Your fingerprints fade out which makes the electronic capture almost all entities have gone to vs. manual capture (with ink) virtually impossible. It's time for DH to renew his concealed carry license and it will take at least three tries (separate day and time for each attempt) and may not be successful even then. It's a 20-mile round trip to the location and $10 a try. It's going to be interesting to see what the grand State of Texas does if they can't get a successful print capture. Oh, and the $80 renewal application fee is non-refundable.

So, old people can start committing crimes without worrying about fingerprints?

I never noticed that, but in looking at my fingers, the tips appear smoother. Wonder if it’s all those years of cleaning?

I'm sure this won't solve the OP's problem, but for those of you trying to use machines where your fingerprints are already on file, the problem is often that your skin is too dry. This is part of aging.
I had to keep a small bottle of lotion in my purse just to clock in.

I'd noticed that it was hard for me to see my fingerprints and I figured it was just my old eyes! Somehow this makes me feel a bit better.
It's not surprising, really- with everything we put our hands through including a lot of keyboarding, I can see why they might get worn down. I don't use gloves for cleaning or gardening so that adds to the wear and tear.

When I applied for my carry permit 3 years ago, it took 3 times before my prints were accepted. Last go-round cost me $25 for someone to actually do the black powder prints. 4 years ago the FBI accepted them without any problem when I applied to be a volunteer at the VA Medical Center.

why is it a separate trip for each attempt? that makes zero sense.

I had my prints done by the instructor of the carry class. All paperwork was sent to the Arkansas State Patrol. prints were pulled and sent to FBI for investigating. Mine were not good enough, so sent back to Little Rock as rejected.
I then took paperwork to my local police department, sent those prints to Little Rock, then they were sent to the FBI, and again rejected as not good enough to determine who I was and my background.
Remember, at this time I had already gone through FBI fingerprints and background check to work at the VA and was approved within 3 weeks.
Third round sent me to a certified black powder finger print expert. I finally was cleared for a carry permit.

We're waiting to hear if today's attempt was successful. I will be lobbying my state rep for an ink capture or other alternative option if this doesn't work for DH.

There's always an upside to growing old. If they want clear fingerprints from me I will probably direct them to my keyboard.
I just now looked at my finger tips and they appear to be wrinkled but better wrinkled fingertips than wrinkled face?

They do the fingerprints at the sheriffs office for the concealed carry here in my Indiana county. They used the ink and card deal just like they do for the felons. It took me a long time to get it all back. But get this, I have a lifetime concealed carry permit. No matter how old and demented I get I do not have to prove I have wits enough to carry a gun. I couldn't believe it. They do an initial background check and that's it.

As expected, DH's fingerprint capture failed. They didn't have an appointment available today and I asked him to be on deck Thursday and Friday for storm prep. Maybe he'll go next week if they have an opening. Or maybe he won't. Sort of irked about the wasted $$ but it's not a deal-breaker. And it may be irrelevant if we're trapped in the house for 4-5 days by flooding rains.

My sister has said some percentage of people's fingerprints cannot be read electronically, maybe 10%? She found out the hard way, because she's one of those people affected. She is just lucky that she doesn't have any electronic only print readers at work - yet! Any time she needs prints done for work, it has to be ink.
She dreads the day govt security might legislate electronic print readers for her station; she'd be out of a job.

DH decided not to pursue the carry permit/fingerprint issue so we're out $90 plus gas for the 20 miles to and from the fingerprint site. Oh well.

I have a ridiculous amount of trouble with the touch screens at work. I’ve been known to scream at the screen something along the lines of “I’m NOT dead, I’m very much alive, so recognize my freaking fingertips you cheap piece of plastic garbage”. Well, maybe it’s the filthy language I really use that provokes them into ignoring my fingertips. 😏
