Put something that you need for work in the back seat. Put an empty baby bottle between your thighs while sitting in the driver's seat. Do something which will trigger your memory that your kids are in the backseat. Infant twins found dead and ‘foaming at the mouth’ in back of Bronx car, dad arrestedTwin 1-year-old babies were found dead and foaming at the mouths in the back of a car in The Bronx on Friday — after being left in the hot vehicle for eight hours by their absentminded father, law enforcement sources told The Post. The dad, 37, whose name was not immediately released, is a social worker for the Veterans Administration, and is now in custody, police said. It was 8 a.m. Friday when he parked his Honda Accord at West Kingsbridge Road and Kingsbridge Terrace with the babies — a boy and girl — still inside, and left to go to work at a nearby VA hospital, police said. He told police that he returned to the car at 4 p.m. — and only realized the babies were inside after he had begun driving, police said. Too many can't get their noses out of their phones long enough to observe and see what needs to be done.
Cell phones & social media is making a lot of folks DUMB!

I don't think this is related to phones, since it has been happening my entire life.
Sad thing is there are all kinds of "kid in back seat" alarms that are available for under $100. It wouldn't take a whole lot to get car manufacturers to start including them in the cars, but for my new car it was only available in the highest trim level.

Just curious since I haven't heard about them.
This is so sad. Wish I hadn't read it.

.I simply cannot understand how a parent can forget that their child is in the car with them. although my own kids (and grandkids) are grown, I often take my dog with me in the car. Although she’s quiet, I never forget that she’s there and on warm days I look for shade to park in, open the sunroof & windows and refill her water bowl before leaving her.
I cannot wrap my head around the idea that any parent could forget that their child is in the dar with them.

I can wrap my head around a parent doing something like this. Especially if doing the particular task (taking the babies to daycare) is not part of their regular schedule.
I've witnessed commuters (who were not newbies) accidentally get too close to the tracks when a train is passing or who attempted to run across the tracks to 'make their train' and who got hit and killed by a train (usually an unexpected train on one of the other tracks). The gates were down, the bells were ringing, other commuters where waiting for their train. I have no idea why their brains said doing what they did was ok. (probably because they had done it before without bad consequences is my rational).
People's auto pilots are NOT always reliable.

And I think a cell phone might help with these kinds of things. set a reminder so the phone didddly dangily doos at the time you expect to be at your final destination (or after you should have dropped off the kids). From what I hear from my coworkers with kids, daycare providers are not nice about late or early drop offs... so if you are dropping off kids - you have probably figured out the timing so you get them there during the drop off window. You aren't just dropping them off at your convenience. Maybe daycare in other places doesn't work that way.
Have another trusted adult text you with "hey, how did your commute go? Were the kids good?" about the time you expect to be at your final destination (or a bit AFTER the expected kid drop off time). Or ASK the adult dropping off the kids to text you when the kids are dropped off. (Dropping off little kids involves work shutting off the car, getting them out of the car seats - walking them in walking back to the car, starting the car ... there's an opportunity to text while NOT driving.)
The cell phone is the ultimate "nag machine". My brothers' phones are constantly didddly dangily doo-ing and buzzbuzzbuzz and dingalinging and they seem to be getting constant reminders from their wives. (my brothers are knuckle heads. I love my brothers.) My co-workers seem to be getting constant texts at work (usually their spouse or kid). They are checking their phones at specific times during the day. They are texting or calling at specific times during the day. The "cell phone break" has replaced the "smoke break".

I guess this wouldn't work for men but I've heard of women specifically placing their purse in the back seat. Cell phone alarms could be another tool.

I am never surprised when I hear that the parent "forgetting" was intentional. Especially when it is like the lady that routinely left her baby in the car to drink at a bar, and when the kid died Mom suddenly said she had "forgotten".

Yes there are a bunch you can buy separately. They range from things like gps aps that go off when you get a certain distance from the car seat, to actual car seats that have an alarm built in that goes off when the car shuts off. www.fatherly.com/gear/best-car-seat-alarms/The Subaru one doesn't have a weight detector like some of the other car models do, but it just goes off if you open the back door before the car starts and then you don't open the back door after the car is turned off.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. If I had little ones I would invest in one.

Looks like this guy is already in custody for it. Maybe if they keep arresting people who "forget" it'll deter future horrible people. Those poor babies

People forget things. We're far from perfect. With 300 million people in this country, and an average of 37 deaths per year, we're actually doing pretty good with the awareness effort on this problem. Doesn't make it any less sad when it does happen.

I'm thankful I've never forgotten anything of this magnitude or with this kind of consequence, but I can understand how it happens. I'm so grateful for sliding doors in the van that allow the kids to keep the doors open until I'm in the car. I didn't return shopping carts for years if I wasn't right next to a return because I wouldn't leave the kids alone in a closed parked car even for me to run across a lane.
