The young man's father knew his son was mentally unbalanced and didn't want him to have access to guns, but the mom was a gun nut and insisted she had the right to have as many and whatever kinds of guns she wanted. Since the kid was an adult, nothing the cops could do.
The El Paso shooter's mom was also concerned and called the cops about her son buying so many weapons - the cops told her they couldn't do anything either, because her son was an adult.
It's a shame there isn't some kind of law that allows siblings/parents/children/grannies of crazy people to contact the cops and get the crazy person's guns taken away, and have that person put on a 'no sell' black list, isn't it?
So many relatives must realize they have someone living in their household who's about to go off and shoot a bunch of people, yet they're adults, they are allowed to buy whatever guns they want, and they no one can do a thing about it. Yet.
Wondering about one's mental stability, maybe relatives should contract the police about people that post on political message boards!! If someone is posting to message boards about how he hates Jews (or browns, or gays) and is buying a bunch of weapons to start exterminating them, then fuck yes, they need to get reported to police, by relatives or by any other person who knows what he's doing.
If you really think the problem is just the mentally ill, you have to put some teeth into the laws that might stop them. That means some people who only joke around about murdering people on the internet might get their guns taken away, at least until they can prove to a professional that they aren't really planning to be a mass murderer. I'm ok with that - you post stupid shit on line about killing politicians, bombing a school, murdering a bunch of people, etc. then you deserve whatever shit comes your way. Like shouting 'fire' in a crowded building.
Now back to the reason I started this thread - our President continually flip flops. That isn't a problem for you?

So what pisses you off is the fact Tenn suggested gun control and not the fact that 20 small children died? Telling. Tenn is using the dead kids only for political reasons..
So tell me, he broke into the locked gun safe, killed his mother, then killed a bunch of kids and teachers,,
What gun rules are you going to put into practice that would have stopped this shooting?? Let's hear them.
I don't know all the facts in that case. I was responding to the fact that you were more worried about inconveniencing people than saving lives. There may have been all kinds of opportunities to stop this guy that you are conveniently glossing over. There may not be. I'm not educated enough about the case to say either way.

How about those that hate old white conservative men? Not really, if he see something is wrong with his thinking he can make changes. Not doing a song and dance, on every "Correct Political move" Where you only make that move because of the political pressure not because of your personal thinking. If Trump did that, he would be swaying like a tall palm tree in a stiff breeze worried about what a extremely small, highly vocal, misguided group of falling off the edge LEFT! He was pointed in a direction by the NRA, Let's talk a bout the NRA, First, the NRA is not only made up of Republicans,
There are lot's of law biding Democrats that want to keep their Second Amendment Rights in tact.
How many criminals, are in the NRA? A huge amount of Law enforcement are members of the NRA, What Rights that the NRA represents, are a "DIRECT" result of the Mass shootings or other criminal acts? Pretty simple, the guns that the NRA works to Protect, meaning lawful Second Amendment Rights. Those guns do not fire by them selves!! NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU SCREAM,, They don't fire by themselves!! Quite frankly, you all are extremely jealous that you do not have an organization as powerful as the NRA to protect your wishes on abortions and sexual Rights.
Now instead of attacking the lawful NRA, go after the real cause of these mass shootings, the senseless drive by's, getting drunk shooting people. Most dangerous of all, the family member, ex lover, that for what ever reason, decides to take out a bunch of people that were close to them It is not the guns that are doing this!

To quote the old saying, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results. Why do you expect the number of shootings to go down, while doing nothing? Those children didn't "deserve" to die. No one deserves to die. What we're doing, or not doing, right now isn't working We have to try new tactics, and if someone gets "butthurt" in the process, well, that's too bad. I personally don't have a problem with waiting periods. And, if we need to "tag" people who are having mental issues, including the schools tagging kids whose parents are ignoring their mental health issues, I'm o.k. with that, too.
The problem I have with the current POTUS is first he says he's going to make changes, then, in this case, after speaking with the gun lobby, he changes his stance, and does nothing. If he wasn't going to make any changes in the first place, he should have said nothing.

Background checks probably won't make a difference for these terrorism mass shootings, but it is already proven that it reducing rates of domestic shootings and suicides. That alone makes it worthwhile.
That said, if mental health is the problem, I expect the GOP to start passing legislation to improve quality and access to mental health care.
I will take me answer off-air. Thank you.

The mass slaughter of innocents in the U.S. by firearms is a political issue. Deal with it.

This is actually what Trump DOES do - but for what different right leaning people say.
He sways like a palm tree in a high wind depending on whatever source he just listened to - and he does that over and over and over again.
In this case, some of the GOPers started talking about better background checks, Trump goes to visit some of the shooting victims, and decides better background checks would be good. Until he talked to some other people, including the NRA, who whined about the 'slippery slope' and suddenly, Trump reverses himself and says background checks are a slippery slope.
He did in about healthcare, too, first saying he would repeal and replace the ACA, then saying he never said that.
He said Mexico would build the wall. Then he said the wall might not be a real wall. Then he said he never said Mexico would actually pay for the wall.
He said Nato was obsolete and unfair that the US had to pay for it. Then he said it wasn't obsolete anymore.
And how many times has he reversed himself on Russian meddling? First he insisted they didn't meddle in the election. Then he agreed with intelligence agencies in November 2017 that they probably had. Then he went back to saying they probably hadn't because they had no reason to, and he didn't believe our own intelligence agencies, who said that they did.
He has no firm values, no moral compass, he just says what he just heard on Fox and Friends, or from his buddy Hannity, or if Rush plays golf with him, or if Ivanka or Jared drops by, or some GOP politician, or if he hears his poll numbers are sinking and he's grasping for something he thinks might play well with his base, like better gun background checks, which is something 90% of Americans (including most NRA members) are in favor of. Until, that is, he talks to the NRA, and then he changes his mind. Again.
He is not an intelligent person changing his mind after considering both sides. He's a tumbleweed, blowing in whatever direction his most recent conversation takes him, and just as likely to change his mind again in another half day.

For all I see on Facebook about people informing me how they like Trump is such an "honest" and "straightforward" President compared to the last one I can't figure out why they then spend so much time informing us liberals what Trump REALLY said anytime words come out of his mouth. Either what he said is "honest and straightforward" and to be taken at face value or he's lying thru his teeth. You can't be both. Quite the paradox we got going on here.

And he's flopping again. President Donald Trump on Wednesday offered what appeared to be another pivot in his views on gun control measures, saying the nation’s background check system is “already strong” but that he has “an appetite” for plugging loopholes in the federal process.

Some one must have showed him the poll that says 90% of Americans want to strengthen background checks for gun purchases.
Someone else will drop by, jangle his car keys in front of Trump's face to distract him, tell him how much the NRA adores him and hopes he'll stick to thoughts and prayers for the gun massacre victims, and he'll flop right back.
He's like a chameleon in a crayon factory, changing colors whenever he passes a new color crayon.
