My outdoor security flood light burned out so I went to the store and in 10 min bought one. It said "Outdoor security 120w LED 13w LED Par 38 flood. 22.8 years life*. Notice the asterisk. Didn't read the package fully.
When I got home I installed it and that is when I noticed the back of the package said "22.08 yrs life based on 3hrs/day". Who leaves a security light on for only 3 hrs a night? Defeats the whole purpose of a security light.

I think all big claims like that on lightbulbs are crap.
I disregard those claims. But I no longer buy lightbulbs from All A Dollar. The ones I've used lasted about 1 yr, compared to multiple yrs, if I bought them elsewhere. (Different brand)
It's frustrating.

Change to sodium lights. You will need to do fixtures but the bulbs last for years. Same type As street lights I never turn mine off and have not had to change bulb in 7 years

I've learned, the hard way, to avoid any lightbulbs manufactured by GE. They're always the first to burn out at our house. Other brands last longer. Lesson learned.

My outdoor light is motion activated. 3 hours a night would be more than sufficient.

I think that 3 hours a day is a "standard" so you can easily compare bulbs. That said 22 years * 365 days = 8030 days. 8030 days * 3hrs per day = 24090 hours of light bulb life. If you set it to be on 10 hours a day - you could expect the bulb to last 2409 days or 6.6 years. I think that 6 years is the approximate "how long it lasts" for most of the low energy bulbs like CFLs and LEDs if you have them on each and every day. Perhaps my math isn't correct. I have a table lamp on a timer that's on a minimum of 6 hrs per day (usually 9hrs during winter months) year round. I've used CFLs in it for decades. I usually get about 5 years of use out of the bulb (at bright light) CFLs seem to start dimming as they get old/die. Since I'm using the lamp for "ambiant" light - just so there's a light - I don't change the bulb until it's really a low golden glow. usually about 6 years of bulb life. I haven't had LEDs long enough to determine their typical life with my typical usage. (I've got some incandescent bulbs in closets and the attic that are 20 plus years old and still going strong... of course they are on for mere minutes each month...
