Below NYT article from April, 2009. May be behind a pay wall. U.S. Stymied as Guns Flow to Mexican CartelsHOUSTON — John Phillip Hernandez, a 24-year-old unemployed machinist who lived with his parents, walked into a giant sporting goods store here in July 2006, and plunked $2,600 in cash on a glass display counter. A few minutes later, Mr. Hernandez walked out with three military-style rifles. One of those rifles was recovered seven months later in Acapulco, Mexico, where it had been used by drug cartel gunmen to attack the offices of the Guerrero State attorney general, court documents say. Four police officers and three secretaries were killed. Although Mr. Hernandez was arrested last year as part of a gun-smuggling ring, most of the 22 others in the ring are still at large. Before their operation was discovered, the smugglers had transported what court documents described as at least 339 high-powered weapons to Mexico over a year and a half, federal agents said. This linked NYT article below dated August, 2019, is about U.S. guns in Jamaica but references the 200,000 firearms made in the U.S. and crossing the U.S./Mexico border annually. Article may be behind a pay wall. How American Gun Laws Are Fueling Jamaica’s Homicide CrisisHundreds of thousands of guns sold in the United States vanish because of loose American gun laws. Many reappear on the Caribbean island, turning its streets into battlefields.CLARENDON, Jamaica — She came to Jamaica from the United States about four years ago, sneaking in illegally, stowed away to avoid detection. Within a few short years, she became one of the nation’s most-wanted assassins. She preyed on the parish of Clarendon, carrying out nine confirmed kills, including a double homicide outside a bar, the killing of a father at a wake and the murder of a single mother of three. Her violence was indiscriminate: She shot and nearly killed a 14-year-old girl getting ready for church. With few clues to identify her, the police named her Briana. They knew only her country of origin — the United States — where she had been virtually untraceable since 1991. She was a phantom, the eighth-most-wanted killer on an island with no shortage of murder, suffering one of the highest homicide rates in the world. And she was only one of thousands. Jamaica’s own gun laws are relatively strict, with fewer than 45,000 legal firearms in a country of almost three million. But it is awash in illegal weapons. The Jamaican authorities, who estimate that 200 guns are smuggled into the country from the United States every month, routinely ask American officials to examine some of the weapons they seize in raids, during traffic stops or at the ports. Of the nearly 1,500 weapons the A.T.F. checked from 2016 through 2018, 71 percent came from the United States. The figures are similar in Mexico, which has been lobbying the United States for more than a decade to stop the illegal guns flowing south. By some estimates, more than 200,000 guns are trafficked into Mexico each year, many to feed the vast criminal networks fighting over the multibillion-dollar drug trade to the United States. Nine Women And Children Gunned Down Burned By The Cartel!
And.....? Was it MILLIONS of these Mormon women and children gunned down by the cartel? Isn't that what you said about the slaughter of the Kurds? "So what? Was it millions of Kurds?"

I could care less about what is happening in Syria, They have been fighting for centuries. On the other hand I have great concern for the American women and children killed by the Cartels 70 miles from our border!

That means you care, but it is possible for you to care even less.

Please let me know when you’ll start caring about the 100+ thousand Mexicans that have been killed by the cartels and not just polygamists living in a war zone.

I definitely care more about Mexicans than Syria, Which has been a war zone for Centuries. Mexico is next door to me, I have many Mexican, Mexican American friends, My DIL is Mexican. I have great concerns about the ATF allowing thousands of gun to go to Mexico, I think that everyone involved with it and the coverup should go to prison for a long time! Sometimes. Don, I really wonder about you!

It may have started then, but, by far the largest amount went to Mexico under Obama's watch,,
even after repeated calls from the store that sold many of the gun, only to be told that he had to keep selling them!!!! I know the owner of that store!
Then, Obama, used his authority to shut down the investigation, that I believe was going right to Obama's front door!!

"I know the owner of that store!" Anecdotal. So you believe Obama and Holder should be prosecuted. You should then hold trump accountable for obstruction of justice because he is directing all who have been subpoenaed to not provide depositions under oath to the impeachment investigation. Obstruction of justice is an impeachable offense. What's good for one president is good for another, right?

Yes, you've told us many times how they came here illegally. Then you have the unmitigated gall to whine about the illegals. I guess if you personally know them, it's A-OK. The rest are scum. Hypocrisy of the first order.

Little late to go back to Fast and Furious. You want to start with George Bush? After all it started under his watch. Let's watch trump and his impeachment proceedings. Should be entertaining.

I am sure it is possible to care less than what OC displays here on a regular basis, but one would really have to work at it to do so.

I am not happy about this, and I don't think anyone else is either. I'm just not sure if deploying the military to occupy another country is the proper response.

People have choices in life. If you want to move to a shit hole country then you assume the risks. It's just sad that innocent children get killed because of their parent's decisions. But no, I definitely do not want our military to be the keepers of the world.

You do realize they have been there since 1920. Move back and forth between the U.S. and Mexico.

As is always the challenge to know exactly what he means when he governs 280 characters at a time, President Trump might. link
