and I’m glad.
DH and I just spent a week in Italy with my sister and her husband. He husband is ethnically Italian and wanted to check out the villages his family came from. We went to one. It was tiny. Some old guy drove by and BIL went to talk to him (A) After a short exchange the guy pointed out two people who lived there and spoke English. They are English expats. BIL spoke with the couple briefly and we were invited in for a drink. It’s about 11:00 am. We had aperil spritzers.
The couple ( G and L) translated for A as he gave us the history of the village. Then G calls a friend who owns a winery and said we would get a tour. We drive to a bigger town and are met by F the winery owner. While we have a tour, Fs friend P fires up the BBQ. P is also an English expat.
We we have a BBQ and drink lots of wine. We also meet Fs gf, his brother, and his mom.
The group then then invited us into the town where we were staying for more drinks and appetizers. We go. DH gets to ride to town in Gs vintage Jaguar roadster.
We spent sevaral more hours out with this group nd stay out until midnight.
My my mother always said to never go into someone’s house you don’t know, don’t take drinks from them and don’t get in a strangers car.
Im glad I didn’t listen. I haven’t had that much fun in a long time.

Glad you had so much safe fun with...gasp!...strangers. It sounds just like Angel’s stories from her time living in Italy.
Once I’m done paying for college tuition, I’m so going to Italy!

Sounds like a good time to me.
They are not strangers, they are new friends!

When you travel sometimes you have to put yourself into the hands of strangers and trust them. Taxi drivers who don't speak your language, the private driver who leads you through a parking lot filled with motorcycles and stray dogs outside Delhi Airport in the middle of the night, the bicycle rickshaw driver who doesn't speak English but indicates that he'll wait for you as you explore the Red Fort (he did)... Knock wood, I'm happy to say I've never felt as if I was in danger although I've probably been overcharged a few times.
I'm not extraverted enough to get into conversations with the locals but will respond if they initiate it. Ah, there was the guy who encountered me in Brussels as I was squinting at a map and took me on public transportation to the Military Museum- fascinating place and he knew every airplane. Thirty years later DH and I visited and ended up spending the whole day there.
So, yes, sometimes you have to ignore that "Mom voice" and take a chance! I'm glad you had such a good time.

I talked to my parents today. They're glad I didn't listen to them either.

swamp Over the years, I got to know a lot of Paul McCartney fans online. In 2008, we had a world wide meet up in Liverpool for a McCartney concert. It was the most awesome gathering I've ever been to with a group of McCartney fans. Not only that, but I got to see Edinburgh on that trip through the eyes of a friend who lives there, Liverpool through the eyes of a friend who lives there and toured places in London totally off the beaten path with a friend who lives there. That is the way to travel--through the eyes of locals.
