My dad once told me that no one will attend my funeral. 😳 I thought he was kidding. He wasn't.
I dropped the subject, so I never found out why he said it.

I put this here because I can’t put it on Facebook without offending someone in my family. Do you think you will ever get to the point where you attend random funerals just so you have something to do? My dad is 77, and has reached the point where he will now attend 2-3 funerals a week, even if he never knew the deceased, and can come up with only the weakest association to the individual. Such as “I once met his son at the store, or someone mentioned his name at the barbershop” While it gives my dad something to do, I find it incredibly strange and not a “normal” thing to do. Maybe He’s trolling for widows? I know if I ask him about it he will be offended that I dare question his motives. I have an uncle who attends any funeral service for anyone who once worked for the Fire Dept. He feels it's part of the whole family thing they try to generate. Admin usually sends out emails notifying the entire Dept. of deaths of former fire personnel, along with notes of private services, etc.

Admin usually sends out emails notifying the entire Dept. of deaths of former fire personnel, along with notes of private services, etc. I think this is pretty common among firefighters. Esp if they have been a firefighter for a length of time. Being from a large city, I wouldn't say my father, who retired from the Fire Dept, went to every firefighter funeral. But he went to a lot of them. Besides being a member of the "family", when I was young, he worked at whatever fire station he was needed at, so he actually knew most of the firefighters personally. As I grew up, most of the things my family did socially, were done with other firefighters and their families. Later, he was assigned/promoted to Capt at the SL International airport, so he always worked at that station, and with the same guys every shift. His uncle was the Fire Chief, his dad and brother were also Captains in the department. He grew up around firefighters. So for me, it would have seemed odd if he didn't go to most of the funerals.

A lot of the older people who are in the same church or organization as the deceased, go to all of the funerals. Attending funerals is kind of morbid but it's a clean activity with no costs. The benefit if companionship and free food. I know people have someone watch the home so it isn't broken into. I have known men who cruise funerals for widows.
I observe a lot of people. One guy had taken viagra thinking the widow would be alone. Nope. All her family was there. He deserved the erection distress. People cruise the obituaries to see what jobs have come open. Realtors can find potential listings. Estate sale brokers.

I believe that once you hit a certain age you should be allowed to do anything without being questioned on the reason why! Oh, goody! Is my age "certain" enough? (Say yes!) I just turned 79 last week. If not now, when?
