SouthernSusana, Call the firing range , ask for some one to pick it up, sell for you. You will make some money from it, they will charge a commission, they will sell it to some one that is legal to have it and they will do a background check. The gun may be a collectors item!
It's not a collector's item. It is just an ordinary handgun. However, the firing range estimated its value to be between $250-$300. Unfortunately, I didn't find the extra ammo until later. I have emailed the police dept. for their suggestion as to what to do with it. I did mention that I had consigned the handgun itself to the tactical range where he bought it. Good deal.

I would take it to the police dept. When my father passed I found dynamite in his dresser I took it to the police dept the were scared shit less when I presented it. The ROFL is for the dynamite in your dad's dresser. What the heck was dynamite doing in your dad's dresser let alone in the house! I had that experience when my late brother passed. Blasting caps. All the neighbors enjoyed the show from a distance. No idea what he was going with them.

The ammo can be sold. You might call your local pawn shop and ask if they can sell it. If you had a friend to help, you could advertise it and let him sell it. Of course, meet at a videoed parking lot.
You might as well make as much money as you can from it.

Unless you've got a LOT of it, like thousands of rounds...or it's very expensive ammo...the effort involved in selling it probably isn't worth the price you can get from it. Most basic ammo is dirt cheap, unless you're talking apocalypse-style stockpiles of it. Even cheaper if you're trying to sell it secondhand to a place that has to turn around and re-sell it like a pawn shop. It would also almost definitely have to be in a sealed box...even then they might not take it. I can't honestly imagine ever buying ammo from a place where I thought it had ever gone through a random individual's hands...too much risk associated with it.

Where I live, it's relatively easy to resell ammo. Most people are straight up when they say factory loads. In our family, the ammo goes with the gun.

I probably would have included the ammo along with the gun when I dropped it off for consignment at the range.

I probably would have included the ammo along with the gun when I dropped it off for consignment at the range. And I would have. But like many of us, DH didn't store the ammo with the gun. I was anxious to get the gun out of the house and found the ammo later.

I did that today. The guy said they couldn't include it but it would get used. He made a point to locate DH's gun so he could push it for me. Nice guy.
