DH managed not to talk politics with his DS. So Thanksgiving was almost peaceful, except for my SIL telling DH that she didn't like watching professional basketball on TV. She said she wasn't racist, but she didn't see many white faces on the court, and she didn't like that.
Pretty much when someone feels the need to tell you they aren't racist, they are being racist, I've found.
DH said the coaches would probably play purple and pink players, if they were good, and my SIL said that she was certain there were good white players, but the black players got all the spots on the team because the coaches are prejudiced against whites.
This is the same SIL who told me I shouldn't let my kid go with our church on a mission trip to Mexico because there are 'plenty of poor people in our (white) neighborhood to help.' (No, I don't think anyone in your neighborhood lives in a garbage without running water or a toilet).
Well, it's not the holidays if you don't have the crazy uncle or the racist SIL present to make everyone else roll their eyes, I guess.
Huh? I don't really like to watch pro basketball, but I don't care what color the people are. I don't understand why it even matters,. I don't either. You would have to ask SIL.
Something about the persecution of the whites.

Then I guess she should stick to hockey.

Did I miss something? I don't recall ever having even noticed what color the players are. Is there supposed to be a quota? Kudos to your DH for not talking politics, but SIL's remarks about the color of the round-ball players? Maybe religion would have been a safer topic.

I don’t know. When DD was in PA school they wanted these kids to spend 2k going to Haiti and helping them. I told her go to Appalachia and help them first. I’m a fan of cleaning the log out of your own eye before helping someone else with a speck. Or the inner city free clinic. We have a lot of people that need help right here. Put on your own life vest before you help another. Comparing a poor person living in a Mexican landfill, without potable water and toilets, collecting recycling out of the rotting food and rats living there to even the poorest person in my SIL's neighborhood is like claiming a splinter requires just as much care and attention as an amputated finger.
Sure you should donate to your local charities and help out your immediate neighbors, but that doesn't mean you can't also try to help more distant humans struggling with even greater issues. And believe me, seeing someone digging through a smelly rotten trash pile to find anything recyclable leaves a much deeper impression on a first world teen than visiting a trailer park in the Appalachians.
Teens think everyone lives like they do - at least I did, as a teen. It's good for American teens to realize just how fortunate they are, compared to most of the rest of the world.
If coaches were prejudiced against whites, the coaches, assistant coaches and support staff would be much, much more colorful. But, they are predominately white.

Would she be ok with her kid sitting through a Jewish prayer? Buddhist? Quaker? Would we need to have a committee to come up with the proper generic prayer no one objected to?
She said a protestant prayer, of course, because most of the kids in her community were protestant. I asked her what would happen, then, if we had a sudden influx of Catholic kids, would we now use Catholic prayers?

Dh and I have a rule about no religion, no politics, no segue ways into race relation, immigration, liberals, conservatives, conservative radio talk show hosts, Northerners, gun control (she has an open carry permit, but doesn't own a gun - don't ask), working moms, poor people, Walmart (don't ask) and health insurance. Now I guess sports are on the list, too.
We mostly talk about our kids. That's pretty safe.

Family like that I think its best to just not invite.
I had an Uncle like that. Ruined every family get together. He and my aunt finally moved away, within a couple hours so still close enough to come to get togethers but somehow the invites just never got to them being so far away and there was very little contact for about 10 years.
They're back now, but sing a very different tune. Biggest regret everyone has is not cutting him off sooner.

If coaches were prejudiced against whites, the coaches, assistant coaches and support staff would be much, much more colorful. But, they are predominately white. Why? Just because a coach is white doesn't mean they don't have a preconceived notion that black players are better than white players. In general in basketball...black players are seen as more athletic, white players are seen as more fundamental/smart (not just in basketball, football quarterbacks would be another example of this exact line of thinking). And some of that is pushed forward by the very people you talk about, white coaches...who were often white players...and who often pride themselves as being "less athletic but a higher basketball IQ" than their contemporaries. There's also a pretty widespread idea among coaches that they can take super athletic players and "make them smarter" but that making a player more athletic by the time they're at a high level isn't going to happen. It almost definitely happens on SOME level...but realistically the level it happens at is who is the last guy on the bench...not the guys you see on the court much.

Let me revise that. I don't NOT see, but neither to I count to make sure there are "enough" or "not enough" not just in basketball, in any sport. It's one of those things that just doesn't seem to matter.

It's one of those things that just doesn't seem to matter. Maybe it's because basketball is entertainment...but I wonder if the same people are checking kitchens at the places they eat, or scoping out the garbage truck coming to take their trash, or the local road crews to see if they have enough white people employed and if not they just skip it. "I'm not racist, but I just don't like eating at the local Mexican restaurant, there just aren't a lot of white faces when I look into the kitchen".

I see that Her Royal Omnipotence, Cruella De Vil, finally deleted her unwelcome and pompous post, so I, in the spirit of fairness, deleted my response to her. Unfortunately, it took a minute to remember that hers was embedded in my response so deleted that just now, too. It's not like she wasn't forewarned; leaving it there as long as she did was her own choice. I did succeed in blocking her yesterday, and thanks to those of you who gave me the how-to instructions. As you were... Because name calling isn't mean as well? She posted her opinion here which you disagreed with. That's what happens when you post life details on the internet. Your blatant attack on her and subsequent name calling wasn't much better. And what exactly was she warned about? Are you now threatening her too? Feel free to block me all you want too if that's how you interact with people.

