and parties. The holiday bash would be huge and well attended because it had an open bar.
One year, the housekeeping manager got completely shitfaced and made a total and complete idiot of himself. It was the talk of the company for years. It completely obliterated his reputation and was used as an example of why people should never drink to excess at a work function.

My company does a Christmas Brunch at a local venue. It is on a Saturday morning and family & kids are encouraged to attend. We have a Santa that shows up after we eat to pass out presents to the kids. Afterwords if people really want to go they can go to a local Christmas tree farm and the company will pay for your admittance and tree as long as it's under a certain height. I used to do that but haven't for several years now.
Way back in the dark ages it used to be on a Saturday evening and the x-mas trees were loaded into a school bus and several people got rather drunk so they stopped doing night parties.

I always tell people at new jobs how my old job operated (I may have shared this before). I worked at a mutual fund & insurance company. The holiday party started at noon on a workday down in the conference rooms. Drinks and food were unlimited, but because we were very busy it was expected that people would go down in shifts for an hour to the party, then go back to work. That meant plenty of times people would go down, drink for an hour straight, then go back to work processing people's financial transactions.
After about a decade of this, someone finally had the thought that perhaps large amounts of alcohol, impaired judgement, blurred vision, and handling people's money might not be a great combination. They changed it to 2 drinks per person, and once you went to the party you could not go back to work (which is interesting, because in the company handbook you can have 2 drinks at lunch every day and still return to work).

Graduate school holiday parties were sometimes pretty wild. Shooting champagne corks down the hall, police showed up once because someone was trying to Hotwire a car in parking lot and perpetrator said it’s ok someone at Biochem dept told him to. Always fun were the outrageously anatomically correct gingerbread cookies. Lots of ethnic potlucks but one Asian guy just brought in a can of leechees and took the top off. Once an interactive ‘game’ of what doesn’t anyone here know about you (someone had a top secret clearance, he was a real screwup) stopped after a guy said ‘My mom used to beat the sh#t out of me’ Faculty and students sometimes hooked up in a lab

Since we left pretty early, today at work got the lowdown of the people who overindulged on the free drinks. Just 2 guys and some minor misbehavior. Nothing too juicy.

We used to have our holiday party in December. It was lunch at a restaurant. The company rented a private room, we had a sit down lunch with different options we had to order in advance. Beverages included for free. A couple of years ago they changed it to January saying employees are too busy and stressed out during the holidays to enjoy it. But it was during work hours, generally at 1 pm at a nearby restaurant. We had the rest of the afternoon off. I don't attend anymore because it now takes place when I'm away on vacation. Although there was free booze I only saw one person get drunk. She got really drunk and it was embarrassing to watch. But other than that person, everyone else had a beer or a glass of wine and that was it.

We went to TD’s office party last weekend. We were wondering if we should go because this is his last week working there. As it was in a very nice restaurant, and we had RSVPed yes, we wound up going.
It was a good bunch of people, and even though they were his coworkers, I enjoyed myself. Excellent meal, and we all got 3 drink tickets, but there were tickets leftover on the table....no one overindulged.
I need to remember this restaurant when we go out. It is just a little off our beaten track, and it’s a place where you just don’t drive by it, you see if to specifically go there.

Since I’m new I asked some coworkers about the dress code. They said this is first year it is being done at the site. So one asked the HR manager and was told “slutty casual”. WTF 😯. "Slutty casual". I think I'd have to go shopping for that one! Two really memorable Christmas/holiday parties at work: In my first job I worked for a sub of American Financial Corp. and every year we went to the Cincinnati Ballet performance of The Nutcracker with a buffet dinner afterwards. They still have the best "Enchanted Christmas Tree" I've ever seen and I've been to performances n Chicago, Lincoln Center and KC since. My last employer was a "work hard, play hard" environment- an insurance brokerage driven very much by the sales culture. We had the holiday celebration at a nearby hotel and it started around 11 AM, except that every department really started its celebration as soon as people arrived in the morning, dressed to the nines ("Slutty dressy" was common) and started in on potluck offerings, which always included booze. Then on to the main party where the open bar was waiting. There were some after-parties in the local pubs, too. They handed out taxi vouchers the night before, which I thought was very good risk management.

Our company party Saturday night was very low key. Dress was 'Sunday go to meeting' type, and spouses and kids were invited also. We received bonuses (mine was $1500 as a part-timer) and I don't know what others received.
The contest was 'count the total pieces of candy in 5 jars', and the winner got $500. Wasn't me but I won the first drawing for door prizes. It was the biggest jar of candy. DH and I went through it Sunday afternoon and there were 7 different kinds of candy in it. I took it to work Monday and it totaled 11.5 pounds of candy. We kept a small amount and I left the rest at work for everyone to enjoy.
No one even acted like too much to drink and we were home by 8:30
We are very dull people ....... but we had a lot of laughs.

One of the things I like most about my current company is that we don’t do these things. We sometimes go out to lunch together, but that’s it.
At this point if it’s not during work hours, I’m not going. And in my experience, the shittier the company the bigger the deal they make of the extracurricular activities.

And in my experience, the shittier the company the bigger the deal they make of the extracurricular activities. absofuckinglutely. the train wreck job of last summer was spectacular about their "summer outing" and holiday party. summer outing was at a venue that is typically used for wedding receptions, right on the beach. lavish buffet with a couple drink tickets, and a whole host of beach games for after the meal. holiday party was the week after I left in January, at another venue typically used for weddings - a hotel that has picturesque grounds and a pond in the courtyard. this would also be the company that didn't do bonuses and paid lower than industry standards, but isn't terribly forthcoming about those details.....and then there's the general shit show of operations and (this will go poof! soon) the call I ended up making to the FDA after I was gone.

My new company is hosting a holiday luncheon tomorrow. Getting Italian catered. Going to be interesting to see how this works because we aren't supposed to eat at our desks, snacks are fine, meals are a no-no. We are supposed to be doing shifts so it should be interesting.
