Today, 11/17..."CBS "Sunday Morning" with Jane Pauly...there was a segment on a Greek Island honey production..supposedly the Island folks start day off with a spoon full...supposedly most Island folk have record long lives.. Did a simple search.."Greek Island Honey..Amazon"..Viola they have it...three kinds , depending on where bees collect...My problem, it's pricy...not part of prime so delivery of $6 and change so a bottle a bit over $25.00 delivered...great testimonials by the way from users... Actually believe they are out of stock right now on two of the types but am wondering..doubtfully..but still...anyone here ever purchase this or similar Greek Island honey and their thoughts if worth it...I am still tempted...Hell, as much as I want to, know and accept I can't take it with me. Believe I will send info to Daughter..Know she is a honey user and she can easily afford it..possible she will purchase and let me know if worth it.....even send me a jar as a gift..{Me bad I know,,hee, hee, hee} …..

I have bought a number of Greek products, thanks to decent availability here (gourmet grocery stores and Greek food stores) but have not bought that honey. I made a note to find some, though. I use only Greek olive oil (supplier at the farmers market), and I've had Greek chocolate (they make only white and milk, no dark). My honey is from a local beekeeper at the farmer's market I always greet him, with "how's my honey, man?" and he laughs every time).

Is it the honey that contributes to their long lives, or their Mediterranean diet? The Greeks eat a lot of fish, yoghurt, and a lot of vegetables.

I highly suspect the health benefits are from environment and culture, rather than honey. But I have no scientific proof.

Dezii, I'm thinking the International Food Store on 17th Street Causeway might be a source for the honey. I come down that way every now and then. The owners are from somewhere in the Mediterranean so they might carry it. Not sure how far you are from there. I mean, if it's the Viagra effect you're looking for.....

I saw the story. They offered zero reason for me to believe it is the honey. They even said the couple that moved there wanted a simple, natural way of life. It isn't a stretch to believe that a high stress life, filled with chemicals and pollution takes a toll on humans. While living a low stress life filled with pleasant activity, sunshine, clean air and less processed foods leads to healthier people. Also, there is a ton of research about cultural optimism and human connection keeps people physically healthy. There is no research that says honey is the fountain of youth. I bet if i eat a tablespoon of that honey every day and make no other changes in my life, my health won't improve even a little.

You might be better off eating your local honey. I keep hearing that if you eat local honey, it offers some protection from allergies to local plants, although that has been debunked on a bunch of medical websites. But you may want to consider if their honey is great because it is special, or if it is just great for them because it was formed from pollen that is local to their area.

Sheesh.

Sheesh. Nothing totally conclusive one way or another, and certainly not harmful. If it does have positive effects, they are related to the fact that the honey is made from local allergens, so her chances of benefit are better from local honey than they are from foreign honey.
