Thoughts? Opinion? Anti-vax mom says she gave out lollipops tainted with chickenpox An anti-vaccination mother took to social media on Wednesday to share her decision to give out tainted lollipops for Halloween. The Australian mother, who identifies herself online as Sarah Walker RN, shared in the private Facebook group "Stop Mandatory Vaccination" that her son, whose name has been redacted, contracted chickenpox and that she planned to "help" other children in the community by spreading the virus through candy. "So my beautiful son [redacted] has the chickenpox at the moment and we've both decided to help others with natural immunity this Halloween!" Walker wrote. "We have the packaging open and closing down pat and can't wait to help others in our community." Walker's message was screenshot and shared on Light for Riley, a page dedicated to protecting "babies & families from vaccine-preventable diseases" in honor of Riley Hughes, a baby boy who tragically died from whooping cough in March 2015. "Have you ever seen something that instantaneously makes your skin crawl?" the post, written by Riley's father, Greg Hughes, reads. Thankfully, whether Walker went ahead with her scheme or it was entirely made up, Queensland Health told News.com.au that the risk of chickenpox transmission from such tainted lollipops would be extremely low, since the virus does not survive long on surfaces. A nurse who so publicly disregards public safety should be fired. I doubt they were they giving their little disclaimer to anyone who came to the door.

What the flying f*ck?!. She needs to be stripped of her license. Who says she won't put patients at risk in the name of her beliefs?
I wouldn't trust that woman if she was the last nurse on earth.

As the mother of an immuno-compromised child, I cannot express how angry this makes me. I can only hope this is a hoax. How DARE SHE.

I don’t know Australian law but, if this is real, she needs to be charged with assault
I had chicken pox as a child and it was awful. To willingly put that on anyone is beyond comprehension. Plus, isn’t chicken pox more dangerous to adults? I don’t know that to be fact but it’s what I’ve heard

My post doc caught chicken pox from her nephew. This was before the vaccine was available. My marathon running, rock climbing, extremely healthy student wound up in ICU for 3 weeks, and looked like death warmed over when she came back to work at 6 weeks.
This is assault. I hope Australia treats it as such.

If the story I read about this yesterday is correct, she could get 10 years of prison if this is a hoax, and more if she really did it.

Seems likely a hoax, and then I didn't see anything that they were giving the candy to unsuspecting trick or treaters? Just providing the germs to other parents to pass on...

What did they do? Unwrap and lick the lollipop? Rub it on the kid? Cough on it?

I would have paid much more attention to the linked article if someone who knew more about chickenpox transmission had been given some space. I'm not sure if having a symptomatic child lick lollies is likely to infect anyone else. I'm sorta under the impression that chickenpox is most transmissible while asymptomatic and that inhalation is the common mode of transmission.
I may be wrong regarding transmission windows and mechanisms, but wouldn't it be beautiful if an antivax nutcase who claimed to be an RN just utterly flunked the whole how the disease-is-transmitted mechanics?

The article did say it was unlikely to have infected anyone because the virus doesn't live long in a non-human surface. But attempted crime is still a crime. Being a failure doesn't absolve you of the crime.

Being a failure doesn't absolve you of the crime. Right. It's still tampering with a food item and trying to infect kids. Just because she's a moron and isn't up on how diseases spread doesn't mean letting her kid lick everyone's lollipops was ok.

It's not an effective mode of infection but it's still a crime. She intended to harm children. This is what happens when you let people think their beliefs have equal weight against scientific facts.

I had chicken pox as an adult (age 28)...got it from my son. He had 36 spots on his entire body, I had 40 spots just on my nose. I had it everywhere inside & out....yes, there too!...everywhere! Socks tied on my hands at night did not good. My Dr. made me come in the back door so I wouldn't scare other patients in the front waiting area. I was out of work for 6 weeks and then returned with a heavy coating of makeup.
It was horrible! And...it leaves you wide open for shingles as you age too....which can be even worse.
And now I'm itching just thinking about this!

If someone builds a defective pipe-bomb, intent on hurting others, that is still a crime. What will she attempt next time? and if they let her get away with a failed attempt, will other idiots jump on the bandwagon? She needs to face some harsh penalties.

Medicare will now cover the vaccine if you have Medicare Part D.

I think I'm more disgusted, terrified, upset that no one seems to be upset that this person easily TAMPERED with something that someone might ingest.
It's right up there with storing Bleach in a Milk jug (and leaving it on the kitchen counter) before putting it away.
The vindictive ugly part of me thinks this woman's kid should be given tootsie rolls that are actually dog poop... or maybe people should make a concerted effort to cough and sneeze on the people in this family (making sure they get plenty wet) cause you know - germs are good for the kid.
The rational part of me wonders what is wrong with this woman and if I knew them personally, I'd stop eating with them - even at restaurants as they might slip something they thought was good for me into the food. AND I'd be willing to bet this woman would serve peanut laced treats to children - even after she'd been told about a child's allergy.... (Again, what is wrong with woman? And does it make her dangerous?)

If you knew this lady, you probably would have stopped eating with her a long time ago, as you would be bored and annoyed at her incessant talk about her superior knowledge of disease and vaccines. The only people who can stand her anymore are those that believe.

I need my flu shot too....going to town Tue. so will check if the female pharmacist is working...don't care to half undress for a male to give me a shot.

I'm nervous about the Shingrix vaccine because I had a reaction to the previous shingles vaccine and was sick and on antibiotics for two weeks. Yes, my doctor recommended it a year ago and I haven't done a thing about getting it.

I had a red arm from shoulder to elbow that itched like crazy for my 2 weeks. Now I'm really going to have to physic myself. My pharmacist warned me that I'd likely have a reaction since I'd had such a bad case of chicken pox.

And TheOtherMe: pharmacist who administered my first Shingrix shot said it might hurt for a few days. I imagine her comment was based on verified and published side effects. The area on my arm around where shot was administered was slightly tendered for a couple of days. Never felt ill though. When I get my flu shots, the area around the shot entry point has never been tender. So there is some truth to the Shingrix side effect cautions.

My reaction to the old shingles vaccine supposedly happens to less than 1% of people. Guess who got lucky?
I've also had shingles and the reaction to the vaccine was worse than my case of shingles.
I am not anti-vax at all but I do remember that last vaccine.