This reminds me of a discussion we had in the lunch room a few years ago. When I came in they were discussing whether gay men should be allowed to adopt kids. This one guy was sitting there full of fire and brimstone arguing how it was not just against "God's will" but it was not natural and he knew for a fact that two men would not be able to properly raise kids without a woman. My one and only contribution to the discussion stopped the whole thing. I told him that he better pray that nothing ever would happen to his wife, since if two men weren't able to raise a kid, one sure as hell wouldn't be able to do it on his own. And his own statements meant that it would be mandatory for CPS to step in and remove his kids if his wife should die.
As I said, that was the end of the discussion. Some people did not talk to me for a while after that, but I survived that horrible punishment quite well TYVM.

Your logic has a glaring hole in it. Men are dumb. And sometimes having multiple men in a given space multiplies the stupidity. I cannot count in my life how many insanely stupid things I've done as a direct result of being around other guys, where if left to my own devices and alone I would never have done such horrendously dumb things.

I live in a gay friendly neighborhood. I have yet to meet a 2-man couple who has kids that act like frat boy idiots. I know 2 gender couples that have kids who aren't super responsible, and make a lot of damaging choices. And I know gay couples that might do dumb things, but they have chosen to not have kids. Gay couples don't accidentally end up with kids. They have to go through a lot of pain and spend a lot of money to get a child, so they give parenting a lot of thought and consideration. Us breeders are the ones that become spontaneous parents easily, and therefore continue to act like fools.

I think either a seal broke or hell froze over because there was no feuding this year. Same for me, but then again, I have not seen my family for the holidays...yet. I am going to the other coast first weekend of January for a family reunion and 10K race. I am staying in a hotel to avoid my brother's issues and the insanity that rules his household. I am glad my mother is no longer around to see what has become of him because if she was, his situation would kill her.

And then I get all complacent, and expect everything to be pleasant and BAM left field nit picking that gets me all lathered up. It kinda makes sense, because I get my hurt feelings out of the way before we meet, and I put up all my shields.

Even my DGM (who would have been 119yo by now) would not have given such a sexist, shortsighted, response... Recognizing that a lot of times men do dumber stuff in groups than alone...I'm not sure how that's "short-sighted"...yes it's probably sexist but it's also true. I responded to your claim that if 2 men cannot raise a child, a single lone straight man certainly cannot because 2>1. I pointed out that sometimes 1 is better than 2 when it comes to men being able to competently handle things. The same goes for women, the same goes for straight couples. Sometimes having 1 person raise a child is infinitely better than having the 2 original parents raising the child together. You seem to think that raising children with someone is a math problem whereby ability simply gets added together. If your DGM wasn't smart enough to understand this basic concept then that's on her...maybe that would explain why the old theory of "stay together for the children" is laughable among intelligent folks these days. They understand that sometimes 1 is better than 2 because human dynamics are not a simple addition of abilities.

I have to admit, I have noticed that the vast majority of professional basketball players are black. Unlike the former Stephen Colbert, I do see colour I'm afraid [img src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png" class="smile" alt="[img class="smile" alt=" " src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png"]"] I do notice that most basketball are black, and most hockey players are white. It is what it is. I'm sure various cultural issues are the reason, as well as socioeconomic, and geography. I've also noticed that there are more black gymnasts and swimmers in what used to be white sports It doesn't have anything to do with whether or not I will watch the sport. Interesting story where a commentator got a suspension because he pointed out that Lamar Jackson (black quarterback) is very good at faking handoffs, and that he might be helped because the football is dark (brown) and his skin is dark (brown) which doesn't give the obvious outline of the football like it might against a white quarterback's hands/arms. His thought was maybe it takes half a second longer for a defender to see it, which might be a big difference on a play. I thought it made sense...he wasn't advocating for any action to be taken, he was stating it was kind of a "you may not have considered this, but here's some insight as someone who played defense before and had to look for things like this". I didn't think it was HUGELY insightful in that it should be common sense if you think about it. But he got suspended. It feels like he got suspended because he pointed out a player was black...which seems...odd...we all already know this. On the one hand, I get it, the NFL and the networks just want to ignore race completely to avoid the entire issue. On the other hand...I'm not sure he actually SAID anything that was wrong, or untrue, or racist. I thought it was interesting to your point about "I notice their color, but I don't care"...and seeing a story that I thought was mostly based around "pretend you don't notice the color of someone or how it impacts the game" IMO.

I thought they all wore gloves.

I thought they all wore gloves. Nope. Some do, some don't (and some do in certain situations). I think it probably has something to do with arm color though when you fake the handoff, the ball is obscured by a lot of arm. I don't think it's a big difference, but it has to be tougher to spot than holding a brown football against a pasty white hand/arm!

My backyard neighbors are gay. Funny enough they were talking about having children and it came out that the “wife” of the family is getting eggs from his sister, then he said he would be using his sperm Our entire crowd went dead silent and the “husband “ of the couple asked me what happened. I said G just said he was impregnating his sisters eggs. The husband said NO No No, and chattered quickly in French to his partner who started saying NO No No as well. Whew. The husband will impregnate the “wife’s “ sister’s eggs so the baby will be genetically related to them both. I don’t know if they’re hiring a surrogate or if the sister will carry and no one asked. A surrogate is easily 50k.
